- Chapter 26. A Kiss For A Sneeze
- Yang had just been enjoying her Saturday afternoon in her room, lounging on her bed with her ear buds in, skimming through some of her favorite fashion and workout magazines when a knock came on her door.
- With a small sigh, she pulled the ear buds out and straightened up to face her visitor.
- "Come in."
- The door was pushed ajar as Ruby stepped in, head bowed and eyes watering. Zwei was in her arms, his ears and tails drooping.
- Yang couldn't tell which of them was whimpering more. She sighed again.
- "What happened?"
- Ruby shuffled in, trying to keep her lower lip from trembling.
- "I th-think he ate something weird..."
- Yang groaned.
- "Really, Zwei? Again?"
- The corgi gave a little yip, but a rumble shot up his belly and it was followed by an awkward burp. Ruby cooed and reached around to rub his tummy for him while she peered pleadingly up at her sister.
- "Yaaang-"
- "Really? Mom or Dad can't take him?"
- "Yang, your girlfriend's a vet," Ruby reminded her. "Don't you wanna go see Blake?"
- "Well, 'course I do. It's just, you know she's-"
- "I knoooww!" Ruby wailed. "But I'm just worried Zwei might get sick! Please Yang, pleeeeease!" She scuttled up to the side of the bed and begged louder.
- Her older sister had no choice.
- "Alright, fine. Get him in his crate. You comin' with me?"
- "Ahhh I can't! Weiss and I are doing a project and I didn't get my part started yet and if I don't have it done she'll kill me-"
- "I got it, I got it." Yang closed her magazines and put everything aside as she hopped off the bed. She reached out and pet Zwei on the head. "Okay, bud, looks like it's just you and me today."
- The dog gave another little bark, but it seemed tired. Ruby whimpered again, causing Yang to pet her head next.
- "Don't worry. He'll be fine."
- Ruby sniffled, but nodded.
- "Thanks, Yang."
- "No prob." Yang pulled her into a brief hug before patting her sister's back. "Alright, load him up!"
- Ruby retrieved Zwei's little crate and pushed him inside, apologizing as she locked the door from the outside. Yang got her car started as Ruby put the crate in the back on the floor, making sure it wouldn't slide.
- A few minutes later, Yang was off and driving, bound for the local veterinary hospital.
- It wasn't far, and she pulled into the parking lot before the second radio song had ended. She got out, unloaded Zwei, then headed for the entrance of the small building.
- A sign with a painted dog, cat, rabbit, and bird greeted her at the door as she pushed in.
- There were only a few other patients in the lobby today, one other dog and a pair of bunnies in a cage.
- Yang went to the front desk and checked Zwei in, making a special request at the counter.
- "Could I see Miss Belladonna if it's possible?"
- The man behind the desk adjusted his glasses.
- "For a dog? ...Well, she's got no other patients today so I don't see why not. I'll write you in."
- "Thanks a ton!"
- With that, Yang took Zwei's crate over to the waiting area and placed it on the floor. She took a seat on one of the little couches there and pulled out her phone to message Ruby and let her sister know she'd made it to the vet.
- Surprisingly, it was only a few minutes later when the clerk called her name. Yang hopped to her feet and picked up Zwei's crate.
- "Alright, here we go."
- She braced herself a little bit, because she knew Blake wouldn't be expecting her. Or Zwei. Especially Zwei.
- Yang knew the way to her girlfriend's office, and although the door was slightly ajar, she knocked anyway.
- Blake was inside, hunched over a table where she was sifting through papers, likely belonging to different patients of hers. She wore her usual working outfit, which consisted of a simple, formal blue shirt and white pants. Her jet-black hair was tied back into a ponytail so it wouldn't interfere with her work, and the usual bow bounced a little on top of her head.
- As soon as she heard the knock, she perked up and turned around to face her next customer.
- "Good morning. How- Yang?"
- "Surprise!" The blonde sauntered in, wearing a sheepish smile.
- Blake was more delighted than confused to see her right now, and she couldn't stop herself from hurrying forward to press a quick kiss to her girlfriend's cheek.
- "You came to visit me again?" she guessed. "Well, if you're going to whisk me away for another lunch date, you're going to have to wait another half hour."
- "Ahh, as nice as that sounds, I've actually got a patient for you today." Yang flashed her gaze down to the crate in her hand.
- Blake's eyes followed, then widened as she took a step back.
- "Yang! You brought Zwei? To me? You know I'm a- … a cat specialist..."
- Yang rolled her eyes. It was true that Blake only ever saw feline patients, and she truly was best with them. After all, her work room was covered in posters with cute kittens on them, amongst charts of feline anatomy.
- But in reality, the main reason Blake was best with cats was because-
- "You know I'm allergic to dogs!" Blake hissed.
- "I know that!" Yang whispered back. "But there's no way I coulda refused Ruby! And the little guy really does seem sick. Plus, the guy at the desk said it was alright. Your allergies aren't life-threatening, right? I've been dating you long enough to know that."
- Her girlfriend glared at her for a moment before heaving a sigh.
- "Fine. I'll take him."
- "Aw, Blake, you're the best!"
- Yang swung her free arm around her girlfriend's shoulders and kissed her full on the lips.
- It would've been a lot nicer if Blake hadn't been assaulted by her allergies right that very second. She did her best to pull away before she could end up sneezing directly into Yang's mouth.
- But she did manage to bite her a little bit – probably by accident – and she felt that sufficed as punishment for Yang bringing her a dog of all things.
