  1. >When you come in the next morning, nothing seems out of sorts.
  2. >Starlight is snuggled very closely to Slate.
  3. >Fluffy is in her bed, and Mandy is on his back as usual.
  4. >Huh, the cage is awfully clean.
  5. >He didn't eat too much yesterday, anyway. At least you won't have to clean it out.
  6. >You set your bag on the front desk and head over to wake everyone up.
  7. >”Mommy back!”
  8. >You give Starlight a hug as you take her out and set her in the pen.
  9. “Yes, mommy's back.”
  10. >She runs in wobbly rings, chanting 'yay mommy!'.
  11. >Slate yawns as you take him out next.
  12. >”Nice hooman fin' new fwiends?”
  13. “I'm afraid not.”
  14. >You probably should have gotten up a bit earlier, you might have been able to find a couple.
  15. >The four times you woke up after dreaming about a Felix sandwich thwarted you.
  16. >You check on Mandy next.
  17. >His eyes are halfway open, as is his mouth.
  18. >This is his usual waking up look, so you leave him for a moment to retrieve Fluffy.
  19. >Once she's in the pen, you go back to get Mandy.
  20. >...something's not right. His eyes are all the way open now, but look in different directions.
  21. >His left foreleg twitches every so often.
  22. “Mandy?”
  23. >He might be as slow as a quadraplegic snail, but he still knows his name. Most of the time.
  24. >It gets no response out of him, however.
  25. >You look more closely. He's still breathing.
  26. >Very carefully, you scoop him out and carry him over to the desktop.
  27. “Fluffy, what happened to Mandy?”
  28. >She climbs out of the litter box and looks up at you.
  29. >”Make funny noisies. Bouncy.”
  30. >You spend a moment to translate that into English.
  31. >That sounds an awful lot like a seizure.
  32. >You look at Mandy again.
  33. >He's still twitching a bit. Drool trickles down his cheek fluff.
  34. >”Fwiend okay?” Starlight asks.
  35. “I'm...I'm not sure.”
  36. >You wave your index finger above his face. A healthy fluffy would track it, usually while asking 'wha doin'?'
  37. >Mandy's eyes don't even budge.
  38. >Even his blinks are incredibly slow.
  39. >It's finally happened. His brain is broken.
  40. >”Wan' pway wif fwiend! Pwease gif!” Starlight calls.
  41. >Mandy is in no state for that, of course.
  42. >You have to get him to the vet...
  43. >No, you already know what she'll say.
  44. >You may as well do this yourself.
  45. >”Mommy? Wha' doin'? Why no gif fwiend?”
  46. >You look over at the pen. Starlight is plopped on her rear, gazing at you, while Slate stands beside her.
  47. “Mandy doesn't feel well.”
  48. >”Sickies?” she tilts her head.
  49. “Um...yes! You could say that.”
  50. >”Gif huggies! Huggies make betta!”
  51. >...maybe they could. Maybe she could suffocate him for you by accident.
  52. >Damn it, how could you think that?!
  53. “I don't think huggies will help, sweetie.”
  54. >”Gif nummies?” Slate offers.
  55. >You just shake your head, too busy thinking about how to get this over with.
  56. >It has to be quick. He deserves that.
  57. >No leaving him outside to fry on the sidewalk.
  58. >No letting him starve to death either.
  59. >The least horrible option is to take him and break his neck.
  60. >Picturing this brings out the tears.
  61. >”Nuuuuuuuu! Why mommy cwy?!”
  62. “I'll be right b-back...”
  63. >It takes so much effort to choke out the words.
  64. >You gently pick Mandy up and go to the door in the back right corner.
  65. >This is a storage closet, the only place in the building that's out of sight of the play pen.
  66. >You can hear Starlight calling fearfully as you shut the door.
  67. >You never go back here with a fluffy pony. She knows something is wrong.
  68. >After you turn on the light, you set Mandy down on an empty shelf.
  69. >The cold metal makes him twitch a little more violently.
  70. >Even though you know he's mentally checked out, you can't help but think his derped eyes look a little fearful.
  71. >That's probably the fault of the part of you that's already regretting this.
  72. >You pick him up again.
  73. >You finally have to admit that you have no idea how to do this.
  74. >Unlike your unstable cousin, you tend to shy away from murdering living creatures.
  75. >You wrap your left hand around his neck.
  76. >Too hard; he poops a little. Now he's shaking.
  77. >He can't be in pain, he was barely responsive!
  78. >Suddenly, he emits a broken, high-pitched squeak.
  79. >It startles you, and you drop him. Little cracks ring out as he strikes the tile floor.
  80. “N-no, that's not what I meant to do!”
  81. >His eyes are still looking in different directions, but his body twitches furiously.
  82. >The squeaks. Oh god, the squeaks.
  83. >Frantic, you pick him up off the floor. His blood gets onto your hands.
  84. >He's wiggling, and now the blood's making him slippery.
  85. “Mandy, stop!”
  86. >Why would he stop? He's in terrible pain and it's your fault.
  87. >He slips out of your hands and drops again, landing with more faint snaps.
  88. >The chirping shifts from tinny and fearful to weak and pained.
  89. >After a few agonizing seconds, you're just desperate to stop the noise.
  90. >You kneel and punch him. Right in the head. He squeaks loudly one more time, then falls still.
  91. >Now you have to shove down your emotions, and get him into the trash can by the sinks without Starlight or Slate seeing the body.
  92. >You gather up his bloody corpse and shoulder open the door.
  93. >”Mommy back! Bwing fwiend too?”
  94. >You dare not turn and look at them. You just walk sideways along the wall until you reach the can, then drop Mandy in.
  95. >Damn it, some of his blood got on your white shirt.
  96. >”Nice hooman haf fwiend? Whewe fwiend go?”
  97. >You wash the crimson off your hands, but there's no towel over here.
  98. >Without thinking, you turn to walk back to the desk.
  99. >Starlight sees it immediately. ”D-dat boo-boo juice?”
  100. “No! It's...uh...it's cranberry juice!”
  101. >Slate stares at you for what seems like an eternity.
  102. >”Whewe fwiend go?” he asks again.
  103. >Curse that fuzzy blue ball.
  104. >When you don't immediately answer, Starlight has enough time to piece it together.
  105. >”M-mommy huwt fwiend? Why mommy huwt fwiend?”
  106. >You walk toward the pen, but before you can even try to explain, Starlight is backing away from you.
  107. >”No huwt Stawigh'! Stawigh' good fwuffy, no huwt!”
  108. >Slate positions himself between her and you.
  109. >”Why huwt fwiend, nice hooman? Why make fwiend go 'way?”
  110. “I didn't have a choice!”
  111. >”Nice hooman neva huwt fwuffy, a'ways say fwuffies good, no get owwies!”
  112. “Mandy was sick, he was in pain, I had to...I had to...”
  113. >You sit on the floor by the pen. Starlight scrambles to the farthest corner.
  114. >Slate eyes you for a minute, then follows her.
  115. >They're never going to understand this.
  116. “I'm not going to hurt you, don't run...”
  117. >”No suwe. Hooman make fwiend go 'way.”
  118. “Slate, I had to!”
  119. >He cuddles with Starlight, who's now crying and trying to 'hide'. His eyes never leave you.
  120. >Fluffy, as usual, may as well be on another planet. She doesn't even acknowledge the noise.
  121. >You don't know what else to say, so you get up and go find a tissue.
  122. >You glance up at the clock. It's not even ten thirty.
  123. >This day sure got ruined fast.
