- Hey guys. I really, REALLY hate asking for help like this, but I'm kind of desperate at this point.
- Basically... My whole life, my dad has had this really hyper-authoritarian "parenting" style, where - instead of seeing his kids as fellow humans who he has "authority" over for the purpose of nurturing them and helping them grow into functioning adults - he sees his kids as fundamentally lesser people, who he has basically arbitrary authority over. He sees the parent-child relationship as a relationship of domination and submission, rather than a relationship of love and trust: it can basically be summed up as "When I say 'jump', your only question should be 'How high?'". (In fact, I think he said those exact words to me when I was younger.) This dynamic has continued even into my adult life - it's just gotten less open and obvious - and I can't take it anymore.
- More generally, he's treated all of us - including my mom - as his subordinates for the whole time we've known him. He basically sees himself as the "alpha male" - he doesn't use that phrase, but it's very obvious by the way he treats us. He uses fear and intimidation to keep us "in line", and he throws temper tantrums when he doesn't get his way. This has gone on for over 2 decades now, and the ONLY time he wasn't like this was for a few months in 2017 after he got out of rehab for drug addiction - after which he very quickly relapsed back into his old behaviors for whatever reason. It's very clear he's capable of changing, but is unwilling to. And again, I can't put up with it anymore.
- Basically: I would very much like to move out of my house, preferrably as soon as possible. Problem is: I don't know where to even begin. I would need to find a place to live, preferrably fairly close to home. I would also need to take a break from school to do this - there's no way I could hold a job while taking classes at the same time - so I would need a decent-paying job that doesn't require a college degree. I do have a strong background in both music and mathematics, so (unlike my dad) I do have some marketable skills, but I don't actually have a college degree to "prove" it, so I'm kind of stuck.
- Let me cut to the chase: I need a cheap place to live that has (at minimum) a bed, a fridge, and internet - hopefully close to the Philadelphia area, although I'm flexible there - and a source of income that will let me survive. If anyone has ANY information that might help me find this, I would be eternally grateful. Even if you don't, just signal-boosting this would be very much appreciated.
