Miki Route 1-3: Town and Gown

    "This will be the first time that I leave Yamaku's grounds since my transfer."

    "As I step through the gates, it feels like I'm stepping out of a bubble, back into the real world. For a moment the thought of turning around flashes across my mind."

    "Miki seems to notice my hesitation and strides ahead a few paces, waiting for me to join her out on the road."

    "The look on her face is more than enough to convey her unspoken challenge."

    "Being a disabled person in a school with pretty much only disabled people is one thing, but can I be the same person outside of this place as well?"

    "No doubt the uniform alone will be enough for people to label me 'disabled'. If I wanted to, I could put on some of my old clothes and nobody would be able to tell something's wrong with me."

    "It's not like that for Miki, though. I can't think of any clothes she could wear that wouldn't give away her missing hand."

    "That's the challenge she's given me. Can I venture out into the real world like she does? With people able to tell I'm disabled, like they can with her?"

    "I take a deep breath. Like running, the real world is not something I want to shut out of my life."

    mk "Come on! It's not like you're Neil Armstrong landing on the moon here!"

    "She's right, I guess. I'm making too big a deal out of this."

    "The couple of steps it takes me to catch up to her again are so anticlimactic it almost makes me laugh."

    "I don't feel any different standing out here than I do on the other side of the gates."

    "My steps are rewarded with another of Miki's grins and together we set off on the road into town."

    "The road leads us down the mountain, and before long it turns into a quiet street where we pass various homes and uninteresting little stores."

    "I'm surprised by how few people we've run into. Those that I do see are either senior citizens or fellow Yamaku students."

    "It's so unlike the city that I grew up in… it almost feels like there's a blanket covering the town, lulling the world around me into a relaxed state."

    "It makes this place feel like a stepping stone between Yamaku and the real world. It wouldn't surprise me if that was one of the main reasons for founding the school here of all places."

    "The first place Miki shows me is the town's convenience store."

    mk "They don't have a lot of variety, but you should be able to get anything you might need."

    mk "Sure as hell beats the cafeteria food, at least."

    "I can't help but agree."

    hi "Definitely. It's almost like they make it taste bland on purpose, just so we'll try cooking our own."

    "Miki laughs and nods her head in agreement."

    mk "I thought so too when I first got here. Can you cook?"

    hi "Well enough, I think. Back home I used to have to make my own dinner a lot. Ordering in got old pretty quickly, so I learned some easy recipes."

    "Miki hums with approval and leads the way into the store."

    "As we enter, Miki reaches for a basket and casually loops her left arm through the handles. She then picks up another basket and passes it to me."

    "I take it from her, and can't help but feel a bit impressed by how unaffected she seems."

    "I consider splitting up and each getting what we need on our own, but the store is so small it would barely save time. Instead, we browse the aisles together."

    mk "What's that you're getting?"

    "Miki stares suspiciously at a readymade meal that I'm about to put into my basket."

    hi "Well, I don't {b}always{/b} feel like cooking."

    mk "That doesn't mean you should eat this kind of stuff."

    "She heads for another aisle and comes back with a can of soup instead."

    mk "Here, you just have to heat this up. Easy enough, right?"

    hi "Soup?"

    mk "If you think it's boring, then use it as motivation to cook something better."

    "With that, she tosses the can into my shopping basket."

    mk "You should get some fruit too. C'mon, they keep it over here."

    "Thanks to Miki's guidance my basket fills up pretty quickly. Together, we pick out food that strikes a nice balance between being healthy and tasting good."

    "Once the shopping basket is full, I begin heading for the register, but stop when I realize Miki isn't following me."

    mk "Go ahead and pay for your stuff, I need to pick up something I forgot to grab earlier."

    "I take my basket to the front desk, but it isn't long before Miki catches back up with me."

    "When she returns, I can see a packet of bandages in an otherwise empty basket. My attention is drawn to the matching bandages wrapped around Miki's wrist, concealing her stump."

    "The more that I think about them, the more curious I get. Surely whatever wound she had would have healed by now?"

