  1. Bombarda:
  2.
  3. The spell we are going to talk about is an effective one, but at the same point dangerous: Bombarda. Many students think, this spell is a duelling spell, a hex or a curse. But actually it is a Charm.
  4.
  5. It was invented by the Portuguese wizard Pietro Aventreiro in 1814 AD. He was a General of the Portuguese army. One of few wizards, who lived and worked in the Muggle world at that time. Still, there were witch hunts, especially in south Europe. Aventreiro lost his sword in a battle against the French Emperor Napoleon; and the gunpowder in his pistol got wet in the mug on the battlefield. So he pulled out his wand and killed a French Muggle to get space for standing up again. When he yelled the command to shoot on the enemy, in Portuguese „Bombarda!“, he pointed with his wand on the enemy and it caused a detonation that killed a group of French soldiers. Aventreiro had luck that no one survived this battle who could tell someone about Aventreiro using magic. But at this point, he invented the spell.

  7. Ofcourse, Bombarda can be used in a combat. But usually it is effective to make the way free, to break a locked door or a window. The stronger form of Bombarda is „Bombarda Maxima“ and it was invented in 1939 in Portugal. The name of the wizard or witch is not known. But fortunately we know the spell.

  9. But what is the effect of the spell Bombarda itself? Saying, it causes a detonation, is not really satisfying. This spell doesn't show as colored particles. The reason is, that it directly affects the aimed object, if wood or stone or whatever it is. It has an immediate effect on it. It does not hit flesh or water, because it is not solid enough. But once the spell hits the ground or a massive object, it will affect the atomic structure. It causes that the ions in the atoms shoot in random direction, so fast that the atom fractures. It causes a chain reaction and affect atoms around it. And like a snowball hitting a target, it spreads and causes a detonation. This is then, what we see as the explosion of Bombarda. This explosion again can be used to break a locked door or window. It also can hit humans and animals, once it explodes. And the effect of the explosion is harmful and dangerous.

  11. Students sometimes are not very careful, when they practice this spell. They often ar too close at the target. Thus, they here and there take a wound or burn their skin. There was one student, who lost his hand. Fortunately the healers in St. Mungo are capable and could bring his hand back. But this made the Headmaster in 1949, Armado Dippet (1637-1992), decide, that this spell gets implemented in the Hogwarts school curriculum for Charms. Here students can practice the spell with support and instructions by the Professor.

  13. This leads me to the prcatical part. Of course we will practice this spell today. No one of you aims a spot next to another student, or you will lose housepoints and land in detention. The incantation is, as you all should know, if you listened to the what I was saying, „Bombarda“. It is pronounced „bom- BAR- da“, not „bom-bar-DA“.
  14. The movements are: siwsh left → swih up to the right → jab → jab → swish down
