  1. General notes:
  2. I'd recommend following along for the voice acting and various music stings. If you don’t have her, a video of her episodes is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mjPhK63uINM
  3. Her story is unique in that it takes place sometime between the events of Chapter 3 and 4 of the main story rather than as a prelude, so there are minor references to events that occur.
  4.
  5. Episode 1: Now Recruiting: Detective's Assistant
  6.
  7. Kasumi
  8. Haa... The investigation on Shadows isn't proceeding one biiit.
  9.
  10. Kasumi
  11. And the amount of victims just keeps steadily increasing. I even got fired up since I hadn't received such a detective-esque request in a while... Maybe my intuition has gotten dull.
  12.
  13. Kasumi
  14. Or maybe those Shadows are just even more mysterious beings than I thought?
  15.
  16. Kasumi
  17. Oh no~ Scary~ I'm kind of averse to such a horror-ish premise.
  18.
  19. Kasumi
  20. Well whatever. At this rate I'll just be a freeloading deadbeat.
  21.
  22. Kasumi
  23. I need to put in my best for the folks I've been relying on at Kaon, too.
  24.
  25. Kasumi
  26. I've gotta do my best to resolve this incident. First things first, the witness testimonies.
  27.
  28. Kasumi
  29. Eyewitnesses to the Shadows have often been left confused. My speaking skills are definitely not my strong point, so getting information out of them might be a problem.
  30.
  31. Kasumi
  32. Let's do this.
  33.
  34. Kasumi
  35. But before that, a cup of coffee to ward off the sleep...♪[1]
  36.
  37. Kasumi
  38. ...Uhya?!
  39.
  40. Kasumi
  41. Ah, you surprised me! P-Please don't just suddenly barge in here without saying anything!
  42.
  43. Kasumi
  44. Umm, who might you be again? Did you have some business at the Kaon guild house?
  45.
  46. Kasumi
  47. Ah, wait, I'll deduct it myself. I'm a detective, after all.
  48.
  49. Kasumi
  50. Right after waking up and without hearing you out, I'll attempt to correctly guess the intentions of an unknown visitor such as yourself♪
  51.
  52. Yuuki
  53. 1. I'll be in your care.
  54. 2. Just waking up? It's already noon, you know?
  55.
  56. Option 1.
  57.
  58. Kasumi
  59. S-Sure. It's actually became kind of hard to do with you being that fired up about it.
  60.
  61. Kasumi
  62. Lets see... Ah, I seem to recall seeing your face.
  63.
  64. Kasumi
  65. The information should be around... Hmm, hmm?
  66.
  67. Kasumi
  68. Woah, please don't just come over here and peek... I can't just show this information off to outsiders, you understand?
  69.
  70. Option 2.
  71.
  72. Kasumi
  73. Fussy, aren't you. There are a lot of Shadow sightings at night so my investigations keep me awake.
  74.
  75. Kasumi
  76. One's lifestyle must be adjusted to complement the investigation, of course.
  77.
  78. Kasumi
  79. The exemplary detective. Huhu... I's definitely not because I like to sleep in, alright?!
  80.
  81. End of branches
  82.
  83. Kasumi
  84. That being said, I see, I pretty much get it now.
  85.
  86. Kasumi
  87. You're Yuuki, right? I recall seeing you around a few times.
  88.
  89. Kasumi
  90. That, and I overhear the other members of Kaon happily speaking about you often.
  91.
  92. Kasumi
  93. Pretty well liked, aren't ya.
  94.
  95. Kasumi
  96. You've got a reputation for being a kind, good person. Though tossing aside preconceptions and judging you fairly is definitely part of the detective shtick, you don't appear to be a bad person.
  97.
  98. Kasumi
  99. Hmm. Well anyway, I'll take this chance to introduce myself as well.
  100.
  101. Kasumi
  102. After all, humans are generally one to regard the unknown with fear.
  103.
  104. Kasumi
  105. I'm Kaon's Kasumi. Before this I worked solo, but due to various reasons I've been taken up here for the time being.
  106.
  107. Kasumi
  108. My previous job was as a detective going around solving incidents in town. In both my current and past job, I've stuck to the mental work rather than combat.
  109.
  110. Kasumi
  111. I'm usually out in the field doing research so the chance to properly meet you has never really presented itself. Well, pleased to make your acquaintance.
  112.
  113. Kasumi
  114. Hmm? Hmm... That flier you've got there. It seems familiar.
  115.
  116. Kasumi
  117. Ah... That's right, these were the recruitment fliers for a detective's assistant I put up around town back when I was working solo.
  118.
  119. Kasumi
  120. Pretty nostalgic thing for you to bring in.
  121.
  122. Kasumi
  123. There was a time where I hit my limit doing things alone, so I decided to try looking for an assistant.
  124.
  125. Kasumi
  126. Thought now that I'm with Kaon, I'm not actually looking to recruit one anymore.
  127.
  128. Kasumi
  129. O-oh, you seem pretty disappointed...
  130.
  131. Kasumi
  132. I see, you're looking for a part time job right now, eh? So you saw this flier and thought you should try getting that detective's assistant job?
  133.
  134. Kasumi
  135. And so you asked around for where I was, which brought you here to Kaon. I see, it's all connected now.
  136.
  137. Kasumi
  138. What should I do... The Shadow investigation is starting to hit a dead end...
  139.
  140. Kasumi
  141. The others in Kaon have their own jobs to take care of too... So I actually have just considered getting an assistant.
  142.
  143. Kasumi
  144. Well, Yuuki doesn't seem to be a bad person. Guess I'll give them a chance.
  145.
  146. Kasumi
  147. Well aren't you the lucky one. I was actually just thinking about hiring an assistant again.
  148.
  149. Kasumi
  150. If you've got the motivation, why not help me out with my detective work?
  151.
  152. Kasumi
  153. Lets see. Your wages as an assistant will come out of my pocket.
  154.
  155. Kasumi
  156. Being a rookie here at Kaon means my salary is on the lower end, so your pay won't be the greatest.
  157.
  158. Kasumi
  159. If that's still fine with you, then how about it?
  160.
  161. Kasumi
  162. Alright then. If possible, I'd like you to start helping out today.
  163.
  164. Kasumi
  165. First of all, how about a coffee? While we're drinking, we can discuss the details of how we'll resolve this unsettling incident.
  166.
  167. Kasumi
  168. Huhu. Looking forward to working with you, Assistant♪ [2]
  169.
  170. [1] She always refers to coffee using kanji (珈琲) rather than kana (コーヒー).
  171.
  172. [2] Her nickname for you is 助手くん (joshu-kun, lit. assistant-kun). Interestingly, in the original Princess Connect she uses 相棒 (aibou, lit. partner) instead.
  173.
  174. Episode 2: Early Morning Mysteries
  175.
  176. Kasumi
  177. Okay... All ready♪
  178.
  179. Kasumi
  180. Properly cleaned my teeth and brushed my hair.
  181.
  182. Kasumi
  183. From every angle, a cute detective girl... No, a magnificent Great Detective♪
  184.
  185. Kasumi
  186. My daily lifestyle's been thrown off lately, so I was worried my skin had gotten a bit rough.
  187.
  188. Kasumi
  189. After trying the lotion I borrowed from Maho, it's back to being smooth and healthy.
  190.
  191. Kasumi
  192. Huhu. Last night, Yuuki... Assistant and I ended up having to call it off after the explanation of the job's details.
  193.
  194. Kasumi
  195. From today forward, once again the Shadow incident investigation resumes!
  196.
  197. Kasumi
  198. Uu~. After Assistant left yesterday, I realized just how unkempt my bedhead was. How embarrassing.
  199.
  200. Kasumi
  201. Even though I just read in a book that "First impressions are the most important part of a relationship" the other day...
  202.
  203. Kasumi
  204. But! It's not too late, I can still put on a cool demeanor.
  205.
  206. Kasumi
  207. I'd hate if Assistant thought of me as an incompetent detective, so I've got to try my best.
  208.
  209. Kasumi
  210. ...that being said, Assistant sure is late.
  211.
  212. Kasumi
  213. Suddenly late? His motivation's already gone?
  214.
  215. Kasumi
  216. It really felt like he would give his best after talking with him a bit yesterday, though...
  217.
  218. Kasumi
  219. He was all fired up and said "I don't really know much about detectives, but I'll definitely learn. I'll do my best as an assistant" didn't he...
  220.
  221. Kasumi
  222. Maybe I'm the one that was mistaken about how motivated he was.
  223.
  224. Kasumi
  225. Uuu. I thought I'd built up a lot of patience from having to conduct stakeouts for investigations in the past, but...
  226.
  227. Kasumi
  228. I wonder, why am I so unusually anxious this time?
  229.
  230. Kasumi
  231. If it's with Yuuki, maybe just like my beloved mystery novels...
  232.
  233. Kasumi
  234. I was kind of hoping for a big revelation to flourish from my heart.
  235.