    "Before I can put any more thought into it, the cashier begins to ring up my items. Miki takes out the packet and puts the basket away, leaving the bandages with the rest of my things."

    "As we emerge from the store, I try to adjust the shopping bags in my hands to make them easier to carry."

    mk "Here, let me grab one of those."

    hi "Don't worry about it, they're pretty light."

    mk "C'mon, don't think I forgot about that scare you gave me on the track. Just let me take one for ya'."

    "A part of me wants to insist that I'm strong enough to at least carry my own groceries, but I end up giving in."

    "She reaches across to my right side with her right arm and grabs ahold of one of the bags, serving to emphasize her stump once more."

    "Again, my mind can't help but shift to the bandages that she seemed so aloof about."

    "I open my mouth to ask about it, when I realize what I'm about to do. When I was in the hospital, the people who did come to see me would ask about my heart all the time. I hated that."

    "It was as if to them, my heart took over my entire being. Now I'm about to put Miki in that same position."

    "I can only imagine how many times she's been questioned about her missing hand, but I'm pretty sure she's not looking to increase that number."

    "I notice Miki has been staring at me for a while now and quickly close my mouth."

    hi "Nah, just got lost in my train of thought for a second…"

    "I can tell she isn't buying my answer, but I guess that doesn't surprise me. I've never been a very good liar."

    "I feel a bit relieved when she doesn't press it any further than that."

    mk "Next up is this one teahouse I know. It's not quite as casual as I'd like, but it's still a nice place to have a drink. This way!"

    "I give in and follow her lead once more."

    "It's only a short walk to the next destination."

    "Honestly, I wouldn't mind a brief rest before we walk back up to the school."

    hi "Sure, I can't say no to good coffee."

    "Miki flashes me a knowing smile and nods her head at the door, while shaking the grocery bag she's holding."

    "Right. I should've seen that one coming. I quickly open the door and let her enter first."

    mk "Such a gentleman, thank you."

    "I mutter an apology and follow her inside."

    "Almost immediately upon entering, a familiar looking waitress comes over to welcome us."

    hi "Yuuko? I thought you worked at the library?"

    "At the mention of her name, Yuuko almost hops in surprise. She looks confused for a moment, until realization sets in."

    yu "Miki and… Hisao, right?"

    hi "Yeah, that's me."

    "Yuuko seems surprised to run into Yamaku students. I guess she's more used to seeing them at her other job."

    mk "I didn't think being a librarian would pay so badly that you need a second job. Or is it the other way around?"

    yu "Uhm. Well. I'm saving up money, so I'm working as much as I can. The school pays me well enough, but I can't work enough hours to save as much as I'd like."

    "For a moment Miki and I wait in silence. I get the impression that Yuuko is easily distracted, until she suddenly remembers her function at the teahouse and springs back to life."

    yu "Oh! Right, um…"

    yu "Welcome to the Shanghai! Thank you for patronizing this establishment!"

    "She finishes her incredibly rehearsed introduction with a bow so sharp that I could swear it cut through the air itself."

    yu "W-would you two like a seat?"

    mk "Yeah, that'd be nice."

    "She quickly leads us to a small booth by one of the windows where we take our seats, opposite each other."

    mk "What're you having?"

    hi "I think I'll just try the coffee. I'm not that hungry."

    "Miki sighs dramatically and slumps on the table."

    mk "Aw… I felt like having some cake, but if you don't get any I'll just look greedy."

    "She looks up at me with a smirk. Her eyes don't even look pleading, rather they seem to be saying 'you should order cake', like some kind of mind trick."

    "I guess we could compromise."

    hi "How about we share a slice then?"

    "Miki beams and when Yuuko returns to take our order, she asks for two coffees and a slice of their chocolate cake, with an extra fork."

    "Miki laughs a bit in response, then looks out the window."

    "Before long, Yuuko returns with our cake and coffee. The cups rattle on their saucers as she nervously puts them in front of us. When she puts the cake on the table I notice she's forgotten about the extra fork."

