- Grammar: simple past and past continuous
- part 6 - Which tense is each verb?
- Why?
- Interruptions:
- I was taking a shower when the phone rang.
- = While I was taking a shower, the phone rang.
- = The phone rang while I was taking a shower.
- = When the phone rang, I was taking a shower
- Past continuous for the “background” action, simple past for the interruption.
- (“during” is a preposition: The phone rang during my shower.)
- Two things continuing at the same time:
- She was talking on the phone while I was taking a shower.
- = While she was talking on the phone, I was taking a shower.
- = I was taking a shower while she was talking on the phone.
- = While I was taking a shower, she was talking on the phone.
- Past continuous for both actions. Usually “while” for things that continue for some time.
- One thing happened after the other:
- I made dinner when I got home. = First I got home and then I made dinner.
- “When” is similar to “after” if both verbs are simple past.
- ---
- I ate dinner at 7:00. = I started dinner at 7.
- I was eating dinner at 7:00. = I was in the middle of dinner at 7. (I started before 7 and finished after 7.)
