His training should tell him to let go of his weapon—that he’s a danger to himself and others—but Kylie knows he won’t do that, because he’s always been kind of a selfish prick.

- A fleck of acid strikes her cheek, and it’s like having a nail pushed into her skin. She screams in pain, but keeps her eyes up and gun blazing. She splatters x-ray after x-ray as her eyepiece goes wild, pointing out contacts everywhere.

- The trigger still works, so she keeps shooting. Her skull transmits the carbonated sound of acid foaming into her bone. It eats into Kylie’s sinus and smoke pours from her nostrils, choking out all air. The drop is like a hot wire, cooking flesh, prodding the itchiest place in her head. When she sneezes, a flap of skin comes loose— probably her f cking nose.

- Blood streams through her teeth, syrupy copper coating her tongue. She’s had worse—it doesn’t hurt half as bad as her jaw did coming off. Her face isn’t burning anymore, but her eyepiece blinks insistently with a warning.