    "She looks skittish already, though, so I don't want to upset her more. Miki just stares at me as I let Yuuko leave."

    mk "Well, I guess I get the whole thing after all!"

    hi "Whatever happened to not wanting to be greedy?"

    mk "Yeah, you're right. If you want, we can share the fork too."

    mk "But you'll have to wait your turn."

    hi "Sure, go for it. You're the one who wanted cake in the first place."

    "With my blessing, she happily digs into the cake."

    "Even though I couldn't have cared less about the cake a few minutes ago, seeing Miki savor each bite is making me want to try it more and more."

    "At least the coffee is every bit as good as she told me."

    "To my surprise, Miki seems very careful to eat exactly half of the slice, no more, no less. When she finishes the last of her portion, she slides it over to my side of the table, fork and all."

    mk "Here, I've had enough. You should try it."

    "Miki looks like she'd love to finish the whole thing, but the cake looks too good not to taste it for myself."

    "I carefully take the fork and stab at the cake, making sure to get a good amount of icing in the process."

    "Looking pleased with her exercise in restraint, Miki takes a sip of her coffee and eagerly watches on as I take my first bite."

    mk "So? Whatcha' think?"

    hi "I think I should've asked for a fork after all, it's delicious!"

    mk "Next time you should order your own slice, then. I almost feel bad for giving away something so good."

    "Miki almost looks genuinely remorseful, except for the glint in her eye giving away that she's joking."

    "As she takes another sip of her coffee, her expression gradually changes to something a little more serious than usual."

    mk "Anyway, what do you think of Yamaku so far?"

    hi "It's okay I guess. I don't really feel like I fit in yet, I mean…"

    mk "You mean you don't think you're disabled, at least not like the people around you?"

    "How did she know?"

    hi "Yes, kind of. It still feels so unreal, like I could wake up from all this at any moment and be fine again."

    "Miki's bandaged arm rests on the table and her gaze rests upon it for a while."

    mk "I understand what you mean. Honestly, I felt the same when I first got here."

    "Her arm now has my attention as well. We both stare at it in silence, as if frozen in time."

    "The sounds of Yuuko hurrying to welcome new guests into the Shanghai finally pulls us back into reality, pushing time forward again."

    mk "So, since you and I will be running together from now on, what is it you want to get out of it?"

    hi "What do you mean?"

    mk "Well, do you just want to build up stamina? Or do you want to do more, maybe even join the track and field club?"

    "I give it some thought. I haven't joined any of the clubs yet, but thinking about joining the track and field club brings competition to mind. I don't think that's a good idea at all."

    hi "For now, I just want to rebuild my stamina. I don't think playing sports or competing with anyone will be an option for me, but I want to make sure that I can at least live a normal life."

    "Miki nods and gives me an encouraging smile."

    mk "Don't worry, I understand. That doesn't mean I'm letting you off the hook from running plenty of laps, though."

    "I grimace at the thought. I never considered running for the sake of running to be particularly appealing."

    "Still, with someone like Miki helping me improve, it doesn't sound too bad."

    hi "I can't wait. Maybe by the end of the year I'll be able to run as much as you do."

    mk "Heh, just maybe. Either way, that's a good goal to have in mind."

    hi "Why do you run so much, anyway? Is it just to compete with Emi?"

    "Miki seems to consider the question for a moment, but quickly shakes her head."

    mk "Nah, she's just my rival when it comes to running. I run because I like it and I'm good at it. Emi is just someone that pushes me to try harder, even if she doesn't know that."

    hi "How does that work? You two seemed ready to go at it when she ran into us earlier."

    "She laughs and stirs her half empty cup of coffee, visibly embarassed."

    mk "The truth is that for as long as I've raced against her, she's always been faster than me. I guess sometimes I'm just a bit of a sore loser about that, so I tease her."

    mk "But if I didn't have someone like Emi, I don't think I'd work as hard to get better. Don't tell her I said that, though."

    "I understand what she means. This morning, I only pushed myself harder because I had Miki running with me. No wonder the two can't train together, it wouldn't help either of them to constantly wear each other out."

    hi "I think it's the same for Emi. I mean, she has to worry about you catching up to her, right?"

