Here's a thought: What if it's just localized to members of the royal family, because the witch intended for Fucquor to have more regard for the lives of the people who serve him, namely, his closest knights that have guarded him for generations, but the fact that his servant took it means the exact opposite happens, either way they're bound to each other and now servitude is so, so much worse because royalty getting assassinated (as royalty is wont to do) makes every single living member of the family feel like they're dying, too