  236. Kasumi
  237. I wonder, it's kind of strange. I've only just met them, and yet...
  238.
  239. Kasumi
  240. ...Uhya!?
  241.
  242. Kasumi
  243. Ah, Assistant! Entering at a time like this... you've got some nerve keeping your employer waiting!
  244.
  245. Kasumi
  246. Why were you late? If you've got an excuse, then out with it!
  247.
  248. Kasumi
  249. Huh? You were caught up in a mysterious incident this morning and so you were late?
  250.
  251. Kasumi
  252. Trying to take me for a fool, huh? Did you think that excuse would work?
  253.
  254. Kasumi
  255. Though honestly... I am a bit curious. Please explain in detail, Assistant.
  256.
  257. Kasumi
  258. Hmm. So at this Sarendia Orphanage you're currently residing in, the incident occurred when you were preparing breakfast.
  259.
  260. Kasumi
  261. Huh. A knife suddenly shattered in the middle of cooking?
  262.
  263. Kasumi
  264. Part of the blade that broke off wounded your arm, and so treating that ate up a lot of your time...?
  265.
  266. Kasumi
  267. Okay, let's see that arm.
  268.
  269. Kasumi
  270. There definitely is a fresh wound here... so you don’t seem to be lying.
  271.
  272. Kasumi
  273. Well, I'm at least relieved that it wasn't a murder case.
  274.
  275. Kasumi
  276. Huh? Can I deduce how it happened?
  277.
  278. Kasumi
  279. Who do you think I am. I'm the great detective Kaon boasts about, you know?
  280.
  281. Kasumi
  282. But, asking the detective for everything is against the rules. First, think about it yourself. I want to hear what your deduction is... Assistant♪
  283.
  284. Yuuki
  285. 1. No idea.
  286. 2. An unfortunate accident.
  287.
  288. Option 1:
  289.
  290. Kasumi
  291. You gave up way too soon... Try giving it a bit more thought.
  292.
  293. Kasumi
  294. What we all possess is intelligence! It's a waste if we don't utilize it effectively, don't you think?
  295.
  296. Option 2:
  297.
  298. Kasumi
  299. Yep. That conclusion is definitely the most noble, since it doesn't make you feel bad for accusing anyone of being a bad person.
  300.
  301. Kasumi
  302. Though thinking this incident was a mere accident seems a little unnatural.
  303.
  304. Kasumi
  305. Well if that's the explanation you've come up with, it doesn't matter if it's correct or not.
  306.
  307. Kasumi
  308. A detective is one who's job is to pull together an explanation that anyone can agree with.
  309.
  310. Kasumi
  311. To spin a tale that satisfies the client who years for the truth.
  312.
  313. Kasumi
  314. If you're satisfied with it being an unfortunate accident, then I've got nothing to say about it.
  315.
  316. End of branch.
  317.
  318. Kasumi
  319. Huhu. You're making quite the unsatisfied face there, Assistant.
  320.
  321. Kasumi
  322. Can't be helped, huh? It's a Great Detective's job after all, so I'll give you the correct answer.
  323.
  324. Kasumi
  325. Before I come to a conclusion, let me get one of the facts straight. The one preparing breakfast, that is to say, the one that was cooking, was that you, Assistant?
  326.
  327. Kasumi
  328. It wasn't? Well, you didn't seem to be the type to cook anyway...
  329.
  330. Kasumi
  331. Hm. This morning, it was your housemate, this Kokkoro, who was in charge of cooking, eh?
  332.
  333. Kasumi
  334. W-Wha..? Kokkoro was definitely not the culprit?
  335.
  336. Kasumi
  337. That sure is lot of trust you placed in her. Suspecting those closest to you first is the most basic of basics, you know?
  338.
  339. Kasumi
  340. But well, rest assured. My deduction does not pin Kokkoro as the suspect.
  341.
  342. Kasumi
  343. I'll be frank about it. The suspect was you, Assistant.
  344.
  345. Kasumi
  346. I seem to recall that you have some mysterious power that allows you to increase your allies' combat prowess, correct?
  347.
  348. Kasumi
  349. Yep... I looked into a few things about you, is why I knew.
  350.
  351. Kasumi
  352. Huhu. From what I've said, you should be able to tell what my deduction will be, right?
  353.
  354. Kasumi
  355. Yes. You used that aforementioned suspicious power to strengthen Kokkoro.
  356.
  357. Kasumi
  358. It was probably involuntary. You probably thought to yourself "Do your best with cooking~♪" or some such.
  359.
  360. Kasumi
  361. And through use of that power, Kokkoro’s physical strength rose.
  362.
  363. Kasumi
  364. Kokkoro probably went about cooking as usual.
  365.
  366. Kasumi
  367. But, since her physical strength had grown, the knife she was using couldn't take it and shattered.
  368.
  369. Kasumi
  370. And that's the truth of the matter.
  371.
  372. Kasumi
  373. Of course, I didn't conduct an on-site investigation and such, so we can't confirm whether or not this deduction was correct.
  374.
  375. Kasumi
  376. If one thing can be said from this, is that your strange power doesn't solely have merits.
  377.
  378. Kasumi
  379. It's a convenient, miracle-like power, but you need to be wary of how you use it.
  380.
  381. Kasumi
  382. The next time, you may not be let off with just a wound. That's the lesson you can take away from this incident.
  383.
  384. Kasumi
  385. Huhu. A round of applause, huh? It's making me a little self-conscious.
  386.
  387. Kasumi
  388. Good, good. You've got quite the relieved expression now... Assistant. That I was able to make a deduction that the client was satisfied with fills me with a feeling of affirmation.
  389.
  390. Kasumi
  391. Well, that's enough. Let's end the mock deduction here and get started with work.
  392.
  393. Kasumi
  394. We've got more urgent incidents that need solving.
  395.
  396. Kasumi
  397. Time to go investigate, Assistant. I'm looking forward to seeing your performance.
  398.
  399. Episode 3: Shadow Capturing Investigation
  400.
  401. Kasumi
  402. Huhu. And thus, the investigation begins, Assistant.
  403.
  404. Kasumi
  405. Yes, our investigation shall focus on the recent mysterious phenomenon plaguing the town, the so called Shadows.
  406.
  407. Kasumi
  408. It's a request from your benefactors the Sarendia Orphanage, you know?
  409.
  410. Kasumi
  411. "The children are afraid, so if possible I'd like you to solve this incident. Or at the very least, determine the cause of this phenomenon", they said.
  412.
  413. Kasumi
  414. Protecting the children's smiles—quite the job worth doing.
  415.
  416. Kasumi
  417. Though, regrettably... I currently understand very little about why these Shadows are appearing.
  418.
  419. Kasumi
  420. Even though in the time since, I'd worn my soles out from investigating every day.
  421.
  422. Kasumi
  423. There's never been a similar case in the past, either. Truly, an unprecedented mysterious incident.
  424.
  425. Kasumi
  426. I'll give you an overview of what I know.
  427.
  428. Kasumi
  429. Sightings of these strange beings, these Shadows, have recently been occurring solely in this town— Landsol. Whether or not we can assume that they are a species of monster is unclear.
  430.
  431. Kasumi
  432. They mainly appear at night, so treating them as ghosts seems to be the best way to catch a sighting.
  433.
  434. Kasumi
  435. Engaging them in combat seems to be an option for the brave, but there doesn't seem to be any other way to deal with them. Just as their name suggests, they are quite the shadowy beings.
  436.
  437. Kasumi
  438. Also, there are many cases of Shadows taking on the forms of witnesses' acquaintances.
  439.
  440. Kasumi
  441. At a glance they are indistinguishable; an exact copy of their outer appearance.
  442.
  443. Kasumi
  444. Their eyes glow with a strange light and their bodies are surrounded by a dark mist... Though their outlines seem to be indistinct at times.
  445.
  446. Kasumi
  447. They also seem to repeat the same actions without fail and repeat the same cryptic lines over and over.
  448.
  449. Kasumi
  450. The consensus is that they are beings without intelligence and incapable of thought.
  451.
  452. Kasumi
  453. If they were just that, frankly, they'd be harmless.
  454.
  455. Kasumi
  456. Their creepiness aside... There have been instances of Shadows harming humans, so they can't simply be left alone.
  457.
  458. Kasumi
  459. Hmm. You were also a witness. And at that time, you even fought with them, or so I've heard.
  460.
  461. Kasumi
  462. That prior experience... is one of the reasons I chose you to be my assistant.
  463.
  464. Kasumi
  465. I've only glanced at Shadows from afar, so I haven't been able to discern much about them.
  466.
  467. Kasumi
  468. If possible, I'd like for you to go into detail about when you made contact with those Shadows.
  469.
  470. Kasumi
  471. Pardon the sudden vague question, but what did you feel at the time?
  472.
  473. Yuuki
  474. 1. I don't really know.
