i think that after an omega has a litter they’re required a month rest period before they can conceive another — for safety and health reasons! so if shinji conceives his first litter during shirou’s rest period, cu might observe him and extend it because of how anxious and protective he gets over shinji. they’re probably the most Bonded pair in the facility, so cu is doing his best to learn ways to bend “rules” to do what’s best for the omegas and their health.

shinji wasn’t given clearance to conceive until after shirou had his puppies because he hadn’t quite made it to a suitable weight yet. (watching shirou and helping care for him and the puppies while they were around gave him Feelings, though.) he’s been on a regimen of fertility drugs the whole time, which are a set amount for every omega regardless of size/status. this backfires once he’s set to conceive because his first litter is abnormally large. while omega his size typically have 3-4 puppies, shinji has 6.

cu had suspicions when shinji looked bigger than normal for an omega his size so early on, so he brought him into the exam room to get a better look. i can totally see cu just. looking so worried and guilty when he realizes how he likely got into this situation and he just. pets shinji gently and says “I’m so sorry, sweetie.” and that they’re going to make sure he’s healthy and comfortable. when he brings shinji back he pets them both, telling shirou that he’ll need to help him Take Good Care of shinji.

explaining the situation to archer, cu almost looks like he’s overwhelmed with emotion. he kind of funnels it into this very alpha way of being upset and frustrated and making it sound gruff and angry, which archer can understand right away. it’s obvious how much cu cares, so the fact that he feels like he’s failed them with an oversight like this tells archer what a good person he is. i can see archer offering a slightly awkward shoulder pat and trying to be encouraging. he furiously adds this incident into his notes, in hopes of changing fertility treatment implementations in the future. in the meantime he comes around to check on shirou and shinji frequently. after hours on days when cu has to get to another job, archer lets himself into their pen and pulls shinji into his lap. shirou growls a little with his ears down, but eventually lightens up when shinji starts purring. archer explains that whether shirou likes it or not, he’s here to help.

shinji sleeps a lot. he feels so big and heavy and staff comes around to feed him frequently so he doesn’t get too weak from the diversion of nutrients, so he often has an upset tummy from it. his hips get pushed wide so quickly that cu comes around every day to give him some physical therapy, where he sets shinji in his lap and gently massages his hip joints to help take some of the pressure off and prevent injury. it makes shinji purr and arch his back, so knowing he’s helping really helps heal his guilty conscience a little.

there are days when shinji breathes hard, feeling overwhelmed by the sensation of Too Many squirmy puppies and everything pushing against his organs it makes him want to cry — those days everyone dotes on him extra. they know he needs to hear that he’s doing a great job and that he’s so pretty and they’re all more than happy to offer him that. even archer gathers him up and scent marks him, much to shirou’s distaste, but it helps shinji calm down a little.

shirou cuddles him protectively almost 24/7!! cu checks in on shirou often too, because he knows how stressed and anxious he is. he’s given extra attention and incentive treats and is thanked so much for helping him care for shinji. of course, there’s no question that he would but hearing nice things from cu feels good. cu feels a slight reprieve from his own guilt when he sees them sleeping together, shirou curled around shinji’s tummy with his face pressed into in his hair.

aside from lots of discomfort and slight complications regarding nutrition shinji gets through everything in a relatively healthy fashion! puppies probably need to be removed via surgery, so he’ll also have an extended rest period. he gets to spend a couple of days with them, which is great!! but also sad because he’s separated from shirou. he really wanted shirou to get to meet them. ;w;

probably comes back from the surgical ward just as shirou starts receiving treatment again. cu wondering if it’s better  that they’re conceiving at different times, but he knows eventually their scheduling will get unpredictable. shinji curls up next to shirou for a few days for aggressive scent marking and snuggling. ;w;