    "Miki shrugs, though she doesn't entirely manage to hide her smile."

    mk "Lately I've been training more, so maybe I'll finally be able to beat her at the track meet."

    "With a quick gulp she finishes the last of her coffee and slides out of the bench."

    mk "So, think you're rested enough to make the climb back up to Yamaku?"

    "I simply nod, feeling a little embarrassed that she saw through me and could tell I wanted a break. It still doesn't feel right to admit to that kind of weakness."

    "Miki signals to Yuuko that she'd like to settle the bill, though I insist on paying for her share, since she took the time to show me around."

    "Together we leave the Shanghai, each of us carrying one of my bags."

    #Road by Yamaku, dusk

    "The climb uphill is even more tiring than I'd feared."

    "It doesn't take long at all for my breathing to get heavy. There's no way Miki couldn't have noticed."

    "Suddenly, Miki stops and looks out at the view our elevated position grants us."

    mk "Hisao, come take a look. This is the one thing I love most about walking back up to Yamaku."

    "I move up to join her side and look at the rooftops of the town beneath us. The light of the setting sun adds something special to the sight."

    "For a while, Miki and I just stand there in silence, watching as people below go about their business. A couple of students pass us, some heading the same way, others going into town even now to run errands."

    "Just when I notice my breathing has returned to normal, Miki turns and starts walking again."

    mk "C'mon slowpoke, at this rate we'll never get back before sunset."

    "It's obvious that she only stopped us for my benefit. I feel like I should be the one so casually taking my limits into account, but there's no point in dwelling on that."

    "I stretch my back and set off to catch up to her again, as we continue on."

    "The last leg of the walk back goes a little easier. Still, I'll be glad when I'm back in my room."

    "As we near the dorms, I see a familiar shape sitting down on the ground, staring at her mural."

    "I can tell Rin's made some progress on the mural since I last saw it, but it still doesn't look anywhere close to being finished yet."

    "The closer we get to her, the more I wonder if she's even looking at the mural or just spacing out."

    "Regardless, I feel like talking to her now might just distract her. Miki doesn't seem to think so, though."

    mk "Lookin' good! This is for the festival, right? Think it'll be done in time?"

    "Rin blinks, and for a moment she stares at the mural as if looking at it for the first time. She slowly cranes her neck to look up at Miki."

    rin "Please don't talk about my mural before it's finished. It's bad luck."

    hi "Bad luck? I didn't think you were the type to believe in that kind of stuff."

    "She seems to consider this for a moment."

    rin "I didn't think I had to be a type to believe in anything."

    mk "You shouldn't believe in bad luck, there's no such thing. Things just happen."

    "Rin gets up off her stool and stares at Miki, carefully inspecting her."

    mk "What?"

    rin "Just now you sounded like Emi. I was just making sure you weren't her after all."

    mk "How could you mistake me for her? We're nothing alike! The only way we could be more opposite is if one of us was a guy!"

    rin "Red and blue are nothing alike, but they're both still colors."

    "Rin nods to herself, satisfied with the explanation, and her attention is drawn back to the mural again."

    "Miki, on the other hand, only looks more confused."

    mk "Wait, what do you mean by that? You're not making any sense."

    "The girl doesn't respond to Miki, instead devoting her attention to a section of the mural."

    "This only seems to annoy Miki further, so I try interpreting Rin's explanation."

    hi "I think she's saying you two still have a lot in common, like running."

    mk "I guess, but that's like saying you and I are alike because we're both humans."

    rin "Would you rather not be alike?"

    mk "I didn't say that. But anyone can tell we're different. There would be no point in competing with Emi if we were the same."

    rin "I thought the point was to enjoy running together."

    "Miki scoffs and shakes her head."

    mk "The point is to find out who's faster."

    "This draws a curious look from Rin, who somehow seems unfamiliar with the concept of competition."

    rin "Why?"

    mk "Because it's fun to find out who's the fastest runner on the track."

    mk "Isn't it the same in your art class?"

    rin "There's no track in the classroom."

