Kasumi Story Translation

Her story is unique in that it takes place sometime between the events of Chapter 3 and 4 of the main story rather than as a prelude, so there are minor references to events that occur.

Episode 1: Now Recruiting: Detective's Assistant

Kasumi
Haa... The investigation on Shadows isn't proceeding one biiit.

Kasumi
And the amount of victims just keeps steadily increasing. I even got fired up since I hadn't received such a detective-esque request in a while... Maybe my intuition has gotten dull.

Kasumi
Or maybe those Shadows are just even more mysterious beings than I thought?

Kasumi
Oh no~ Scary~ I'm kind of averse to such a horror-ish premise.

Kasumi
Well whatever. At this rate I'll just be a freeloading deadbeat.

Kasumi
I need to put in my best for the folks I've been relying on at Kaon, too.

Kasumi
I've gotta do my best to resolve this incident. First things first, the witness testimonies.

Kasumi
Eyewitnesses to the Shadows have often been left confused. My speaking skills are definitely not my strong point, so getting information out of them might be a problem.

Kasumi

I'm Kaon's Kasumi. Before this I worked solo, but due to various reasons I've been taken up here for the time being.

My previous job was as a detective going around solving incidents in town. In both my current and past job, I've stuck to the mental work rather than combat.

Kasumi
I'm usually out in the field doing research so the chance to properly meet you has never really presented itself. Well, pleased to make your acquaintance.

Hmm? Hmm... That flier you've got there. It seems familiar.

Kasumi
Ah... That's right, these were the recruitment fliers for a detective's assistant I put up around town back when I was working solo.

Pretty nostalgic thing for you to bring in.

Kasumi
There was a time where I hit my limit doing things alone, so I decided to try looking for an assistant.

Thought now that I'm with Kaon, I'm not actually looking to recruit one anymore.

Kasumi
O-oh, you seem pretty disappointed...

I see, you're looking for a part time job right now, eh? So you saw this flier and thought you should try getting that detective's assistant job?

Kasumi
And so you asked around for where I was, which brought you here to Kaon. I see, it's all connected now.

What should I do... The Shadow investigation is starting to hit a dead end...

The others in Kaon have their own jobs to take care of too... So I actually have just considered getting an assistant.

Well, Yuuki doesn't seem to be a bad person. Guess I'll give them a chance.

Well aren't you the lucky one. I was actually just thinking about hiring an assistant again.

Being a rookie here at Kaon means my salary is on the lower end, so your pay won't be the greatest.

From every angle, a cute detective girl... No, a magnificent Great Detective♪

My daily lifestyle's been thrown off lately, so I was worried my skin had gotten a bit rough.

After trying the lotion I borrowed from Maho, it's back to being smooth and healthy.

Kasumi
Huhu. Last night, Yuuki... Assistant and I ended up having to call it off after the explanation of the job's details.

Kasumi
From today forward, once again the Shadow incident investigation resumes!

Kasumi
Uu~. After Assistant left yesterday, I realized just how unkempt my bedhead was. How embarrassing.

Even though I just read in a book that "First impressions are the most important part of a relationship" the other day...

But! It's not too late, I can still put on a cool demeanor.

I'd hate if Assistant thought of me as an incompetent detective, so I've got to try my best.

Part of the blade that broke off wounded your arm, and so treating that ate up a lot of your time...?

Okay, let's see that arm.

Kasumi
There definitely is a fresh wound here... so you don’t seem to be lying.

Kasumi
Well, I'm at least relieved that it wasn't a murder case.

Kasumi
Huh? Can I deduce how it happened?

Who do you think I am. I'm the great detective Kaon boasts about, you know?

But, asking the detective for everything is against the rules. First, think about it yourself. I want to hear what your deduction is... Assistant♪

You gave up way too soon... Try giving it a bit more thought.

Kasumi
What we all possess is intelligence! It's a waste if we don't utilize it effectively, don't you think?

Yep. That conclusion is definitely the most noble, since it doesn't make you feel bad for accusing anyone of being a bad person.

Kasumi
Though thinking this incident was a mere accident seems a little unnatural.

Kasumi
Well if that's the explanation you've come up with, it doesn't matter if it's correct or not.

Kasumi
A detective is one who's job is to pull together an explanation that anyone can agree with.

Kasumi

Hm. This morning, it was your housemate, this Kokkoro, who was in charge of cooking, eh?

Kasumi
W-Wha..? Kokkoro was definitely not the culprit?

Yes. You used that aforementioned suspicious power to strengthen Kokkoro.

It was probably involuntary. You probably thought to yourself "Do your best with cooking~♪" or some such.

And through use of that power, Kokkoro’s physical strength rose.

Kokkoro probably went about cooking as usual.

Kasumi
But, since her physical strength had grown, the knife she was using couldn't take it and shattered.

Kasumi
And that's the truth of the matter.

Of course, I didn't conduct an on-site investigation and such, so we can't confirm whether or not this deduction was correct.

Kasumi
If one thing can be said from this, is that your strange power doesn't solely have merits.