  475. 2. I was scared.
  476.
  477. Option 1:
  478.
  479. Kasumi
  480. Well, honest, aren't you. Can't really use that as reference, though.
  481.
  482. Kasumi
  483. Aah, I didn't mean to put you down. Getting attacked by Shadows doesn't really leave you with a chance to obverse them, after all.
  484.
  485. Option 2:
  486.
  487. Kasumi
  488. I see... That actually falls in line with what other eyewitnesses have experienced.
  489.
  490. Kasumi
  491. The reason is unknown, but just laying eyes on a Shadow causes intense discomfort.
  492.
  493. Kasumi
  494. A strange feeling of dread that eats away at your core.
  495.
  496. Kasumi
  497. This disturbance of people's hearts is what causes the fear. There's a chance that they emit some sort of special magic, as well.
  498.
  499. End of branches.
  500.
  501. Kasumi
  502. Regardless, cases of Shadows attacking humans are very rare.
  503.
  504. Kasumi
  505. Since they don't really have any will, they typically just move without purpose.
  506.
  507. Kasumi
  508. Attacks by Shadows like you experienced are the few exceptions.
  509.
  510. Kasumi
  511. The reason they do attack humans is unknown, but the chance of a repeat case is high, I believe.
  512.
  513. Kasumi
  514. Huhu. That's right, my apologies for treating you as bait but...
  515.
  516. Kasumi
  517. The chance of you being targeted by a Shadow... I'm kind of looking forward to it.
  518.
  519. Kasumi
  520. I've yet to deal with them in person, after all. I can come up with all kinds of theories in my head, but in the end they're all just armchair theories.
  521.
  522. Kasumi
  523. With all being that said... I'd like to defeat a Shadow and capture it, if possible.
  524.
  525. Kasumi
  526. Shadows usually just vanish into mist after taking damage... so it might be a bit difficult.
  527.
  528. Kasumi
  529. I've prepared a special magic-infused bottle. With this, I'd like to draw a Shadow in and seal it.
  530.
  531. Kasumi
  532. If we're able to capture one, I'll be sure to thoroughly examine it.
  533.
  534. Kasumi
  535. Although, I'm not sure what to do if a Shadow doesn't show up...
  536.
  537. Kasumi
  538. Until then, let's investigate by getting some eyewitness testimonies.
  539.
  540. Kasumi
  541. Time to head here and there, Assistant.
  542.
  543. Kasumi
  544. Ehehe. Almost seems like a date, huh...♪
  545.
  546. Episode 4: The Underclassman Detective Girl
  547.
  548. Kasumi
  549. Huhun. It was a simple deduction, Assistant.
  550.
  551. Kasumi
  552. It wasn't even much of a deduction. I just gathered statistics about where Shadows were seen and their behavioral patterns.
  553.
  554. Kasumi
  555. And with that, I made a Shadow distribution map of those locations and was able to determine a focal point.
  556.
  557. Kasumi
  558. That is to say, the places Shadows appear... is what I was able to estimate.
  559.
  560. Kasumi
  561. It was rough, you know. I had to be direct about it and just plot points on a map...
  562.
  563. Kasumi
  564. Then I had to walk to the actual locations, then fill up any discrepancies between fact and fiction.
  565.
  566. Kasumi
  567. Though I'm pretty good at it and I love that sort of thing, so it wasn't too much of a pain.
  568.
  569. Kasumi
  570. A lot of time sure has passed. I'm sorry for having you tag along, Assistant.
  571.
  572. Kasumi
  573. Things like helping me get testimonies, organizing documents, grabbing food... I relied on you a lot, huh.
  574.
  575. Kasumi
  576. You can say you were just doing your job, but I'm still very grateful.
  577.
  578. Kasumi
  579. There were a lot of conclusions I wouldn't have reached on my own, too.
  580.
  581. Kasumi
  582. But, it's not time to relax just yet. From here on out is the real thing, Assistant.
  583.
  584. Kasumi
  585. As I said, I believe I have been able to determine where Shadows will appear.
  586.
  587. Kasumi
  588. However, I haven't verified anything yet. There's also the possibility that the passage of time may have had an effect.
  589.
  590. Kasumi
  591. Additionally, there isn't just one location where they seem to spawn.
  592.
  593. Kasumi
  594. Even within just the town, there seem to be around ten locations. That's why even if the locations have been determined, statistically this still has me a bit worried.
  595.
  596. Kasumi
  597. For now we'll focus on the place which seems to be the biggest hot spot of Shadows among them. We'll perform our stakeout around there.
  598.
  599. Kasumi
  600. Just as planned, if a Shadow appears, we capture it. Once we capture the real thing, through research and observation, we may be able to determine the truth about these Shadows.
  601.
  602. Kasumi
  603. I've deducted that a Shadow should appear here within a few days. There's nothing to do from here on out besides wait patiently, so if you've got other matters to attend do, it's fine for you to leave for a bit.
  604.
  605. Kasumi
  606. I'm really sorry about the all-night stakeout. My financial situation is also a bit strained, so I can't even afford to pay you for overtime.
  607.
  608. Kasumi
  609. And unlike me... You have family awaiting your return, don't you?
  610.
  611. Kasumi
  612. ...Assistant? At least give a response. Heeeey?
  613.
  614. Kasumi
  615. Huh? Assistant, you're not asleep are you...?
  616.
  617. Kasumi
  618. Though it's great and all you go to bed on time like a good boy, you're still in the middle of work, you know?
  619.
  620. Kasumi
  621. Hya!? What is this, it's bright...!
  622.
  623. Beginning of dream
  624.
  625. Kasumi
  626. Zzz, zzz...♪
  627.
  628. Kasumi
  629. n, nn....? hua?
  630.
  631. Kasumi
  632. H-huh? I was sleep...? I feel like I had a weird dream.
  633.
  634. Kasumi
  635. Ah, good morning... Yuuki-senpai. Senpai came to wake me up, huh?
  636.
  637. Kasumi
  638. But why is Senpai in my... in First Year A class's classroom? Even though you're an upperclassman... It's strange, isn't it?
  639.
  640. Yuuki
  641. 1. Try to deduce it.
  642. 2. I wanted to meet with Kasumi-chan.
  643.
  644. Option 1:
  645.
  646. Kasumi
  647. Eeh? Ah, yeah I really love making deductions and I really admire those Great Detectives in stories and all...
  648.
  649. Kasumi
  650. But the reason those Great Detectives in those mystery novels always seem to be able to discern the truth... is because the author already has the answer in mind, you know?
  651.
  652. Kasumi
  653. They themselves set up the problems and just present the answer via the Great Detective.
  654.
  655. Kasumi
  656. That's why in this reality without an author, coming up with a solution is a lot more difficult.
  657.
  658. Kasumi
  659. Ah, no, I'll still give it a try.
  660.
  661. Option 2:
  662.
  663. Kasumi
  664. Hu, huh.....? What do you mean...?
  665.
  666. Kasumi
  667. By the way Senpai, don’t you refer to me as "Kirihara-san"? W-Why suddenly the "-chan"?
  668.
  669. Kasumi
  670. Aah, no, it's not like I dislike it or anything.
  671.
  672. Kasumi
  673. I've always looked up to the Senpai that would take the initiative for anyone at anytime... so I also wanted to get a little c-closer to you.
  674.
  675. End of branches
  676.
  677. Kasumi
  678. Aah... It just came to me. I might have got the reason Senpai is in First Year A class's classroom.
  679.
  680. Kasumi
  681. Senpai. You came to return the mystery novel I lent to you the other day, didn't you?
  682.
  683. Kasumi
  684. That's right I did lend you one, that work I recommended.
  685.
  686. Kasumi
  687. It was a bit of a special book since the truth portion was hidden due to the binding... I attempted to deduce the solution on my own, as well.[1]
  688.
  689. Kasumi
  690. I wanted to hear someone else's impressions, so I asked Senpai to also read it.
  691.
  692. Kasumi
  693. You've already finished reading it huh~ It's writing style was pretty complex, so I didn't think it would be such an easy read.
  694.
  695. Kasumi
  696. Ehehe. I've always yearned to declare various deductions together with someone.
  697.
  698. Kasumi
  699. It's just like in those mysteries... Strange deductions, misguided deductions, let's keep on discussing them♪
  700.
  701. Kasumi
  702. I don't have any close friends that I can discuss things I love with, after all...
  703.
  704. Kasumi
  705. That I got to know Senpai and I'm able to happily talk about these things, I'm very glad.
  706.
  707. Kasumi
  708. I'd like to be a little brighter and get along with others normally...
  709.
  710. Kasumi
  711. Despite that, I'm still a bit... introverted. I can't really speak well with anyone besides Senpai.
  712.
  713. Kasumi
  714. ...Senpai? What's wrong, you have a strange expression.
  715.
  716. Kasumi
  717. Could it be, my deduction was off?
  718.