    "Miki looks stunned by Rin's response. She gives me a pleading look."

    "I can't really tell if her deadpan reply is a joke or if she's being serious. Changing the subject might be better."

    hi "Have you eaten yet? You look like you've been here a while."

    "Rin goes silent for a moment, then nods her head."

    rin "I had lunch with you and Emi."

    hi "You haven't had anything since then?"

    "Rin shakes her head."

    mk "You need to eat something, you're skinny enough as it is."

    "The girl's eyes snap back to the mural, as if we no longer existed."

    "Miki looks every bit as frustrated with Rin as I feel right now."

    mk "You've gotta go get something to eat. I've got to help Hisao bring his groceries in, but if I still see you here when I get back, I'll drag you to town myself and make you eat 'til you look like a pig, got it?"

    "Rin doesn't seem to respond to Miki at all."

    "Instead, she is staring at a fixed point of her unfinished mural, only to tentatively pick up her brush and add a gentle stroke with more precision than I would be able to manage with my hands."

    "Just as Miki opens her mouth to speak up, Rin's gaze finally breaks away from the mural."

    rin "Alright, I'll go find something to eat."

    "With that, she turns around and heads towards Yamaku's main gate."

    "Miki turns to me, her shoulders finally relaxing as Rin disappears from our view."

    mk "I wonder how Emi puts up with that girl every day. Sometimes it's like she's the only one in on a joke that the rest of us don't get."

    "She gives me a small sigh before reassuming her usual grin, almost as if nothing had happened."

    mk "Anyway, do you want me to carry your stuff in for you? You look wiped."

    hi "Nah, I think I'll be fine taking it back up myself. It's not much of a walk."

    "I flash her a smile, and she nods."

    mk "Alright. We're definitely gonna do something about that stamina of yours, though. Come to the track again on Monday, same time as this morning."

    hi "I will. I'll see you in class tomorrow, thanks again for showing me around."

    mk "My pleasure, people like us have to stick together, after all."

    "She hands me the bag she was carrying, then takes out the roll of bandages that she'd bought."

    "I watch her leave for the girls' dorms before turning around and heading for my own building."

    "I wasn't expecting more than to learn a few new places around town, but spending the day with Miki definitely turned out to be more fun than I thought it'd be."

    "Once I've finished putting all of my groceries away, I try to collect myself for the night."

    "There's some homework for tomorrow, but fortunately it's not very difficult. When I finish the last of it, I drop my pen on the desk and lean back."

    "Feeling more exhausted than I think I have any right to be, I take off my clothes for a shower."

    "She almost sounds bored giving me this introduction, but I try not to overthink it."

    "The sooner I can eat something other than the bland meals prepared at Yamaku, the better."

    hi "Yeah, just a few things. Do you need anything?"

    mk "One or two things. Let's go inside, before it closes."

    "I start down the aisles and begin picking out food. A lot of them are readymade, or require very little in the way of preparation."

    "As I'm picking up a loaf of bread, I can see Miki from the corner of my eye, taking a packet of bandages off a shelf."

    "It makes me think of the arm she keeps bandaged up. It's strange, her injury doesn't seem like it happened recently. At least, not as recently as my heart attack."

    "I decide to ask her about it. Hopefully talking will put an end to this tension I'm feeling."

    hi "Mind if I ask you something?"

    "Miki glances at me, and shrugs."

    mk "Sure, why not? Ask away."

    hi "I just noticed you picking out those bandages."

    "Almost reflexively, Miki's hand drops, obscuring the packet with her hand."

    hi "You've been here longer than me, so I was pretty sure your arm would have healed by now. Why are you buying bandages?"

    "Miki's eyes dart from her left arm, to me, to the packet in her right hand. Her face is expressionless."

    mk "Bandages get dirty, so I have to replace them sometimes. It happens."

    "She turns and heads for the cashier. I guess that's all the explanation she's going to give me."

    "After paying, Miki walks back up to me."
