- Dear Sir/Madam,
- As a content creator on YouTube, I am very concerned about the enforcement of COPPA. As it stands, the definition for "child-directed content" seems vague and it is hard to understand exactly which content would fall into this category. For example, I create content regarding an E rated game, however my videos are aimed towards competitive games which require knowledge of complex mechanics; the vast majority of my viewers are over 18. Would this count as "Child directed" despite being aimed at an adult community?
- To get clarity on this issue, before enforcing COPPA I would very much appreciate the FTC to:
- 1. Provide an enforcement statement for creators
- 2. Clarify the definition of “child-directed,” and not expand it to cover “child-attractive” content
- 3. Delay enforcement against creators until the FTC concludes its review of COPPA
- Though this enforcement will affect me personally, I am also concerned that enforcement will damage truly child directed content creators - YouTube is currently a great platform for child friendly and family friendly content, however, after enforcement much of this content will disappear as it is no longer financially viable for the creators to produce.
- I appreciate your time in reading and considering this.
- Kind regards,
- Sam Allen
