- I need to cheapest VPS possible
- Title correction: I need the cheapest VPS possible.
- Hello, I am looking for a new hosting company for my personal use VPS. Currently I pay $36 annually for an OpenVZ VPS. It has 5 CPU cores(E5620), 4gbs of ram, 4gb vSwap, 200gb hdd, and 5tb bandwidth. I use the server for general purpose and its use-case switches every couple of months.

- My issue with the server is the kernel it is running is 2.6.3. What I want to use it for needs a kernel of 4.0 or later. If anyone can suggest a hosting service with a close price to performance ratio that would great. Thank You!
- Do you mean $36 monthly? as annually you won't find anything good!
- HI

- Yes I actually pay $36 annually. Please note I actually have not had any problems with the Host and all the specs do check out.

- That is because the shared OpenVZ kernel is old. You need to buy a KVM/Xen VPS. You will not find a KVM VPS with 4GB of RAM and 200GB of storage for $36/year. Still, have a look at Hetzner.

- Hetzner looks to be way out of my budget. To me 36$ is a decent amount of money.(I am in Highschool and don't have job)
- You will not find a KVM VM with 5 cores, 4GB of RAM and 200 GB of storage for $36/year. Your best bet would be to host it on your personal computer.

- Found this host, right now they are offering a VPS with better specs for just a little more. It looks a bit sketchy but might suit my needs. It doesen't state if its KVM or OpenVZ but i'm sure I can ask for that info

- I think at the price point you are looking for, sketchy is all you are going to get.
- Good, Fast, and Cheap. Pick 2. And since you've already chosen cheap, then your choices are Good and Cheap (meaning it won't be fast) or Fast and Cheap (meaning it won't be good).

- The page mentions vSwap which is generally applicable to OpenVZ.
- Ask yourself the question. Do you need five cores? Whichever host promises to offer that to you will be telling lies.
- Example:
- You want to buy 1 kg of gold for $36. A seller agrees and sells 1 kg of gold to you for $36. You are happy to have found "cheap" gold. If you take it to a lab, it would probably come out to be iron with golden color!
- I hope you got my point. It costs a provider more than $36/month (let alone year) to provision 5 dedicated cores on KVM. So back to the original point, do you really need five cores?
- Have you considered downscaling the allocated resources to compensate for the Kernel version? Since it will be hard to find a decent KVM vps plan with 5 CPU, 4GB RAM and 200GB HDD on the current budget. The main difference between OpenVZ and KVM is that the resources are not shared amongst other VM's, they are mostly dedicated to your VM. Those 5 CPUs and 4GB RAM were most likely used between several VM's and not dedicated.

- To Linux fox, yes I understand when I got my current host I was taking a risk I knew at that price point the chance that it was not all they advertised it as but from what i can tell the were telling most of the truth the, the major false was the internet speed which is a slow 10mps but advertised as a 1gbs connection. Everything that I have used the server for so far hasn't needed fast network speeds. Again this is a general purpose/testing VPS.
- Yes i have considered down-scaling i know i don't need 5 CPU cores but i am trying to give me head room for what I might do later on.
- I am really open to anything you guys want to suggest to me, the main things i care about is ram, network latency and at least 100gb of disk space also it needs to be able to be paid annually.