Kasumi
It's a convenient, miracle-like power, but you need to be wary of how you use it.

Episode 3: Shadow Capturing Investigation

Kasumi
Huhu. And thus, the investigation begins, Assistant.

Yes, our investigation shall focus on the recent mysterious phenomenon plaguing the town, the so called Shadows.

Kasumi
It's a request from your benefactors the Sarendia Orphanage, you know?

Kasumi
"The children are afraid, so if possible I'd like you to solve this incident. Or at the very least, determine the cause of this phenomenon", they said.

Kasumi
Protecting the children's smiles—quite the job worth doing.

Kasumi
Though, regrettably... I currently understand very little about why these Shadows are appearing.

Kasumi
Even though in the time since, I'd worn my soles out from investigating every day.

Kasumi
There's never been a similar case in the past, either. Truly, an unprecedented mysterious incident.

Kasumi
I'll give you an overview of what I know.

Kasumi
Sightings of these strange beings, these Shadows, have recently been occurring solely in this town— Landsol. Whether or not we can assume that they are a species of monster is unclear.

Kasumi
They mainly appear at night, so treating them as ghosts seems to be the best way to catch a sighting.

Kasumi
Engaging them in combat seems to be an option for the brave, but there doesn't seem to be any other way to deal with them. Just as their name suggests, they are quite the shadowy beings.

Kasumi
Also, there are many cases of Shadows taking on the forms of witnesses' acquaintances.

Kasumi
At a glance they are indistinguishable; an exact copy of their outer appearance.

Kasumi
Their eyes glow with a strange light and their bodies are surrounded by a dark mist... Though their outlines seem to be indistinct at times.

Kasumi
They also seem to repeat the same actions without fail and repeat the same cryptic lines over and over.

Kasumi
The consensus is that they are beings without intelligence and incapable of thought.

Kasumi
If they were just that, frankly, they'd be harmless.

Kasumi
Their creepiness aside... There have been instances of Shadows harming humans, so they can't simply be left alone.

Kasumi
Hmm. You were also a witness. And at that time, you even fought with them, or so I've heard.

Kasumi
That prior experience... is one of the reasons I chose you to be my assistant.

I've only glanced at Shadows from afar, so I haven't been able to discern much about them.

A strange feeling of dread that eats away at your core.

This disturbance of people's hearts is what causes the fear. There's a chance that they emit some sort of special magic, as well.

Since they don't really have any will, they typically just move without purpose.

Attacks by Shadows like you experienced are the few exceptions.

The reason they do attack humans is unknown, but the chance of a repeat case is high, I believe.

The chance of you being targeted by a Shadow... I'm kind of looking forward to it.

I've yet to deal with them in person, after all. I can come up with all kinds of theories in my head, but in the end they're all just armchair theories.

With all being that said... I'd like to defeat a Shadow and capture it, if possible.

Shadows usually just vanish into mist after taking damage... so it might be a bit difficult.

I've prepared a special magic-infused bottle. With this, I'd like to draw a Shadow in and seal it.

Episode 4: The Underclassman Detective Girl

It wasn't even much of a deduction. I just gathered statistics about where Shadows were seen and their behavioral patterns.

Kasumi
And with that, I made a Shadow distribution map of those locations and was able to determine a focal point.

Kasumi
That is to say, the places Shadows appear... is what I was able to estimate.

Kasumi
It was rough, you know. I had to be direct about it and just plot points on a map...

Kasumi
Then I had to walk to the actual locations, then fill up any discrepancies between fact and fiction.

Kasumi
Though I'm pretty good at it and I love that sort of thing, so it wasn't too much of a pain.

Kasumi
A lot of time sure has passed. I'm sorry for having you tag along, Assistant.

Kasumi
Things like helping me get testimonies, organizing documents, grabbing food... I relied on you a lot, huh.

You can say you were just doing your job, but I'm still very grateful.

Even within just the town, there seem to be around ten locations. That's why even if the locations have been determined, statistically this still has me a bit worried.

For now we'll focus on the place which seems to be the biggest hot spot of Shadows among them. We'll perform our stakeout around there.

Just as planned, if a Shadow appears, we capture it. Once we capture the real thing, through research and observation, we may be able to determine the truth about these Shadows.

I've deducted that a Shadow should appear here within a few days. There's nothing to do from here on out besides wait patiently, so if you've got other matters to attend do, it's fine for you to leave for a bit.

I'm really sorry about the all-night stakeout. My financial situation is also a bit strained, so I can't even afford to pay you for overtime.

Even though we're wrapped up in the middle of an unprecedented incident... He just sleeps there so peacefully.

[1] 袋とじ (fukurotoji) is a particular binding technique found in Japan and a few other Asian countires. Look it up yourself if you want a visual clarification.

[2] She's referring to bugs in the programming sense, not insects.

[3] The phrase 触らぬ神に祟りなし (sawarunu kami ni tatarinashi) is a Japanese idiom. The English equivalent would be to "let sleeping dogs lie".
