- Below the crest and out of sight of the mine, the hunter swung off the trail toward a grove of trees. Leaving his horse where it would not be visible from the trail, he got a collapsible spy glass out of a saddlebag and climbed back up the ridge on foot.
- At the top he bellied down in the shadow of a rock, adjusted the glass and studied the scene he had just left. There was no movement, no sign of life. He was setting down for what might well be a long wait when Red Buckley came around a corner of the stamp mill leading a saddled horse. He left the horse in front of the mine office and went inside. After perhaps ten minutes or so he came out again, swinging a pair of saddlebags that appeared to be empty. He draped these across the horse’s withers and swung into the saddle.
