- 1 d
- 2 e
- 3 a
- 4 c
- 5 b
- ---
- p. 141 - Read the paragraph about humpback whales. What is similar between their communication and human language?
- ---
- p. 143 - Inferring Conclusions
- “The bones on the left and right were separated, so it could detect the direction of a sound.”
- - We can infer that if the bones aren’t separated, it’s not possible to detect the direction.
- When you can infer something, you can make a conclusion and the author doesn’t need to spell it out explicitly for you.
- Read the sentences on p. 143. Which sentences can be inferred?
- 1 b (“on their own” = independently; the text doesn’t talk about “a wide range” of concepts)
- 2 a (To “get a handle on” something means to understand it and be able to use it.)
- 3 c (“Biomass” is the mass of other living things on Earth.)
- The text or author can imply this conclusion.
- Readers can infer this conclusion.
- ---
- Homework - p. 144 A and B, think about your answers to part C
- (For part C question 2, think of some ways that animal intelligence might be superior to human intelligence.)
