  1. A flying adder was in a hole,
  2. For elde black as any coal;
  3. Unto Bevis she gan fling
  4. And in the forehead thought him sting.
  5. Bevis was ready with is truncheon
  6. And smote her, that she fell adown.
  7. Up on again the adder rose
  8. And braid away his right brow;
  9. Then was Bevis sore aggrieved
  10. And smote the adder on the head;
  11. So hard dent he her gave,
  12. The brain cleaved on his staff.
  13. Down fell the adder, without fail,
  14. And smote so Bevis with the tail,
  15. That nigh a lose their countenance,
  16. Almost his life was in balance.
  17. When he awaked of that swoon,
  18. The truncheon heft to him a drough
  19. And beat her all to pieces small,
  20. As it is found in French tale
  21.
