- it contains all functions of classical computing plus more (the only sure thing that quantum computer can do better than conventional one is finding new prime numbers
- uses theory of quantum mechanics
- is non-deterministic, there may be multiple outcomes for any given case
- uses 0, 1, superposition
- qubits represent multiple states simultaneously
- it could solve problems that were impossible
- it works in parallel (doing multiple things at the same time) instead of doing things in sequence
