Full spoilers for Wolftime ahead


It begins following an unnumbered son by the name of Gaius who is a Son of Russ from the genestock of Russ, he and the other Primaris are fighting Nightlords on a planet named Gelsepllan. The nightlords have conquered a few planets, mainly due to those planets surrendering out of fear. The Primaris win and then they’re told that they’re being sent to Fenris. The Primaris marine had previously saved a historator and as a result was given a book on fenrisian custom from the pre heresy era, he studies this and begins to try to act more wolfy despite having never been to Fenris before.

Then we join the space Wolves who are attack a bunch of orks on a space hulk, the Orks have become a ton more active since the great rift. The space wolves and their area of the galaxy are cut off from the imperium and they have no idea whats happening other than the big rift appearing, they have had no word from terra so they're working with nearby chapters to protect their region from the orks. Back to the space hulk.... the space wolves get deeper inside and it turns out in the centre is an Ork fortress and the orks are literally using this giant space hulk as a HQ, the space hulk resides next to the great rift but for some reason keeps resisting the pull of the warp whenever the rift starts to suck it in.

The space wolves get beaten by the Orks due to their Ork Psyker warlord having his powers amplified by both the great rift AND a blackstone wizard type staff he posses. The space wolves pull back and begin a long siege on the Fortress with Logan Grimnar swearing an oath to kill them all, but then have to abandon it due to a summon back to Fenris due to a prophecy/vision by Njal Stormcaller that a son of the Allfather has returned and is on his way to them, they think it could be Russ.

Njal Stormcaller had also made a prophecy that a great wolf Logan Grimnar is going to die by a big green beast, they think it means Logan Grimnar is going to be killed by Ghaz. Logan Grimnar is determined to face his fate believing it's on the Space Hulk (and try to change his fate) but it's hanging over him and making him make bad decisions, Arjac Rockfist his champion is guarding him and determined not to let Logan Grimnar die. Njal and Arjac keep advising Logan against reckless decisions but Ulrik the Slayer is advising Logan Grimnar to fight with the mindset of "If our chapter dies in the process then at least we die with honour", although it is mentioned that Ulrik the Slayer is now an old cunt and senses his time to die is coming soon due to being an old codger, Njal and Arjac suspect Ulrik just wants to die in battle and is advising Logan Grimnar poorly.

A part of the indomitus crusade branches off to go deliver Primaris sons of Russ to Fenris. During the journey there they bump into Krom Dragongazes great company who are busy fighting orks on a planet with an allied chapter "the dragonspears", Kroms company is going to lose the battle, the Primaris come to help, the primaris character Gaius seen earlier of Russ genestock is present. They introduce themselves as Sons of Russ and Krom is pretty happy, he sees thr primaris as a chance to grow his own company larger than the other companies and gain political power in the chapter. Krom takes 280 primaris along with a custodian Vychellen, a historator and a Primaris Lieutenant with him back to Fenris to deliver the news of Girlyman and the Primaris to Grimnar, when they arrive the Primaris and the ship have to wait in orbit. The primaris character Gaius and his squad are smuggled down with a Grey Hunter squad who take it upon themselves to teach the Primaris their ways. It soon becomes apparent that despite the enthusiasm of the Primaris Gaius he isn’t a real son of Fenris and is too "Imperial" for them, the Space Wolves regularly bully them and poke fun at them.

Grimnar isn't happy and doesn't trust Girlyman, the Indomitus force arrive at Fenris headed by the custodian and a primaris son of Corax Lieutenant Castallor, and they’re told to wait until Grimnar summons them, they’re treated with great hostility and mistrust. The primaris Lieutenant named Castallor is allowed to meet Logan Grimnar on a landing pad on the side of the fang (They make a point of not trusting him enough to allow him access), he has a meeting and offers the Primaris with the request that the space wolves coordinate their efforts with the Indomitus crusade to help keep the area clear of orks. Logan Grimnar is pretty unreasonable here and despite the advice of Njal, Arjac and Ulrik he declines the Primaris with the reasoning being that Girlyman the legion breaker is trying to take over.

Elsewhere a fenrisian woman keeps having visions of a wolf dying to a great green troll, she leaves her village accompanied by her son, husband, daughter and a handful of other fenrisians. They embark on a "suicidal quest" to reach the fang believing its a message for them, and that maybe the "sky warriors" are too busy dealing with everything going to shit to have received the message.

The custodian is invited down by Njal stormcaller, the custodian is trying to find out info about the Bucharis weapon from the previous book "the gate of bones" as believes the space wolves can help as they were involved in quelling the original bucharis rebellion many years ago.