  719. Kasumi
  720. Then, why did Senpai come to my classroom? Umm~ a hint, please!
  721.
  722. Kasumi
  723. Huh? You were passing by and saw me... so you just wanted to call out to me?
  724.
  725. Kasumi
  726. It seems like I was sleeping so sorry for waking me up, you say...?
  727.
  728. Kasumi
  729. Ahaha. Of course, that's right... that's reality.
  730.
  731. Kasumi
  732. The reasons for things aren't always a per-prepared mystery.
  733.
  734. Kasumi
  735. The truth is always such a mundane thing, isn't it.
  736.
  737. Kasumi
  738. I've thought about this before plenty of times. And yet, it's still kind of sad, even regrettable, in a way.
  739.
  740. End of dream
  741.
  742. Ames
  743. Alright, good job.
  744.
  745. Ames
  746. What you saw right now was something like a dream. Once you wake up, you'll forget all about it.
  747.
  748. Ames
  749. Something like, well, a movie... used to restore the memories of you and a certain someone you've shared a bond with.
  750.
  751. Ames
  752. I'm the director and you guys are the actors. Do you get this explanation?
  753.
  754. Ames
  755. I still can't really recover any meaningful memories at the moment, so for now you don't have to worry about it.
  756.
  757. Ames
  758. And above all, I've got a bit of advice for you this time so I've interfered like this.
  759.
  760. Ames
  761. At the moment, the only time you and I can meet is within these dreams... So I haven't really conversed with you like this outside of them.
  762.
  763. Ames
  764. Anyway. Yuuki, I think it's for the best not to get involved with those Shadows.
  765.
  766. Ames
  767. Those things are just bugs to this world. They were somehow warped into being from the ill-will released by the forced "Reconstruction"; just a discrepancy that broke out in this world.[2]
  768.
  769. Ames
  770. I have no idea what adverse effects coming into contact with one will have. In the worst case, you might even become buggy yourself... And if you're infected, that would be a horrible turn of events.
  771.
  772. Ames
  773. Well at the very least, I can give you a bit of protection. I have my limits, though... Just bear in mind the adage "Don't touch a god and you won't get cursed.", as it goes.[3]
  774.
  775. Ames
  776. Please mention this to Kasumi as well.
  777.
  778. Ames
  779. She is a Great Detective... Getting wrapped up in evil intentions and incidents is her job, after all.
  780.
  781. Ames
  782. Or at least, the desire to be one is what she clings to.
  783.
  784. Ames
  785. If she continues on like this, she'll get exhausted and may even collapse.
  786.
  787. Ames
  788. You support her, heal her, and give her protection... Yuuki.
  789.
  790. Ames
  791. After all, you're the one that she admires.
  792.
  793. Ames
  794. And to not betray those expectations, make sure you show your cool side, okay?
  795.
  796. End of Ames conversation
  797.
  798. Kasumi
  799. Zzz, zzz...♪
  800.
  801. Kasumi
  802. n, nyuu... hua, huh?
  803.
  804. Kasumi
  805. I fell asleep? There's no way! In the middle of the stakeout, no less!
  806.
  807. Kasumi
  808. Aaah, Assistant is asleep too! Wake up!
  809.
  810. Kasumi
  811. Wait a second, why are you holding on to me as you sleep? I'm not a stuffed animal, you know?
  812.
  813. Kasumi
  814. C-can't move... If a Shadow were to appear right now that'd be serious trouble. There's no way to communicate with it, so it'll probably get away.
  815.
  816. Kasumi
  817. No wait, in the worst case... A Shadow may have appeared while we were out cold?
  818.
  819. Kasumi
  820. I'll try inspecting the area's magical power.
  821.
  822. Kasumi
  823. Phew, that's good... It seems somehow a Shadow has yet to appear.
  824.
  825. Kasumi
  826.
  827. Shadows have that strange magic floating around them. In fact, they seem to produce that strange magic from within themselves.
  828.
  829. Kasumi
  830. They leave traces of that magic around when they appear or perform actions. This, too, was knowledge gained from my steady investigation.
  831.
  832. Kasumi
  833. Huhuhu. Getting closer and closer to these enigmatic Shadows' true form.
  834.
  835. Kasumi
  836. Assistant? At least give a response... Actually, he's asleep so that’s probably not happenning.
  837.
  838. Kasumi
  839. Jeez. Where'd all that motivation go.
  840.
  841. Kasumi
  842. Even though we're wrapped up in the middle of an unprecedented incident... He just sleeps there so peacefully.
  843.
  844. Kasumi
  845. You should feel a bit more tension, Assistant.
  846.
  847. Kasumi
  848. That's fine though. This is my case...
  849.
  850. Kasumi
  851. You're well-intentioned after all... No, actually, you've only just tagged along as a job. I can't force you to feel anxious.
  852.
  853. Kasumi
  854. However, I've always... dreamt of days like this, resolving difficult cases, together with Senpai.
  855.
  856. Kasumi
  857. ....nn? "Senpai"? Why'd I refer to him in such a way?
  858.
  859. Kasumi
  860. I don't really get it. Quite the puzzle.
  861.
  862. Kasumi
  863. And for some reason, it feels as if my thoughts are avoiding the solution to the puzzle...
  864.
  865. Kasumi
  866. Aah, today's a just a day full of mysterious happenings, huh?
  867.
  868. Kasumi
  869. The job of a Great Detective is never done.
  870.
  871. Kasumi
  872. And that's why... get up already Assistant. Lets solve this incident together!
  873.
  874. [1] 袋とじ (fukurotoji) is a particular binding technique found in Japan and a few other Asian countires. Look it up yourself if you want a visual clarification.
  875.
  876. [2] She's referring to bugs in the programming sense, not insects.
  877.
  878. [3] The phrase 触らぬ神に祟りなし (sawarunu kami ni tatarinashi) is a Japanese idiom. The English equivalent would be to "let sleeping dogs lie".
  879.
  880. Episode 5: Encounter! Unidentified Entity
  881.
  882. Kasumi
  883. Hmm. This investigation has stalled for a lot longer than I imagined.
  884.
  885. Kasumi
  886. We've already spent three days observing a probable source of Shadows. As of now, there have been no results.
  887.
  888. Kasumi
  889. These Shadows have no shadow or form to be seen... What an appropriate expression... [1]
  890.
  891. Kasumi
  892. My deduction could have been wrong, or our luck could have simply been bad and we won't be able to go through with the plan.
  893.
  894. Kasumi
  895. Today's the last day of the stakeout... If there really ends up being no results, a change in thinking may be in order.
  896.
  897. Kasumi
  898. I can't just keep wasting time forever.
  899.
  900. Kasumi
  901. Killing time together with Assistant when we idly chatted, played hand games, or ate anpan... The stakeout had its share of enjoyable moments. [2]
  902.
  903. Kasumi
  904. Though in actuality, there are people living in fear of these Shadows. That's why I was tasked with this.
  905.
  906. Kasumi
  907. If I keep taking things casually, this incident will just never get resolved. And that would be a problem.
  908.
  909. Kasumi
  910. I am a Great Detective. Per the client's wishes, the incident must be resolved.
  911.
  912. Kasumi
  913. Huh? I thought I saw a figure at the Shadow's estimated spawn location... Jeez, it was just Assistant.
  914.
  915. Kasumi
  916. You sure are motivated. Already on site?
  917.
  918. Kasumi
  919. Shadow sightings have primarily been at night, so the stakeout would begin after sundown... is what I told you, wasn't it? I've even taken up all your time during the day already.
  920.
  921. Kasumi
  922. Though I've been lent a vacant house nearby so I've been keeping watch all day.
  923.
  924. Kasumi
  925. When you arrive at night to take over being a lookout I take a nap but... I'm still pretty sleep deprived so I'm a little spaced out.
  926.
  927. Kasumi
  928. If I keep up this lifestyle, I'll end up being useless.
  929.
  930. Kasumi
  931. That's why today would be the last stakeout attempt... n, nn?
  932.
  933. Shadow
  934. ...........
  935.
  936. Kasumi
  937. ....Eh?
  938.
  939. Kasumi
  940. Wait, that's...? No way, a Shadow!?
  941.
  942. Kasumi
  943. It finally appeared! Alright! My deduction was correct after all!
  944.
  945. Kasumi
  946. According to plan, lets capture it! Draw that Shadow's attention, Assistant!
  947.
  948. Kasumi
  949. You've been attacked by Shadows before... It's just an assumption on my part that it will happen again, but you should still make good bait.
  950.
  951. Kasumi
  952. While you're distracting that Shadow, I'll find a chance to use that magic tool I prepared to capture it!
  953.
  954. Kasumi
  955. ...Assistant? Come on, respond! Do you have some reservations about this?
  956.
  957. Yuuki
  958. 1. Do as you were told.
  959. 2. Remain dumbfounded.
  960.
  961. Option1:
  962.
