- Pronunciation reduction: “and” -> ‘n
- bed and breakfast -> bed’nbreakfast
- B and B -> “bee’nbee”
- Handout p. 42 - Write the word from the right side that is in a pair with the expression on the left, then practice saying the expressions.
- 1 king and queen
- 2 in and out
- 3 up and down
- 4 left and right
- 5 knife and fork
- 6 salt and pepper
- 7 bread and butter
- 8 good and bad
- 9 peanut butter and jelly
- (or you can say PB&J)
- 10 black and white (sounds like “blacken white”)
- 11 top and bottom
- 12 hot and cold
- 13 night and day
- 14 give and take (sounds like “given take”)
- 15 father and son
- 16 sister and brother
- 17 husband and wife
- 18 shoes and socks
- 19 eyes and ears
- 20 right and wrong
- 21 bacon and eggs
- 22 cats and dogs
- Note: depending on the sound the next word starts with, “and” can sound more like “m” or “ng” instead of “n”
- “pots and pans” -> pots’m’pans
- “wife and kids” -> wife’ng’kids
- Also note: some common pairs with “and” are almost always pronounced in one order, but not the other
- “black and white”, not “white and black”
- “father and son”, not “son and father” / “mother and daughter”, not “daughter and mother”
- “mom and dad”, not “dad and mom”
- (but “mother and father” and “father and mother” are both fine)
- You can search for both phrases (with “quotes”) in Google to see which is more common.
- You can also go to https://books.google.com/ngrams and type both phrases, separated by a comma, to see which is more common in English books.
