- Language-learning has changed tremendously over the past 50 years, and with the advent of VR and natural language processing technology, it is changing exponentially faster.
- In the early 60s computer-systems, like PLATO, employed a "drill and kill" approach to teaching. Then Noam Chomsky came and people started being more interactive and using more immersed methods.
- But when we think about language-learning and technology, what teaches better? Computer or man? Let's explore this topic.
- A common application of computer-based learning is Anki and Memrise, which use repetition algorithms. However, as this study shows, many words that have no root meaning are forgotten through repetition at a very fast rate.
- Duolingo, Rosetta Stone, are alternatives which use sentence-structure algorithms. However, these programs regularly fail to bring someone past a beginner's level.
- As this graph shows, immersive styles of learning are best for learning. Online text-chat immersion already exists as discord servers host hundreds of language learning communities for online chat and Italki and Verbling offering instant video-tutoring.
- But there is still the question of how far AI can reach up with us and teach more than we know.
- An example of this is the Mitsuku bot, which can detect emotional biases in chat or the sarcasm detector which can say if something is not sarcastic with 83% accuracy. There are even AI novels, which use current weather, location, and ambience that craft stories to read. Natural language processing is advancing at a fast rate, with the complexities growing more and more.
- Clearly, a bot that can track word memory-associations, entertain any conversation, with the Internet at its disposal, is the perfect tool for bettering one's ability to learn and converse.
- As this graph shows, robot teachers have a significant effect on the motivation of learners. In an experiment showing the differences between human and robot teachers teaching how to rebuild a block structure, robots were only 43% less effective at teaching the students.
- Overall, visionaries are working on new language-teaching methods, inspired by topics I have mentioned. For the future, one can only dream about the extent by which one will learn to express themself.
