  1. Marcus cursed as he burst into his office, slamming the door shut behind him. Too close, that had been too damned close. He should have put Velvet out of it as well, but how could he have been expected to know someone like her wouldn't share his vision?
  2.
  3. "Enough," he growled, clutching his head between his hands and staggering over to his desk. "I know, I know… we'll continue the research." Drawers slammed open as he dragged documents and folders out into a pile. Misenwood was lost, but he could find somewhere else to set up a new life. Things were becoming too hot in this small town anyway.
  4.
  5. Aura though… that was it, that was what he needed – it would change everything. He laughed despite the panic rushing through him. The greatest advancements in science were made under the most difficult of situations. That was what he'd done here… though the people might not agree he was going to solve everything.
  6.
  7. "I'll fix this," he whispered to the pile on his desk. "I-I'll make it better…"
  8.
  9. Something rustled behind him.
  10.
  11. Marcus cursed and spun with a lurch, dragging the handgun on the edge of his desk around to point behind him. The door was still locked, but against all logic there were two people stood before it. His hand shook, metal rattling as he kept the weapon firmly locked between the two.
  12.
  13. "Put the gun down," the tall blond said, slowly raising his hands before his own shoulders. How had they gotten into this room? He'd locked the door – he'd locked the reinforced door at the top of the stairs!
  14.
  15. "Stay back!" He spat, switching the gun from pointing at the Hunter's forehead to the strange girl. Her mismatched eyes, some kind of mutation, blinked uncaringly.
