  138.
  139. Before DragonCon 2013, she said she would rage if she did not see Chris Avellone and Steve again soon
  140. [https://twitter.com/SJBsMama/status/358011588315324416]
  141.
  142. and was sad her drinking team would be missing David Gaider.
  143. [https://twitter.com/SJBsMama/status/360502826549510144]
  144.
  145. She said her first night at DragonCon 2012 made for a great story
  146. [https://twitter.com/SJBsMama/status/367820701404651522]
  147.
  148. and added that she didn't remember much from it firsthand, but that she was told about it the next night.
  149. [https://twitter.com/SJBsMama/status/367821232055386113]
  150.
  151. She then got excited that David Gaider was able to make it the new DragonCon after all, encouraging his desire to get very drunk.
  152. [https://twitter.com/SJBsMama/status/369946649528774656]
  153.
  154. They seem to have had a great time.
  155. [https://twitter.com/SJBsMama/status/373443235857043456]
  156.
  157. She wished Chris a happy freaking birthday in September.
  158. [https://twitter.com/SJBsMama/status/383601971661262848]
  159.
  160. In March 2014, she noted that him not being at PAX East was the worst news of the day.
  161. [https://twitter.com/SJBsMama/status/444306514803564544]
  162.
  163. In April, she said she was always surprised by stories of abuse and harassment from other women because she simply did not have one of her own.
  164. [https://twitter.com/SJBsMama/status/459458441069604865]
  165.
  166. She went on to clarify she meant any kind of harassment or abuse,
  167. [https://twitter.com/SJBsMama/status/459458778757201920]
  168.
  169. noted that she never accepted any harassment on the rare occasions when some did come her way,
  170. [https://twitter.com/SJBsMama/status/459466069292249088]
  171.
  172. and then pointed out that she usually got it from women instead of men.
  173. [https://twitter.com/SJBsMama/status/459466114745901057]
  174.
  175. In a related story, meeting Mass Effect actors at DragonCon 2012 had given her the idea of providing them with cosplay costumes,
  176. [https://twitter.com/SJBsMama/status/243370142476685312]
  177.
  178. and she found volunteers to make the costumes in the N7 Elite cosplay group.
  179. [https://twitter.com/SJBsMama/status/243371131040579585]
  180.
  181. She started a project called the Mass Effect Cast Cosplay initiative in September 2012
  182. [https://twitter.com/SJBsMama/status/244921265096376322]
  183.
  184. and started taking donations for it
  185. [https://twitter.com/SJBsMama/status/245315290206978048]
  186.
  187. providing a list of participating actors on its website.
  188. [https://web.archive.org/web/20120926042944/http://masseffectcastcosplay.com/participating-talent/]
  189.
  190. In October, she went to Tennessee to help a volunteer named Leah with the one of the costumes,
  191. [https://twitter.com/SJBsMama/status/257036442948235264]
  192.
  193. with Leah livestreaming part of their meeting.
  194. [https://twitter.com/SJBsMama/status/257149851853275136]
  195.
  196. Karissa was excited that they got a lot done.
  197. [https://twitter.com/SJBsMama/status/260405836709507073]
  198.
  199. However, twelve days later, she said she had never been more frustrated with people working with her.
  200. [https://twitter.com/SJBsMama/status/264571678208692224]
  201.
  202. One of her donors started warning other donors about the project later that month
  203. [https://rebel666.tumblr.com/post/36490085589/regarding-the-donor-list-for-the-mass-effect-cast]
  204.
  205. and Karissa complained that other people were trying to take control of the project.
  206. [https://twitter.com/SJBsMama/status/272597855926104064]
  207.
  208. Karissa's new friend Jackie, who had started talking to her a lot because of the project, assured her there were plenty of other people who could make costumes.
  209. [https://twitter.com/SJBsMama/status/272599765676597248]
  210.
  211. As we later found out from a blog post made by Leah in January 2014, Karissa cut Leah out of the project at the beginning of November 2012, shortly after receiving her costume,
  212. [https://geekoutlet.tumblr.com/post/73288246975/a-word-of-caution-about-the-mass-effect-cast, first part]
  213.
  214. because Leah had started asking too many questions about what the donations were going towards