  963. Kasumi
  964. That's a good boy, Assistant! Now then, time to resolve this incident!
  965.
  966. Option 2:
  967.
  968. Kasumi
  969. Uh, why are you just staring blankly?
  970.
  971. Kasumi
  972. It's believed that Shadows are typically harmless, but cases of humans being harmed exist! If you let your guard down, you'll get hurt!
  973.
  974. End of branches
  975.
  976. Kasumi
  977. Okay. For now let's fall back over here... Assistant!
  978.
  979. Kasumi
  980. Anyway, why'd a Shadow just suddenly appear right by us? That was dangerous.
  981.
  982. Kasumi
  983. Shadows don't possess anything like a consciousness... is the commonly accepted opinion.
  984.
  985. Kasumi
  986. Even if our little stakeout was discovered, I was sure there wouldn't be a problem.
  987.
  988. Kasumi
  989. Huh? You say, that Shadow looked just like me, so you approached it and called out to it...?
  990.
  991. Shadow
  992. ........
  993.
  994. Kasumi
  995. Certainly, that Shadow matches my outer appearance perfectly. [3]
  996.
  997. Kasumi
  998. It's like looking into a mirror. It gives me a pretty distressing feeling.
  999.
  1000. Kasumi
1001. However, that's just as expected. For whatever reason, Shadows adopt the exact appearances of people that already exist.
  1002.
  1003. Kasumi
1004. That is to say, this time, it was just happenstance that this Shadow took on my appearance.
  1005.
  1006. Kasumi
1007. The fact that we were nearby for several days on our stakeout may also have something to do with it.
  1008.
  1009. Kasumi
1010. Something like that could mean it's just in their nature to copy the appearances of any nearby humans.
  1011.
  1012. Kasumi
1013. Well, let's just save that discussion for later. Right now, our focus needs to be on capturing that Shadow.
  1014.
  1015. Kasumi
1016. Let's go, Assistant! I'd like you to use that mysterious power you have to strengthen me!
  1017.
  1018. Kasumi
1019. My strength is in my mental capabilities, after all. I'm much less suited for combat compared to the others at Kaon!
  1020.
  1021. Kasumi
1022. nnn! Alright, I'm overflowing with power! Thanks, Assistant♪
  1023.
  1024. Kasumi
1025. Alright you Shadow, get tied in my policeman's rope and come quietly!
  1026.
  1027. Shadow
  1028. ........
  1029.
  1030. Shadow
  1031. "Sorry"
  1032.
  1033. Kasumi
  1034. .....!? Huh?
  1035.
  1036. Shadow
1037. "S-S-S, Sorry" "Sorry" "Sorry, sorry""
  1038.
  1039. Kasumi
1040. Wha, why is it apologizing? No, as I recall, Shadows had a tendency to repeat meaningless phrases?
  1041.
  1042. Kasumi
1043. Pay it no mind, capture it! That's probably the right answer!
  1044.
  1045. Shadow
1046. "There was another detective besides me, huh" "Did you forget the ironclad rule of a detective" [4]
  1047.
  1048. Kasumi
1049. Q-Quiet! Don't speak in my voice! It's making me nervous!
  1050.
  1051. Shadow
1052. "Sorry" "It's embarrassing" "Please forget about it, Senpai" [4]
  1053.
1054. "That, was my idealized self" [4]
  1055.
1056. [1] Her remark (影もかたちも見当たらない) is a play on an idiom (影も形もない) which means to dissapear without a trace.
  1057.
1058. [2] Anpan are a type of Japanese sweet roll.
  1059.
1060. [3] She uses the idiom (瓜ニつ, lit. two melons), which is an equivalent to the expression "two peas in a pod".
  1061.
1062. [4] These quotes are rough excerpts from the end of her third (and final) character episode from the original Princess Connect game.
  1063.
  1064. Episode 6: Deduction is a Dance
  1065.
  1066. Kasumi
1067. Hey, Assistant. Sorry for having you go out of your way to come all the way out here.
  1068.
  1069. Kasumi
1070. Please, I'd like for you to help me out with my work again.
  1071.
  1072. Kasumi
1073. This Shadow's mysteries run deep. The investigating is going a lot slower than I thought... It's embarrassing, but I'd like your expertise.
  1074.
  1075. Kasumi
1076. Huhu. Sorry for the poor hospitality.
  1077.
  1078. Kasumi
1079. This is an official government prison overseen by the royal palace. This is a special ward mainly used for political prisoners and felons.
  1080.
  1081. Kasumi
1082. A while ago while I was still working solo, there was a certain incident I resolved...
  1083.
  1084. Kasumi
1085. During that time I built up a relationship with a guard here, so they made an exception and allowed me to borrow a cell.
  1086.
  1087. Kasumi
1088. Using a government facility for private purposes is a bit of a problem. So, I'd like you to keep it a secret from everyone. Confidentiality is one of a detective's ironclad rules, after all.
  1089.
  1090. Kasumi
1091. Anyway. The Shadow we managed to capture the other day is imprisoned in this cell.
  1092.
  1093. Kasumi
1094. Thanks for your assistance at that time, Assistant.
  1095.
  1096. Kasumi
1097. The plan somehow going off without a hitch is definitely cause for celebration.
  1098.
  1099. Kasumi
1100. This situation is unheard of. I made meticulous preparations in order to prevent the Shadow's escape.
  1101.
  1102. Kasumi
1103. I asked that aforementioned guard I'm acquaintances with to keep an eye on things and even used magic to place a barrier around the Shadow to prevent its escape.
  1104.
  1105. Kasumi
1106. Of course this being a prison, security is already tight.
  1107.
  1108. Kasumi
1109. However, Shadows are still very enigmatic beings. Who knows if they have some unforeseen method of simply disappearing. This investigation into a Shadow's true form needs to speed up a bit.
  1110.
  1111. Kasumi
1112. I've even asked various specialists and such that I know to assist with the investigation, but...
  1113.
  1114. Kasumi
1115. There still haven't been any results up till now. I'm starting to sweat a little, to be honest.
  1116.
  1117. Kasumi
1118. I always thought once we captured a Shadow, the incident would be as good as solved.
  1119.
  1120. Kasumi
1121. Turns out, what to do going forward is the troubling part.
  1122.
  1123. Kasumi
1124. Well, the more difficult the problem is, the more satisfying it will be to unravel the truth.
  1125.
  1126. Kasumi
1127. Huhu. First, let's check on the Shadow's current condition.
  1128.
  1129. Kasumi
1130. Just thinking about it without inspecting the real thing will, in most cases, not lead to any answers.
  1131.
  1132. Kasumi
1133. Heey. Do you have a sec, Kiiri. You've got someone here that wants to meet you.
  1134.
  1135. Kiiri
  1136. ........
  1137.
  1138. Kasumi
  1139. Yeah. Good morning.
  1140.
  1141. Kasumi
1142. Huhu. She seems to recognize me now that I've spoken to her so many times...
  1143.
  1144. Kasumi
1145. If you call out to her, she seems to have some sort of reaction.
  1146.
  1147. Kasumi
1148. Though it's still not enough to call it communication.
  1149.
  1150. Kasumi
1151. By the way, Kiiri is this girl's name. Not having a name for her is pretty inconvenient.
  1152.
  1153. Kasumi
1154. She took on my appearance, but calling her "Kasumi Number 2" or "Kasumi Shadow" feels a little weird.
  1155.
  1156. Kasumi
1157. Within the meaningless phrases she repeats, I was able to confirm something resembling a name... So for now, I put a spin on that and decided to use it. [1]
  1158.
  1159. Kasumi
1160. Yes. Kiiri-chan... I'd like for you to call her that as well, Assistant.
  1161.
  1162. Kasumi
1163. Treat her with kindness and civility whenever possible.
  1164.
  1165. Kasumi
1166. Shadows don't seen to have any self-awareness... so even if you treat them roughly they will neither complain nor sour in mood.
  1167.
  1168. Kasumi
1169. But in the end she still looks exactly like me, so being forceful is hard for me to take.
  1170.
  1171. Kasumi
1172. Even just seeing her locked up in there makes me break out into a strange sweat.
  1173.
  1174. Kiiri
  1175. "Good morning, Senpai"
  1176.
  1177. Kiiri
1178. "Thank you for your concern" "I am okay" "You're a kind person aren't you, Senpai" [2]
  1179.
  1180. Kasumi
1181. ....? Eh? It just started blabbering all of a sudden. I wonder why?
  1182.
  1183. Kasumi
1184. The timing points to it being because of you, but the reason is unclear...
  1185.
  1186. Kasumi
1187. Well, anyway. Try speaking with her a bit more, Assistant.
  1188.
  1189. Yuuki
1190. 1. Gently speak to her.
  1191. 2. Shout at her.
  1192.
  1193. Option 1:
  1194.
  1195. Kiiri
1196. "Ehehe♪" "Senpai says some interesting things" "Let's talk some more"
  1197.