- Yang brought her fingers to her lower lip and rubbed a little.
- "Ow, yeesh. Kitty's got fangs!"
- "Yang-"
- "Sorry, sorry. He's all yours." She lifted Zwei's crate and placed it on the cushioned table, then spun on her heel and headed for the door.
- "Um, where do you think you're going?" Blake snorted. "You're not just going to dr- achoo! ...ugh..." She ducked her face into her sleeve before she went on. "You're not just going to drop a dog on my table and walk out, Yang. Get back in here and help me."
- She didn't wait for a response, but instead grabbed Yang by the wrist and pulled her back inside.
- From then on, it was Yang's job to handle Zwei as much as possible so that Blake wouldn't have to touch him. Even with her gloves on and with a small sanitary mask over her mouth, the poor girl kept sneezing every other second as she tried to examine the corgi.
- Yang kept him still with one hand on either side of him, and whenever he got a bit too anxious or nervous, she'd soothe him with gentle coos before he could try to nip Blake.
- Despite her ailments, Blake worked diligently on him, checking him over and running little tests. Yang knew Blake preferred to treat cats, not only because she wasn't allergic to them, but because that was what her years of training had made her most comfortable with.
- But even now, Yang could see the determined glint in her girlfriend's eyes to help Zwei. Blake wouldn't let any animal go untreated – not if she could help it.
- So even though she kept sneezing and her eyes were watering, she didn't stop until she'd managed to give Zwei a few shots. Once she'd finished with that, she asked Yang to put him back in his crate before she removed her mask and gloves.
- "Alri-ight-" Another sneeze. "Haa... alright. It'll be about fifteen or twenty minutes before the results come back, so you can just wait in the lobby, okay? But don't worry. As far as I can tell, he's just got a stomachache. Nothing serious." She presented Yang with a reassuring smile, then sneezed again.
- The blonde couldn't help but step close to Blake and pull her into a hug.
- "Thanks so much, Blake. It's a load off my mind. I'll text Ruby, too."
- Blake ended up sneezing several more times in her arms, so Yang rubbed and patted her back for her until her girlfriend stopped jolting.
- Once Blake had her breath back, Yang let her go so she could run the tests, but not before pressing another appreciative kiss to Blake's cheek. The dark-haired girl smiled and waved her off.
- "Go on. I'll call you back in after about twenty minutes."
- With a nod, Yang picked up Zwei's crate and headed back into the waiting room.
- She sat on the couch again and texted Ruby to assure her Zwei was fine, then put away her phone. With a small yawn, she slouched back against the couch cushions and closed her eyes.
- Just a short nap...
- Her brain was mainly occupied with thoughts of Zwei, and being where she was, she started to daydream.
- Unfortunately, her mind was playing tricks on her, and she couldn't recognize them as fake. Blake was coming out of her office crying, telling her bad news about Zwei...
- "Yang!"
- The call of her name roused her, and with a gasp, Yang's eyes flew open. She found herself back in the now-vacant waiting area, still slouched in her seat.
- Blake had perched herself on the arm of the couch beside her and was looking down at her with concern in her eyes.
- "Yang? Are you okay? What's the matter?" Blake quietly got up from the arm of the couch and instead sat down right beside Yang, watching her girlfriend anxiously.
- The blonde girl sighed, and only after blinking did she realize she was on the verge of crying.
- "S-Sorry... just a nightmare or something. I fell asleep..." She lifted a pair of frightened eyes to Blake's. "Zwei's... okay, right? He's gonna be okay?"
- Blake understood how worried the girl must've been about her dog, enough to let her mind impose the worst-case scenario.
- Blake wrapped her arms around Yang and pulled her in close to reassure her.
- "He's fine, Yang. He's absolutely fine. It's okay. Don't cry."
- But Yang couldn't help herself. Rather than from dismay or fear, though, she cried for relief as she clung to Blake's back and held her tightly.
- "Oh, thank god..."
- "It's alright," Blake soothed. "Don't worry."
- Realizing she was technically on her lunch break now and therefore not on-duty or required to act professionally, Blake allowed herself to comfort Yang a bit more intimately. She kissed her cheek and all along her forehead, rubbing up and down her back and petting her hair.
- All the while she murmured, "It's okay. Everything's fine," to calm her down.
- Yang kept reminding herself this was reality, that Blake was here and Zwei was fine.
- Gradually, the fear crept away as she sighed against Blake and squeezed her a little tighter. Blake maintained the hug for a moment until Yang felt better. Yang exhaled slowly.
- "Alright..."
- Blake rubbed small circles over her girlfriend's back.
- "You okay?"
- "Yeah. Thanks Blake."
- "Don't mention i- choo!"
- "Aww, still sneezin'?" It was Yang's turn to rub the girl's back for her. Blake sniffled and sighed again.
- "Yeah. But it's worth it if it means we know Zwei's okay."
- She pulled away from Yang just to fish a tissue out from her pocket, and turned her face away to blow her nose. She tossed the crumpled tissue into a nearby waste basket before Yang pulled her in for another kiss.
- It was both to thank Blake for helping Zwei and for reassuring Yang, and simply because Blake was her girlfriend.
- When they parted, Blake's face was slightly flushed.
- "Alright. It's my lunch break now so I'd better-"
- "Get in my car so I can take you out? Agreed. But we'll have to take Zwei with us."
- Blake smiled.
- "I can agree to that. So long as you agree that for every time I sneeze, you'll have to compensate with a kiss."
- Yang grinned and kissed her again.
- "That I can do."