  215. [https://i.imgur.com/HI5xCui.jpg]
  216.
  217. and why they had been moved to Karissa's personal bank account.
  218. [https://imgur.com/a/d90Bv]
  219.
  220. Karissa also threatened another volunteer with legal action when he sent a prop directly to the actor it was meant for instead of going through her.
  221. [https://geekoutlet.tumblr.com/post/73288246975/a-word-of-caution-about-the-mass-effect-cast, middle part]
  222.
  223. As you can see in this screenshot collage given to me by Leah when I contacted her for more information, this led to a stand-off between Karissa and the N7 Elite cosplay group, with Karissa telling them she wasn't affiliated with them and did not need to answer to them, which got her banned from the group.
  224. [Leah's original post screenshot 006.jpg]
  225.
  226. Karissa ended up confiscating Leah's costume, but claimed to the actor meant to wear it that Leah was simply pulling out for personal reasons.
  227. [https://geekoutlet.tumblr.com/post/73288246975/a-word-of-caution-about-the-mass-effect-cast, bottom part]
  228.
  229. By the time Leah made her blog post, there had been accounts
  230. [https://poopsthecat-blog.tumblr.com/post/73327805466/a-word-of-caution-about-the-mass-effect-cast]
  231.
  232. of other sketchy behavior regarding the Mass Effect Cast Cosplay project
  233. [https://angeleena.tumblr.com/post/73289848429/a-word-of-caution-about-the-mass-effect-cast]
  234.
  235. and it was known that only a few of the actors had decided to stick with it,
  236. [https://tifaia.tumblr.com/post/80354766538/a-word-of-caution-about-the-mass-effect-cast]
  237.
  238. but – as commenters pointed out on Reddit – Karissa kept collecting donations on behalf of the actors who had pulled out
  239. [https://www.reddit.com/r/masseffect/comments/1v6exk/a_word_of_caution_on_the_mass_effect_cast_cosplay/, PKBitchGirl's post]
  240.
  241. and simply claimed on the project's website that not all the actors listed would have the necessary availability to make the big event.
  242. [https://www.reddit.com/r/masseffect/comments/1v6exk/a_word_of_caution_on_the_mass_effect_cast_cosplay/, undercover-n7's post]
  243.
  244. By the end of March, with less than two weeks to go before PAX East 2014, their Facebook page and their website still had no mention of any actors pulling out.
  245. [https://www.reddit.com/r/masseffect/comments/21s9vs/mass_effect_cast_cosplay_screw_up_yet_again/]
  246.
  247. Karissa finally updated the list of participants on the website at the last moment, but claimed on the page that the other actors had pulled out due to work or family commitments.
  248. [https://web.archive.org/web/20140529144803/http://masseffectcastcosplay.com/participating-talent/]
  249.
  250. When doing an Ask Me Anything on Reddit a week later,
  251. [https://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/23gzpp/we_are_the_mass_effect_cast_cosplay_team_ask_us/, original post]
  252.
  253. Karissa was asked for a breakdown of all the donations and said it would be posted on the project's website in the next few weeks. She never posted it.
  254. [https://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/23gzpp/we_are_the_mass_effect_cast_cosplay_team_ask_us/, top comments]
  255.
  256. She had posted one at the end of 2012 for the 5000 dollars she'd made in 4 months up to that point, but there was never anything similar posted for the 14 months afterwards.
  257. [https://web.archive.org/web/20130429181130/http://masseffectcastcosplay.com/2012-year-end-statement/]
  258.
  259. She did update the FAQ to say crowdfunding wouldn't be used in any subsequent events so as to ensure that all the money actually went to charity.
  260. [https://masseffectcastcosplay.wordpress.com/faq/]
  261.
  262. There were no subsequent events.
  263. [https://twitter.com/OliverHorschel/status/550129398322823168]
  264.
  265. Karissa's friend Jackie had been the Talent Coordinator for the project for most of its existence.
  266. [https://twitter.com/GeekyFriedRice/status/296011568641110016 / https://geekyfriedriceguild.com/2014/04/16/after-a-year-of-preparation-the-mecc-panel-finally-happened/]
  267.
  268. She had been introduced to Chris Avellone at DragonCon 2013
  269. [https://twitter.com/GeekyFriedRice/status/373465578574729216]
  270.