  1198. Kasumi
1199. Whoa, wasn't that a response? No, maybe those random remarks just so happened to string together into something coherent?
  1200.
  1201. Kasumi
1202. Even besides that, Kiiri reacted right away to your words, Assistant.
  1203.
  1204. Kasumi
1205. The reason is still unclear, but this is a big discovery!
  1206.
  1207. Kasumi
1208. I feel like the chances for progress with this Shadow investigation just shot up.
  1209.
  1210. Choice 2:
  1211.
  1212. Kasumi
1213. Hyaaa!? This wasn’t meant to be a cue for you to suddenly raise your voice like that, Assistant?
  1214.
  1215. Kiiri
  1216. .......
  1217.
  1218. Kasumi
1219. Ah, see! Kiiri got flustered too and backed up all the way against the wall!
  1220.
  1221. Kasumi
1222. ...wait, flustered? That's a curious topic as well.
  1223.
  1224. Kasumi
1225. Shadows have typically never demonstrated behavior so similar to living beings before.
  1226.
  1227. Kasumi
1228. It's been established that Shadows are not living creatures. They lack both self preservation instincts and crisis avoidance instincts.
  1229.
  1230. Kasumi
1231. Even when cut with a sword, they just calmly go on with whatever they were doing.
  1232.
  1233. Kasumi
1234. That was the theory, but... Kiiri felt fear toward the loud voice.
  1235.
  1236. Kasumi
1237. Wait, is it possible that it only appeared that way? Let's try experimenting some more.
  1238.
  1239. Kasumi
1240. Kiiri, Kiiri... Good girl, come over here.
  1241.
  1242. Kiiri
  1243. ........
  1244.
  1245. Kasumi
1246. Hmm. she doesn't really listen to what I say. Assistant, I'd like you to try calling her over.
  1247.
  1248. Kiiri
1249. "Did you have a task for me, Senpai?" "Preferably something I'm capable of doing"
  1250.
  1251. Kasumi
1252. Wow, she just came over here like normal. Why does she properly listen to what you say, Assistant...?
  1253.
  1254. Kasumi
1255. The reason she calls you "Senpai" is also a mystery.
  1256.
  1257. Kasumi
1258. But anyway, we managed to get a new reaction from Kiiri. This is definitely progress.
  1259.
  1260. Kasumi
1261. With this pace, let's keep on clearing up facts about these Shadows.
  1262.
  1263. Kasumi
1264. Investigate, analyze, deduct, demonstrate. Only through repeating these steps will we arrive at the truth.
  1265.
  1266. Kasumi
1267. I'm counting on you, Assistant. Together, let's dispel this mystery!
  1268.
1269. [1] The name Kiiri is both a play on the word 霧 (kiri, lit. fog/mist) and is also a reference to her real world surname 霧原 (Kirihara).
  1270.
1271. [2] A couple of these lines resemble things she has said the original Princess Connect, but for the most part Kiiri's responses from here on out are not direct callbacks.
  1272.
1273. Episode 7: The Two Mirror Copies
  1274.
  1275. Kasumi
1276. How are you holding up, Assistant?
  1277.
  1278. Kasumi
1279. I'm really sorry—having you watch over Kiiri so often...
  1280.
  1281. Kasumi
1282. Now that the Shadow investigation has finally produced some results, various research labs and magicians have expressed interest.
  1283.
  1284. Kasumi
1285. Preparing official documents for the royal palace and being in constant correspondence is all a huge hassle.
  1286.
  1287. Kasumi
1288. Having to constantly judge people's intentions and watch out for deception tires me out. Aah, I'm exhausted.
  1289.
  1290. Kiiri
  1291. "Great Detective!"
  1292.
  1293. Kasumi
1294. Wh-Wha.... Look here, suddenly clinging on to me is troubling.
  1295.
  1296. Kasumi
1297. You and I have possess a nearly identical mass. Which means our body weight is also the same. If you jump onto me with that much force I'll fall over.
  1298.
  1299. Kiiri
  1300. "A difficult problem, isn't it?"
  1301.
  1302. Kasumi
1303. That it is... Hmm, I feel as though communication has really been established.
  1304.
  1305. Kasumi
1306. This is thanks to you, Assistant. Though conversation with you, her condition has clearly changed.
  1307.
  1308. Kasumi
1309. It's become clear that a sense of self and something like spontaneity has begun to sprout within her.
  1310.
  1311. Kasumi
1312. The strange part is, the reason is still unknown. I've made a deduction, but whether or not it holds up is unclear.
  1313.
  1314. Kasumi
1315. The research on Shadows hadn't progressed that far, so everything just feels like fumbling around at the moment.
  1316.
  1317. Kiiri
  1318. "A difficult case, isn't it?"
  1319.
  1320. Kasumi
1321. That it is... Hmmm, I just can't get used to being spoken to by someone with the same face and voice.
  1322.
  1323. Kasumi
1324. Of course the disassociation is a problem, but there's also an uneasiness that arises from having to face myself.
  1325.
  1326. Kasumi
1327. Staring continuously into a mirror at my own insecure self would inevitably lead to some discomfort.
  1328.
  1329. Yuuki
1330. 1. But you always seem so full of confidence.
1331. 2. Do you dislike Kiiri?
  1332.
  1333. Option 1:
  1334.
  1335. Kasumi
1336. That's just the front I put on. I'm anxious all the time. And I waver whenever I'm unsure of that to do, or from an inferiority complex.
  1337.
  1338. Kasumi
1339. I'm still a teenage girl in the middle of puberty, you know?
  1340.
  1341. Kasumi
1342. Since the time I was working solo, I've had to bluff so those around me wouldn't take me lightly.
  1343.
  1344. Kasumi
1345. This "Great Detective" posturing is just to protect my weak, fragile self.
  1346.
  1347. Kasumi
1348. However she... Kiiri exposes the self that I hid deep beneath that act.
  1349.
  1350. Kasumi
1351. It seems the mood has taken a turn where I'm just laying bare my complexes.
  1352.
  1353. Option 2:
  1354.
  1355. Kasumi
1356. It's not a matter of whether I like her or not, Assitant.
  1357.
  1358. Kasumi
1359. But about that. Between like and dislike, it's definitely like. Everyone has to have love for themselves, after all.
  1360.
  1361. Kasumi
1362. We all express fondness for things that take after us or that we share commonalities with. That's a basic human instinct we all need.
  1363.
  1364. Kasumi
1365. If we didn't have love for ourselves, we wouldn't even be able to breathe.
  1366.
  1367. End of branches
  1368.
  1369. Kasumi
1370. With all that being said, Kiiri is in large part a match with myself.
  1371.
  1372. Kasumi
1373. She is me. However, she's more of a constructed, idealized version of who I am at heart.
  1374.
  1375. Kasumi
  1376. A facade dressed up by a so-called self-esteem stylist.
  1377.
  1378. Kasumi
1379. But still. Kiiri is an outer representation of my "inner self".
  1380.
  1381. Kasumi
1382. The voice that plays back like a recording makes me feel discomfort. Just looking at her and seeing insignificant differences between us makes me unbearably conscious about them.
  1383.
  1384. Kasumi
1385. Aah, was I always such a... frail and pitiable girl?
  1386.
  1387. Kiiri
  1388. "Great Detective?"
  1389.
  1390. Kasumi
1391. I wonder why she calls me that… hnng, just being in this place makes me unable to think clearly.
  1392.
  1393. Kasumi
1394. But, just abandoning one's self is something most people can't do.
  1395.
  1396. Kasumi
1397. I'll properly help and protect you okay... Kiiri?
  1398.
  1399. Kiiri
  1400. "Thank you very much♪"
  1401.
  1402. Kasumi
1403. Yep... Just treating her with a bit of kindness and approval is all it takes to get her to become attached.
  1404.
  1405. Kasumi
1406. Once again, that's just like me.
  1407.
  1408. Kasumi
1409. Huh? What's up, Assistant? It looks like you have something you want to say.
  1410.
  1411. Kasumi
1412. Huhu. Kiiri and I act nothing alike? Well, that's because this is a character I’ve made up...
  1413.
  1414. Kasumi
1415. An act that mimics the exemplary Great Detectives I've idealized since my childhood.
  1416.
  1417. Kasumi
1418. Of course, that is also me. The me that is faint and frail just like Kiiri, is also me. Neither part of me can just be cut off and tossed aside.
  1419.
  1420. Kasumi
1421. Huhu. It's turned into some sort of philosophical discussion all of a sudden.
  1422.
  1423. Kiiri
  1424. "I am..."
  1425.
  1426. Kasumi
  1427. n? What's that, Kiiri?
  1428.
  1429. Kiiri
  1430. "I can, become a Great Detective?"
  1431.
  1432. Kasumi
1433. Of course you can. A beacon of light to aid the lost and bewildered; a cool, intelligent Great Detective is what you'll definitely become.
