-
- Hi there! I'm Heather, your Muggle Studies Professor. With open hearts and open minds, we'll take a look at Muggles, diving into various things about their lives, hobbies, and oddities. I hope you will find this class to be enjoyable and educational, so the next time you encounter a Muggle, perhaps you can act a bit more normal around them. xD

Class Details

-
Week 1 - Muggle Pets - Reptiles

-

- Welcome back, students! A few terms ago, I asked for suggestions for what you would like to learn about in future lessons. Muggle pets were suggested by Vana, and we will be covering them this term. Thanks for the great idea!
-

-

- Both magical and Muggle people are known to own cats, rats, and toads. As we are already familiar with those pets ourselves, we'll skip them and stick with pets that are uncommon for witches and wizards to own but common for Muggles to own. We'll cover reptiles, birds, small pets, and dogs this term, starting first with reptiles.

-

- A turtle, pictured above, is a popular choice for a reptile pet. They are considered great for beginners, those who have never owned a reptile before. They reach approximately 8 to 12 inches in length and live an average of 15 to 25 years as a pet. They require a habitat that allows them to swim and has a dry land area where they can rest. Monitoring the temperature of their environment is crucial.

-

- A bearded dragon, shown above, is another popular reptile pet. They are considered fairly easy reptiles to own. They reach up to 24 inches in length and can live up to 10 years. They need a fairly large terrarium with a screened lid to live in. They are finicky about the temperature and will need it to be monitored in addition to providing them with driftwood and rocks to climb on or hide behind. They eat both plants and meat and should be fed a few times a day. Their diet may consist of crickets, mealworms, dark leafy greens, carrots, apples, and bananas.
-

-

- While we by no means covered all of the reptiles that Muggles keep as pets, hopefully learning about the turtle and bearded dragon gives you a picture of the type of reptiles they own.

-
Week 2 - Muggle Pets - Birds

-

- This week, we are going to take a look at a few birds that Muggles keep as pets. You might be surprised to learn that owls are not among them and are not considered good pets in the Muggle world.

- The parakeet, pictured above, is the most popular pet bird for Muggles. They are small in size, easy to care for, and considered to have a friendly personality. They live an average of 7 to 10 years. As you tell by the photo, they come in a variety of colors. While they will spend the majority of their time in their cage, they do typically enjoyed being handled by their owner for a short time each day. Their cage should be large, despite their small size, to remind them of their natural habitat. The cage should include a fleece-lined hut hanging from the top and some sort of liner to ensure easy clean-up. The location of their cage is also important, as it should be placed at eye-level, away from windows and doors, and away from the kitchen. This is due to parakeets being sensitive to drafts and smells. Their diet consists of pelleted food designed for them, dark leafy greens, apples, bananas, and honey sticks treats.

-

- Another bird that Muggles keep as pets is the parrot, shown above. They are not as common though, due to their expensive price and the difficulty of their care. Parrots can live up to 25 years, and depending on the species, can live as long as 80 to 100 years. When Muggles purchase a parrot, they have to consider care for their pet after they pass on as their parrot is likely to outlive them. Parrots need interaction with their owner for at least 2 hours per day. They will spend the rest of their time in a large cage, which should be away from drafts and odors and lined for easy cleaning. They need to have perches in their cage, and they should be different in thickness and material. Their diet consists of fortified pellets with kale, broccoli, papaya, banana, and melon as treats.

-
Week 3 - Muggle Pets - Small Pets

-

- This week, we are going to take a look at a few of the small pets that Muggles own. There are more than we could possibly cover, but hopefully these examples will give you some insight into small Muggle pets.

- Hamsters, pictured above, are popular small pets for Muggles. They are considered very easy to care for and great pets for children. They range from 2 to 7 inches in length and live an average of 1.5 to 2 years. They come in a variety of colors, such as golden, brown, gray, white, and black. They are considered social, playful, and energetic, and they are the most active during the night. They require a habitat with a solid bottom, bedding, and toys. An exercise wheel and/or tunnels are great choices for toys, as they allow the hamster to burn their energy. Some Muggles even have an exercise ball for their hamster, which allows it to run around outside of its cage, safely contained in a ball. A hamster's diet consists of pellets, dark leafy greens, apples, bananas, and raisins.

- Guinea pigs, shown above, are another popular small pet for Muggles and are similarly easy to care for and great for children. They can reach up to a foot in length and 2.5 pounds in weight, and they live up to 8 years. They are known to be gentle, social, and energetic. Unlike hamsters, they are most active during the daytime. They need a habitat with a solid bottom, bedding, and places to burrow or hide. Their diet consists of hay, pellets, dark leafy greens, oranges, bananas, and raisins.

-
Week 4 - Muggle Pets - Dogs

-

-

-

- For our final week of covering Muggle pets, we're going to take a look at dogs. There are seemingly countless breeds of dogs, so we'll cover the care required of all dogs in our lesson today.
-

-

- Dogs are extremely popular pets among Muggles, but they are by no means easy to own. They require housebreaking, handling, training, exercise, grooming, regular vet care, and more. If a Muggle purchases a puppy, they can expect to spend weeks training her to use the restroom outdoors and handling her to get her comfortable with being touched by humans. It's also important to socialize a puppy by introducing them to new people, other dogs, new places, and various situations. A puppy will require training beyond just these things, which will include learning to walk on a leash, sit, stay, and come at the very least. All of these things take time and repetition for a puppy to learn. It's important to note that a dog of any age may require all of this training when a Muggle brings them home.
-

-

- Once a dog is housebroken, used to being handled, socialized, and trained, there are a number of areas of continuous care. A dog will require some sort of exercise every day. Most often, this will be a walk where the owner places the dog on a leash and takes them outside of the home. If this is not possible, the exercise may take the form of playing fetch with a toy inside. Dogs are highly social and will require a lot of interaction with their owner each day. In addition, dog owners can expect to need to take their dog outside to use the restroom at least 3 times a day though many will need 4-5 trips per day. All dogs will require basic grooming through their life. This will include baths and trimming their nails. Depending on the breed of dog, they may require regular haircuts as well.