  278. [https://twitter.com/GeekyFriedRice/status/450851915832639488]
  279.
  280. Karissa was still on good terms with Chris Avellone shortly before DragonCon 2014
  281. [https://twitter.com/SJBsMama/status/479308492935663616]
  282.
  283. and so was Jackie right before it.
  284. [https://twitter.com/GeekyFriedRice/status/501872103193190400]
  285.
  286. At that DragonCon, Chris was drunk and went to the wrong panel about crowdfunding for video games. This seems to have been a major reason for him not being invited again the next year.

  292. As he clarified the following year when it was brought up again, he couldn't believe there were two similar panels at the exact same time.
  293. [https://twitter.com/nicolespag/status/594278217864720385]
  294.
  295. Karissa stopped mentioning Chris on Twitter after August 2014.

  327.
  328. On the 18th of June 2020, Karissa was upset by seeing an interview with Chris Avellone pop up in her Twitter feed and made an initial brief accusation that received little attention.
  329. [https://twitter.com/SJBsMama/status/1273482071957266433]
  330.
  331. She went into more details the following evening,

  360.
  361. She then said the events she witnessed herself happened between 2013 and 2015, even though they had actually happened between 2012 and 2014. Perhaps she wanted people to have a harder time doing research into them.

  364. Shortly afterwards, however, she made a Facebook post linking to the tweets with her accusations. Her Facebook profile is no longer publicly visible, but I archived the post while it was.
  365. [http://archive.is/BcKOQ]
  366.
  367. In the comments, Karissa tagged Melanie, her roommate from DragonCon 2012, asking her to remember about the night when she fell asleep on the floor. Melanie was unaware Karissa had been in any trouble that night and was just now hearing about it for the first time.
  368. [http://archive.is/0OoiA]
  369.
  370. According to Karissa, Melanie was asleep in the room the whole time.
  371. [http://archive.is/0OoiA]
  372.
  373. Lower down in the comments, Karissa said she hated Chris more for what he'd done to others than for what he'd done to her.

  375.
  376. In another comment, Jackie thanked Karissa.

  387.
  388. Karissa's friend Kelly AKA GlitterBroker then made her own accusation against Chris Avellone, saying he had groped her repeatedly at the Pulse bar at DragonCon 2014. According to her, Chris was trying to get her to his room for sex whenever Karissa and Jackie weren't looking. It's unclear how this could have happened without it being immediately found out by everyone.
  389. [http://archive.vn/yiQD9]
  390.
  391. But she said her friend Scott had apparently given Chris the dirtiest look, getting him to stop. She said shaking Chris' hand when they were first introduced was all it took to make him behave that way. I initially read this as meaning that this happened when they first met.
  392. [http://archive.vn/BqPGe]
  393.
  394. But let's go back in time and look at her tweets from DragonCon 2014 to see what actually happened.
  395. [https://animecons.com/events/info/4226/dragon-con-2014]
  396.
  397. She's hidden her tweets but we still have archived versions of them.
  398. [http://archive.is/AuImJ]
  399.
  400. When she first met Chris at the Pulse bar, she took this photo of him and Scott, with Scott holding and kissing his head. This was her only ever mention of Chris on Twitter until recently.
  401. [http://archive.is/BwdMz]
  402.
  403. 2 hours later, she said that what happens at DragonCon stays at DragonCon, which is a strange thing to say if she had just been groped by someone.
  404. [http://archive.is/Wsm73]
  405.
  406. She stayed in her room the next evening,

  414.
  415. When she went to the bathroom, she started hearing smack talk about who had brought her there

  417.
  418. and she walked out without saying goodbye.