  1434.
  1435. Kasumi
1436. What you've yearned for since childhood, to become like a protagonist in a story... a noble existence.
  1437.
  1438. Kasumi
1439. The me you see before you is evidence of that. If that isn't proof enough for you, then I'll give a speech as many times as it takes to convince you.
  1440.
  1441. Episode 8: Another Me
  1442.
  1443. Kasumi
1444. Assistant! Sorry for calling you here in the middle of the night, but we've got an emergency situation!
  1445.
  1446. Kasumi
1447. My apologies, but I'm also confused about it so I can't really explain clearly...
  1448.
  1449. Kasumi
1450. Anyway, seeing is believing, so I'd like for you to confirm Kiiri's current condition. [1]
  1451.
  1452. Kasumi
1453. Yeah, there's something strange about her.
  1454.
  1455. Kasumi
1456. In the midst of us communicating more and more, she seemed well so I let my guard down.
  1457.
  1458. Kasumi
1459. She's a Shadow. An unidentified, ephemeral being... A vague thing whose physiology and disposition are still in the process of being researched.
  1460.
  1461. Kasumi
1462. I forgot about all that. This was my blunder.
  1463.
  1464. Kasumi
1465. I'm unfit to be a Great Detective. This was a situation that should have come up in my hypotheses, and yet...
  1466.
  1467. Kiiri
  1468. ….......
  1469.
  1470. Kasumi
1471. Kiiri! Are you okay, can you understand me?
  1472.
  1473. Kiiri
  1474. "Gr...De..ive"
  1475.
  1476. Kasumi
1477. There's some noise mixed in with her voice, or rather it's become difficult to comprehend her.
  1478.
  1479. Kasumi
1480. And look here, Assistant. Isn't her form starting to become transparent?
  1481.
  1482. Kasumi
1483. Her outline is wavering and her shape is starting to blur. Her mass has been decreasing as if she's about to vanish. Like a dream, or an illusion.
  1484.
  1485. Kasumi
1486. However, I'd like to avoid that situation. The research on Shadows still needs to continue and, personally, I've grown quite fond of Kiiri.
  1487.
  1488. Kasumi
1489. I refuse to part ways here.
  1490.
  1491. Kasumi
  1492. That's why, Assistant, I have a request.
  1493.
  1494. Kasumi
1495. I'd like you to strengthen Kiiri with your strange power.
  1496.
  1497. Kasumi
1498. That mysterious power used to power up others, please use it.
  1499.
  1500. Kasumi
1501. Only you possess that inherent power to bring about miraculous phenomena... I've only got you to rely on, Assistant.
  1502.
  1503. Kasumi
1504. This is my deduction, whose truth is backed by statistics. In the first place Shadows are unstable. I believe they are not beings who are able to persist for long periods of time.
  1505.
  1506. Kasumi
1507. That is why sightings seem to be so rare-- Shadows disappear immediately.
  1508.
  1509. Kasumi
1510. As such, once the sun shines on them they are erased, just like shadows.
  1511.
  1512. Kasumi
1513. So the reason a Shadow such as Kiiri would be able to persist for an exceptionally long time... is most likely because of your strange power.
  1514.
  1515. Kasumi
1516. You strengthened Kiiri's very existence up using that power.
  1517.
  1518. Kasumi
1519. That's why she was able to persist in this world for so long and stay alongside us. It was certainly, undoubtedly a miracle.
  1520.
  1521. Kasumi
1522. If you think about it like that, it all lines up. Or it could just simply be my wishful thinking...
  1523.
  1524. Kasumi
1525. From meeting you, coming into contact with you, and befriending you, she was unconsciously influenced by you. She received those power's blessings.
  1526.
  1527. Kasumi
1528. That's why as a Shadow she lived...aah, let me use some different phrasing...for an extended time, existed in this world.
  1529.
  1530. Kasumi
1531. So from that line of thinking, I can only hope and entrust you with my wish.
  1532.
  1533. Kasumi
1534. This is a request. Please, Assistant, save her... save Kiiri!
  1535.
  1536. Kasumi
1537. Uu... This light again? Just what is this?
  1538.
  1539. Kasumi
1540. This might sound a bit sarcastic, but I sure get my fill of difficult cases when I'm with you.
  1541.
  1542. Kasumi
1543. With such mysterious happenings being so constant, a Great Detective gets no time to rest.
  1544.
  1545. Dream begins
  1546.
  1547. Kasumi
  1548. Senpai, Senpai! Over here..!
  1549.
  1550. Kasumi
1551. Ehehe. sorry for calling you out here so suddenly.
  1552.
  1553. Kasumi
1554. Being you, Senpai, wouldn't you have other matters to attend to?
  1555.
  1556. Kasumi
1557. Eh? You didn't really have much else to do? You have too much free time?
  1558.
  1559. Kasumi
1560. Huhu... Just like me, Senpai is living quite the gray youth.
  1561.
  1562. Kasumi
1563. You'd want to go out after school with friends and eat sweets or play at the arcade, after all. I get it.
  1564.
  1565. Kasumi
1566. But other than Senpai, I don't have any other close friends...
  1567.
  1568. Kasumi
1569. Even if I have an interesting discovery, I have nobody to share it with.
  1570.
  1571. Kasumi
1572. That is, certainly, a bit sad.
  1573.
  1574. Kasumi
1575. Ehehe. Leaving that aside, I made a big discovery today.
  1576.
  1577. Kasumi
1578. I wanted to tell Senpai about it, which is why I called you out here. That it wasn't a bother to you, I'm glad.
  1579.
  1580. Kasumi
1581. Huhun. Look here, Senpai. This girl here, do you remember her?
  1582.
  1583. Kiiri
  1584. Meow~...♪
  1585.
  1586. Kasumi
1587. W-Wha? Kiiri, don't just suddenly jump onto Senpai like that... you'll get hair all over his uniform.
  1588.
  1589. Kasumi
1590. Huhu. As usual she really loves Senpai, that Kiiri.
  1591.
  1592. Kasumi
1593. ...Huh? Wait, did you forget Senpai? The other day, there was a certain incident that we resolved, right?
  1594.
  1595. Kasumi
1596. The incident where, in the school's nursery, the flowerpots were being ruined...
  1597.
  1598. Kasumi
1599. Like a Great Detective we investigated and caught the culprit that ended up being a cat.
  1600.
  1601. Kasumi
1602. It was a shame the incident's outcome wasn't remotely dramatic.
  1603.
  1604. Kasumi
1605. They said that the cat culprit would be a bother to people, so they wanted to take it to a health ministry to be euthanized.
  1606.
  1607. Kasumi
1608. We were worried, so we took her in. Having her be euthanized is just sad, after all...
  1609.
  1610. Kasumi
1611. And that was, this girl. You forgot all this, Senpai?
  1612.
  1613. Yuuki
1614. 1. Sorry, I have no memory of this.
1615. 2. ....this cat is Kiiri?
  1616.
  1617. Option 1:
  1618.
  1619. Kasumi
1620. Jeez. You're still young and yet you're already suffering from memory loss?
  1621.
  1622. Kasumi
1623. If you don't properly work your brain tissue, it'll just keep becoming weaker. Let's make sure to temper your memory and deductive skills the next time we're resolving an incident, okay?
  1624.
  1625. Option 2:
  1626.
  1627. Kasumi
1628. Yes. It seems that she was an abandoned stray.
  1629.
  1630. Kasumi
1631. The name Kiiri was written on the collar around her neck.
  1632.
  1633. Kasumi
1634. Huh? I was so sure that was why, but there's nothing like a name written on her collar...
  1635.
  1636. Kasumi
  1637. That's strange. Did I just misremember?
  1638.
  1639. Kasumi
1640. But, her name is Kiiri. I definitely remember at least that much.
  1641.
  1642. End of branches
  1643.
  1644. Kasumi
1645. Anyway. Senpai, I'm made a big discovery.
  1646.
  1647. Kasumi
1648. This girl, Kiiri, is pretty clever... using a mimi, she can perform simple communication with us.
  1649.
  1650. Kasumi
1651. This is that toy that was popular a while ago that claimed to "Let you have a conversation with a dog or cat".
  1652.
  1653. Kasumi
1654. When I let her operate the mimi, she was able to properly establish communication.
  1655.
  1656. Kasumi
1657. Yes. Senpai's acquaintance, Rima, was it....
  1658.
  1659. Kasumi
1660. She's also just an animal, but she can communicate normally using a mimi. It's just like that. Amazing, right?
  1661.
  1662. Kasumi
1663. If she gets sleepy, she says "Sleepy". If she gets hungry, she says "I want to eat food".
  1664.
  1665. Kasumi
1666. It's true. Let me demonstrate for you.
  1667.
  1668. Kasumi
1669. Watch carefully Senpai... Kiiri, give Senpai a proper greeting.
  1670.
