Story:
Tess is the daughter of a Professor of Norse History from Minnesota. Growing up dragged up all over the North Atlantic coasts as her father excavated Viking ruin after ruin, always hearing about how this was not simply academic but the history of her ancestors, she developed a strong rebellious streak soon into her teens. Parties, booze and more than a few times the cops brought her home. Which did wonders for the family peace.
After a particular hot argument, she finally snapped and left home a few weeks before her eighteenth birthday. Two years, and a lot of miles later, she was down to working the bar at a nightclub, when she's not using her employee bonus to be a guest, and generally living her life only for the present.
At least until one night, as she brought out the trash at the end of her shift and came into the back alley to a fight scene. A bunch of thugs, it seemed, had tried to attack a guest and another man had jumped in to save her. Despite giving them hell, he was clearly outnumbered and knifes had already been drawn.
Without thinking much, Tess jumped to the aid of the lone defender, swinging the full trashbag as a improvised mallet.
Deciding that this was starting to be no longer worth their while, or more clearly the cops arriving, they fled the scene.
Tess had to give her statement and was then sent home.
Which is where *he* waited for her.
First politely introducing himself as 'Mr Vadderung' he managed to talk himself into her place for a coffee and then the wild ride began.
He explained that she had screwed up. That the guy she had saved had been supposed to die and for his heroism had been slated to come to Valhalla. That he had been an IT Guy for a company named Monoc Securities with some surprisingly big balls.
And he explained that he was actually Odin Allfather and by her actions she had *stolen* one of his future Einherjar from him. By accident, true, but that didn't replace what he had been denied.
Though, he pointed out, there was a simple fix for that. After all, Tess *was* a descendant of Ragnar Lodbrok's wife Aslaugh. Which made her fully qualified to become a Chooser of the Slain and enter his service instead of the man she had helped.
And the offer was not optional.

And so Tess became a (unpaid!) Valkyrie in training.