  421. She said there was no one of consequence there

  423.
  424. and was still upset about it the morning after.
  425. [http://archive.vn/2foAX]
  426.
  427. That evening, which was the last evening of DragonCon 2014, she said she was going to need a lot of psych meds before she agreed to come to that con again, but added that she felt terrible she was such horrid company.
  428. [http://archive.vn/FwF2g]
  429.
  430. When her friends started talking about their friends being assaulted and groped, Kelly said that stuff hadn't happened to her because she was fat and that was kryptonite to the frat boy element there.
  431. [http://archive.is/Ayy6X]
  432.
  433. Twenty minutes later, she said she was now drunk and was going to start hitting on everyone.
  434. [http://archive.is/Ss7WR]
  435.
  436. She claimed she was only tolerable in real life when she was extremely drunk
  437. [http://archive.is/7WNQx]
  438.
  439. and then went to the Pulse bar for the last time.
  440. [http://archive.is/VjNPP]
  441.
  442. The next day at noon, she was waiting for her ride out of DragonCon with Jackie.
  443. [http://archive.is/oFu2A]
  444.
  445. This means that, according to her own words, her time at DragonCon 2014 can be divided into 2 periods:
  446. [http://archive.vn/hhRCE]
  447.
  448. the period when no one had groped her, which lasted for the entire con until the last evening,
  449. [http://archive.is/Ayy6X]
  450.
  451. and the last evening where she claimed to be hitting on everyone.
  452. [http://archive.is/Ss7WR]
  453.
  454. However, when she accused Chris of groping her, she claimed Jackie was still Chris' girlfriend at the time
  455. [http://archive.vn/yiQD9]
  456.
  457. even though, according to Karissa, Chris and Jackie broke up on one of the nights of DragonCon 2014.
  458. [https://twitter.com/SJBsMama/status/1274175404648140800]
  459.
  460. It's rather strange that Karissa never knew about any of this despite being good friends with Kelly for many years, and it's the kind of story that would really benefit from Kelly being willing to answer questions about it,
  461. [http://archive.is/4b87F]
  462.
  463. but she's been blocking everyone asking them on Twitter.

  468.
  469. This was Chris' first comment on the accusations, almost 4 hours after Karissa had made them and an hour after Kelly had added her story. Chris seemed to believe that Karissa was mostly upset about what had happened between him and Jackie.

  491. [https://twitter.com/ChrisAvellone/status/1274248599174393856]
  492.
  493. He then told Stella that she was showing too much care towards him and that it gave him hope for human nature, but asked that she cancel him at once regardless.
  494. [https://twitter.com/ChrisAvellone/status/1274248870768205824]
  495.
  496. When another fan offered support, Chris melodramatically asked to be allowed to die in his sleep, but reiterated that he did care very much about Karissa's friend and did not want to diminish it even if it did not end up in a good place.
  497. [https://twitter.com/ChrisAvellone/status/1274252171702177792]
  498.
  499. He added that he still felt bad about the breakup.
  500. [https://twitter.com/ChrisAvellone/status/1274252603111563264]
  501.
  502. He told Stella that Karissa hates him and is right to feel that way, and that he can't fix it as much as he'd like to.
  503. [https://twitter.com/ChrisAvellone/status/1274252996117848071]
  504.
  505. A minute after that, Karissa replied, asking Chris to spare her the lies and non-apologies and confess to what he'd supposedly done to countless women.
  506. [https://twitter.com/SJBsMama/status/1274253275827757056]

  512. [https://twitter.com/SJBsMama/status/1274257092589821952]
  513.
  514. Chris then told a fan that his work on games was not an excuse for hurting someone he should have communicated with better.
  515. [https://twitter.com/ChrisAvellone/status/1274258723129573376]
  516.
  517. Karissa added that she did hate him, claiming he'd assaulted and abused her friends and made life hell for dozens of fellow industry members.
  518. [https://twitter.com/SJBsMama/status/1274259057080180737]
  519.

  521. [https://twitter.com/ChrisAvellone/status/1274259364270899200]

  529. Karissa replied that the title went beyond what she had said and there was no need for embellishment.
  530. [https://twitter.com/SJBsMama/status/1274260235440607232]
  531.