A space wolves defense gun battery then becomes live on Fenris targeting the Indomitus fleet ship docked above fenris filled with the Primaris, the Primaris Lieutenant on the ship believes the Space Wolves are going to kill them while Logan Grimnar argues that it the space wolves doing it. There is a lot of mistrust between the two sides.

Meanwhile the Primaris Gaius and the firstborn marines (they’re now referred to as "firstborn" in the book multiple times by the way) have a little argument when Gaius is told hes a good warrior and a good space marine, and he might be a space wolf but he will never be a true Fenrisian no matter how hard he tries. This pisses Gaius off and he jumps out of the thunderhawk gunship they’re currently in wearing only his robes, in an attempt to prove not only himself worthy but all other Primaris also.

Word reaches Rowyourboat Gorillaman that his gift of Primaris was rejected, therefore he decides to go to fenris himself to try and convince them to take his aid and that he isn’t doing anything sneaky. When Grimnar is informed that Girlyman is coming he gets nervous and recalls ALL space wolves.

All the space wolf companies return to Fenris following summons from Grimnar. They have an emergency meeting consisting of all wolf Lords, Njal, Arjac, Ulrik and Bjorn the felhanded. Bjorn warns that Gulliman is not to be trusted as he previously forced all legions to break, almost causing a warn until Dorn eventually agreed.

Girlyman arrives at Fenris accompanied by Malvodor Colquan, some techpriests, a firstborn ultramarine, a Primaris ravenguard marine who works closely under girlyman to learn from him. Girlyman meets with Logan, Logan enters with a ton of Brovado and girlyman shocks everybody by kneeling to Logan Grimnar.

Logan Grimnar still denies the Primaris under the context that all Gulliman wants to do is get the space wolves indebted to him, and then use this debt to control them. Gulliman says they are a gift to reinforce a first founding chapter as they're important, but Grimnar denies the reinforcements. Gulliman prepares to leave.

Back to Gaius, the primaris space wolf who earlier leapt out of the thunderwolf to prove he can survive the wilds. Gaius goes on an epic journey accross Fenris where he bumps into the earlier mentioned Fenrisian Gothi woman who is journeying to the fang to share an important vision/warning with the space wolves. Gaius kills a blackmane thunderwolf barehanded although he nearly dies, he braves the worst time of the fenrisian winter (the helwinter) and then he kills a sea serpent, while in the sea.. using only an axe like a badass.

Eventually Gaius gets the fenrisian gothi to the fang where she warns Njal Stormcaller and Logan Grimnar/his council of her vision (it doesn't specify what this is.. only that it's super troubling for Njal and Njal leaves to journey into the spirit of Fenris for answers the same as Russ did in Wolfking, Njal even mentions Russ doing it.). Before Njal leaves he is checking her mind psychically for more clues while still in the meeting with Logan Grimnar and council, he sees the deeds of the Primaris Gaius slaying the Thunderwolf/Sea serpent. He shares these deeds with Logan Grimnar who is impressed, this causes Grimnar to 360 on his decision and he agrees to the primaris reinforcements and primaris creation tech, but also warns he will not make any oath to Gulliman. Gulliman leaves happy as it all went to plan and the crusade can continue safe in the knowledge the space wolves are strong enough to hold the sector behind them, Gulliman mentions is the war of the beast resulted in Orks invading terra, and is scared that if the Orks get to Terra it could happen again and the High Lords will use it as a way to turn everybody against Girlyman.


One more thing, theres a minor side plot where a navy guy is captured and taken as an ork slave. When he is eventually rescued by a custodian and some stormtroopers, he blurts a mad story about a human traitor commissar working for the orks, Ghaz uniting all the clans for a great waaaaagh and Gork and Mork being active talking/helping the orks. The custodian and the historator interviewing the rescued slave believe it is all madness but its all actually true as seen in the slaves POV sections.

Theres also a short scene early in the book where Malvodor Colquan who is accompanying Gulliman, is actually practicing fighting/killing Gulliman in a simulation room, fighting physical holograms of girlyman over and over. The Tribune Malvodor Colquan seen in dawn of fire 1 and 2 actively mistrusts and dislikes Gulliman.

The book ends with The primaris Gaius being renamed to Kiarg Iron Oath and being accepted as a full on Space Wolf and fenrisian, Grimnar then takes his entire chapter which is largely reinforced by thousands of new Primaris space wolves. The conquer the space hulk and kill the ork psyker warlord easily. The space hulk then becomes a testing ground for Primaris where they have to navigate it without dying to the remaining orks and xenos on board, if they reach their goal (a space wolf safe zone) then they are full fledged space wolves  Gaius (now called Kiarg iron oath) is the test master for the Primaris.