  1671. Kiiri
  1672. "Good afternoon"
  1673.
  1674. Kiiri
1675. "It was an honor" "I was glad to have been able to live" "I didn't want to disappear"
  1676.
  1677. Kiiri
1678. "I loved both of you" "That's why I didn't want to say farewell"
  1679.
  1680. Kasumi
1681. Huh? She's saying some pretty weird things...
  1682.
  1683. Kasumi
1684. That's strange, it became very conversational just now.
  1685.
  1686. Kasumi
1687. Uun. Was it just a coincidence that it resembled a conversation?
  1688.
  1689. Kasumi
1690. If you give a monkey a typewriter, they will eventually produce something akin to Shakespeare... is something I've seen come up in writing before.
  1691.
  1692. Kasumi
1693. And I've heard some stories of such things happening.
  1694.
  1695. Kasumi
1696. What a shame... Even though I thought it was a great discovery, was it just a misunderstanding by me?
  1697.
  1698. Kiiri
  1699. "Great Detective"
  1700.
  1701. Kasumi
1702. n? What is it, Kiiri... Wawa, licking my cheeks is off limits.
  1703.
  1704. Kiiri
1705. "Thank you" "For thinking that our parting is saddening" "For loving me, thank you"
  1706.
  1707. Kiiri
1708. "For wishing for my continued existence, thank you"
  1709.
  1710. Kasumi
1711. n, nn? Kiiri's voice, she recorded my voice and played it back...
  1712.
  1713. Kasumi
1714. It's as if I'm speaking to myself, what a strange feeling. The meaning behind the things she's saying are unclear, too...
  1715.
  1716. Kasumi
1717. Well, that's fine. As long as Kiiri is healthy and living. I was able to save this girl who was about to be disposed of.
  1718.
  1719. Kasumi
1720. This is that feeling of affirmation you get from being a Great Detective... Senpai♪
  1721.
  1722. End of dream
  1723.
  1724. Ames
  1725. Alright, good job.
  1726.
  1727. Ames
1728. Let me firstly apologize, Yuuki. I'm not an all-seeing all-knowing god, so there are things even I'm incapable of.
  1729.
  1730. Ames
1731. The Shadow Kiiri that exists Here will shortly cease to exist. There's no escaping that fate.
  1732.
  1733. Ames
1734. By nature these Shadows are merely just bugs formed during the "Reconstruction".
  1735.
  1736. Ames
1737. The fact that they are here is an aberration, which is why this world's self-purification system quickly stamps them out.
  1738.
  1739. Ames
1740. If we were to put it in terms of the human body, these shadows are a foreign body that did not originally exist within it.
  1741.
  1742. Ames
1743. And just like a virus, they are being purged by the immune system.
  1744.
  1745. Ames
1746. ...though being how you are right now, even this explanation might not make sense to you.
  1747.
  1748. Ames
1749. However, with my authority, that sense of self that started to bud within Kiiri... I protected her heart and isolated it somewhere safe.
  1750.
  1751. Ames
1752. Simply put, I've stashed her away on some of my free memory. [2]
  1753.
  1754. Ames
1755. Only while you or Kasumi are dreaming can I retrieve her and allow you to meet.
  1756.
  1757. Ames
1758. She was like a child that you two found, raised, and loved... never being able to meet again for all eternity seems pretty sad don't you think, Yuuki?
  1759.
  1760. Ames
1761. I also share some similarities to Kiiri, since we both spontaneously formed a heart... so I have a bit of empathy for her.
  1762.
  1763. Ames
1764. And it might be pretty obvious, but I think just disappearing like that is sorrowful.
  1765.
  1766. Ames
1767. So that's why I intervened. I don't need any words of thanks.
  1768.
  1769. Ames
1770. Simply put, it was just for my own self-satisfaction. I can't do anything besides this, after all.
  1771.
  1772. Ames
1773. Anyway. Even if you use your Princess Knight power, it would merely be a symptomatic treatment.
  1774.
  1775. Ames
1776. Within a few days, This Kiiri will fade away.
  1777.
  1778. Ames
1779. So remember this. Don't forget her. And at least, give her a proper farewell.
  1780.
  1781. Ames
1782. I was never able to properly smile and tell you "Goodbye"... and I have always regretted it since.
  1783.
  1784. End of Ames conversation
  1785.
  1786. Kasumi
  1787.
  1788. U, n... H-huh?
  1789.
  1790. Kasumi
1791. I was asleep, huh? I feel like I had something like a happy, yet sad, strange dream.
  1792.
  1793. Kasumi
1794. Ah, Assistant is also asleep... Wake up.
  1795.
  1796. Kasumi
1797. If you know anything about that suspicious light earlier, I'd like for you to explain it.
  1798.
  1799. Kiiri
  1800. .......
  1801.
  1802. Kasumi
  1803. Kiiri! A-Are you okay?
  1804.
  1805. Kiiri
  1806. .......
  1807.
  1808. Kasumi
1809. N-no response. She's gradually growing dimmer and her existence is fading away... Are you really disappearing, Kiiri?
  1810.
  1811. Kiiri
  1812. .......
  1813.
  1814. Kasumi
1815. Kiiri? Was that a laugh just now? Why?
  1816.
  1817. Kasumi
1818. Aah, Kiiri... To me, since the day we met, and even right now, you were the embodiment of a mystery.
  1819.
  1820. Kasumi
1821. The one that shared my appearance, my shadow...[3]
  1822.
  1823. Kasumi
1824. Because I admired Great Detectives, I've lived by dressing myself up as one...
  1825.
  1826. Kasumi
1827. But I had no intention of tossing aside the weak and pitiful me.
  1828.
  1829. Kasumi
1830. You were also me. That's why Kiiri... Please, don't disappear.
  1831.
1832. [1] The idiom used here is 百聞は一見に如かず (hyakubun ha ujjen ni shikazu, lit. a hundred hearsays is inferior to one glance).
  1833.
1834. [2] "Memory" in this case refers to digital memory e.g. on a hard disk.
  1835.
1836. [3] The text says 影 (kage lit. shadow), but is read as シャドウ (Shadow).
  1837.
  1838.
  1839. Misc. Translations
  1840.
  1841. Home screen:
  1842.
1843. Taake that! Hehe, looking down on Kaon's Great Detective will land you in trouble♪
  1844.
1845. Resolving incidents as quick the wind; capturing criminals like a lightning strike. Leave it to me, Great Detective Kasumi!
  1846.
1847. I'm not one to enjoy getting rough... but if it's in order to resolve the incident I have no intention of staying quiet!
  1848.
1849. Our relationship may be that of a detective and assistant right now, but if we leave that aside to me you're still a precious partner♪
  1850.
1851. With you here perfectly following me up, I can go all out! Without a doubt, a Great Assistant to a Great Detective!
  1852.
  1853. Union Burst:
  1854.
1855. Leave it to me! Criminal Prison!
  1856.
  1857. Guild House: 2RNG4me
  1858.
  1859. Bond Level Ups
  1860.
1861. Recruit: You need to borrow a detective's power, huh? Feel free to rely on me* from now on.
1862. *She uses the idiom 大船に乗る (oobune ni noru, lit. ride a large boat) which means to gain a large foundation to rely on.
  1863.
1864. 1: Up until now I've worked alone... but I'm happy about getting a reliable partner. Looking forward to working with you, Assistant!
  1865.
1866. 2: The basis of any deduction is, of course, observation. Observing the target's every action... the thrill of being a detective. You'll definitely come see it that way as well, Assistant!
  1867.
1868. 3: Having to travel from place to place gathering information was honestly pretty bone-breaking... But since you were there, Assistant, it felt like a fun little excursion.
  1869.
1870. It seems you and I are pretty compatible. Would it be possible... for me to continue borrowing your strength from now on?
  1871.
1872. If I'm with you, Assistant, it feels as if I could solve any mystery... It's a bit embarrasing, but those are my honest, true feelings, you know♪
  1873.
1874. 4: The search for the mysterious beings, Shadows. If we can cement this, the first incident I've solved with Assistant will be born...Huhu, of course I'm looking forward to this♪
  1875.
1876. 5: Your special ability sure is mysterious. In the moment you powered me up, it almost felt as if we were one... oops, ahahaha I went and said something embarrasing.
  1877.
1878. 6: You sure do get along well with that girl, Assistant-kun. It's not that I'm jealous... okay maybe just a little. I mean, you've known me for a much longer time, haven't you!?
  1879.
1880. 7: That girl's existence can be thought of as another me, so to speak... Ah, no! That was nothing right now Assistant, please forget it!
  1881.
1882. What the heck am I blurting out. That girl clearly harbors affection for Assistant... Wouldn't that make it seem as if I had just indirectly confessed to him!?
  1883.
1884. n? You completely forgot? T-that's going a little too far! To me you're... Uh, wait it was nothing... Uuu, I'm grabbing a coffee~!