  533. [https://twitter.com/ChrisAvellone/status/1274261663290548225]
  534.
  535. When someone asked Chris not to tag specific people, Chris suggested once again that his experience with Karissa's friend had triggered Karissa's accusations.
  536. [https://twitter.com/ChrisAvellone/status/1274267651993243653]
  537.
  538. In his final comment, Chris said he doubted any of his fans would defend him, since only 2 people know what happened. He then avoided all social media from that point on.
  539. [https://twitter.com/ChrisAvellone/status/1274269170226487301]
  540.
  541. When someone told Karissa her experience wasn't assault, she had a mocking reply, telling him he was an entitled white boy for telling a woman she didn't experience what she experienced.

  560. [https://twitter.com/StillNotSam/status/1274430470290239488]

  564.
  565. Three hours later, Jacqui Collins posted a dirty text Chris had sent her in 2014, mistakenly writing 2013 at first. She claimed she forgave Chris for it at the time, but never forgot about it. She said she was in a relationship at the time and Chris knew that. The text showed her asking Chris for a third-wheeling exit strategy, along with Chris' reply, without providing additional context for the conversation.
  566. [https://twitter.com/jacquicollins_/status/1274509359427383304]
  567.
  568. She explained her reaction to the text, saying it made her feel sick and upset.

  570.
  571. When asked what she meant by the third-wheeling exit strategy, Jacqui Collins provided the follow-up of her conversation with Chris from 2014, showing him apologizing profusely and saying he had completely misunderstood what she meant. Apparently, she was out with a friend who was making out with a guy and she was trying to get away from there.
  572. [https://twitter.com/jacquicollins_/status/1274521754015129602]
  573.
  574. When asked why she forgave it only to bring it up years later, Jacqui Collins claimed she was doing it to speak to his character at the time.
  575. [https://twitter.com/jacquicollins_/status/1274753773001306112]
  576.

  578. [https://twitter.com/jacquicollins_/status/1274774580800806914]
  579.
  580. Half a year before the dirty text, Jacqui Collins had called Chris her boyfriend in another life.
  581. [https://twitter.com/jacquicollins_/status/399457209865613312]
  582.

  604. The next day at noon, she'd read Chris' text and was upset about it, posting it on Twitter for the first time, but with his name blacked out, asking why things like that happened. This time her screenshot included the conversation she was having with him right before his faux pas.

She did not go into details in other tweets.

  694. The Kotaku article came out first, on the the 23rd of June, and mentioned the accusations from Karissa, Jacqui Collins and Kelly, but only Karissa was willing to go into more detail when contacted. Her wording was vague again, referring to her hotel room as though they were in it, without mentioning the roommate. The two witnesses,

  705.
  706. The Bloomberg article from the 24th of June started out about sexual misconduct allegations in the gaming industry in general, but said that some of the most detailed allegations were brought against Avellone. The article went on to mention the accusations from Karissa, Christy Dena, Jacqui Collins and Kelly, but only the first two responded to requests for more details.

  708.
  709. Karissa's accusation sounded unusually mild this time, saying Chris had a hand down her pants, she told him it wasn't a good idea, and he stopped. He was a perfect gentleman the rest of the weekend and it never occurred to her that something had gone wrong that night until she saw other women coming forward with their stories. Karissa said her friendship with Chris ended after he had a difficult relationship with her friend.

  711.
  712. The article then provided the only details found anywhere about Christy Dena's allegation, claiming they met up at a convention in Melbourne in 2013. She went out drinking with him and other friends and he kept buying drinks for the group. She says she took Chris back to her hotel room and then woke up next to him with no clothes on, but with him telling her they hadn't done anything. Why would he say that and why is she quoting him instead of saying what happened? Is it possible they were drunk enough that they decided not to do anything?

  714.
  715. She kept in touch with Chris, but decided to speak up when Karissa's accusations made her think Chris had a pattern of behavior. She's had other uncomfortable incidents involving drinking with other men at video game industry events and it's taken her a long time to learn that people are not in a consenting state when they're drunk.

  813.
  814. In August of 2020, this person who is friends with Chris pointed out that there was even a third person in the room with Chris and Christy Dena on the night that Dena talked about, and that this is why – as Chris was quoted saying by Dena – nothing actually happened.

  816.
  817. Still, after reading Christy Dena's story in the Business Insider article, Karissa wrote on Facebook that it was proof of what would have happened to her as well if she hadn't been on her period that weekend. She once again forgot to mention the roommate sleeping in her room.

  822.
  823. She claimed the crowd that demands proof would never be satisfied with anything any emotionally abused person provided, so she was simply going to state some facts to show the type of character Chris had. She pointed out that she had only seen Chris from September 2013 to September 2014. She then complained solely about the fact that he had mentioned her on Twitter, suggesting his apology to her somehow had negative intentions.
  824. [https://www.twitlonger.com/show/n_1sr9o9b]
  825.
  826. For the Business Insider article from the 3rd of July, Karissa was quoted as saying that Chris forcibly kissed her and tried to put his hand down her pants. Two friends of Karissa's confirmed they'd heard the story in the past: one of them had heard it in 2014 and the other had heard it in 2012 a month after it happened.

  828.
  829. Karissa went into more detail, saying Chris had assaulted her on the first night they met at a convention in 2012. This was the first time in any tweet or interview where she said the incident had happened outside her hotel room,

  833. [https://twitter.com/davidcernat/status/1278768115065729024]
  834.
  835. But she still did not actually mention her roommate, using vague wording about refusing him to suggest something worse could have happened. She claimed she found out about what had happened by talking to Chris and one of the witnesses and that she was shocked and offended by it,

Later that month, in response to tweets that were critical of Kotaku for their lack of tact regarding other stories, Karissa noted that she had insisted on having complete control over how any journalists interviewing her used her words in their articles, and that she would have revoked their permission to use any information from her if they hadn't agreed to all of her demands.
  863. [https://twitter.com/SJBsMama/status/1283415424089182211]
  864.
  865. She believed most journalists are unable to handle such stories responsibly and implied that those who did not accept what they were told at face value were being shady.
  866. [https://twitter.com/SJBsMama/status/1283418486199529472]
  867.
  868. She then called herself a survivor who could advise other survivors on how to deal with the press.

  872. [Exoneration videos - the what really happened caption.png]
  873.
  874. Well, it looks like Karissa has decided to completely reinterpret past events between her and Chris
  875. [https://twitter.com/SJBsMama/status/363040601148628992]
  876.
  877. so she could score points with the people around her.

  881. [https://twitter.com/SJBsMama/status/272597855926104064]
  882.
  883. In fact, it seems to be a pattern of hers.
  884. [https://twitter.com/SJBsMama/status/272672932407410689]
  885.
  886. For instance, during the Ferguson protests of 2014
  887. [https://twitter.com/SJBsMama/status/498848893375766529]
  888.
  889. which happened right next to where she lived

  902. [https://twitter.com/SJBsMama/status/499379939284496385]
  903.
  904. and she said people should believe her take on events because she lived there, had firsthand accounts of what happened and had friends whose family members were cops responding to the nonsense.

  911. [https://twitter.com/Desert_Bell/status/499382964774375424]
  912.
  913. A few days later, she claimed not many – if any – of the looters were actually opportunists from other locations.
  914. [https://twitter.com/SJBsMama/status/500531390014697472]

  916. When activists from Black Lives Matter created a mirror casket as a symbol of the Ferguson protests,
  917. [https://mirrorcasket.com/support]
  918.
  919. she started complaining about it, saying that – considering how violent some protesters had been – it very easily might be meant as a threat.

  921.
  922. Six years later, she had decided it had actually been white supremacists and plain clothes policemen causing property damage that gave the police an excuse to use force at Ferguson.
  923. [https://twitter.com/SJBsMama/status/1266761570312507393]

1054. Chris Avellone has been a writer on many of the best-written video games of all time. Unsurprisingly, his fans are great at sifting through large amounts of information, and that information shows us that he's completely innocent of the absurd exaggerations thrown in his direction. So please, dear viewer, join up with the rest of us and help us exonerate him.
