- 2. FINDINGS (GENERAL)
- - Skip Water Gun unless you're running 14 Attack
- - Daily cans are the fastest cans
- - All attacking moves with a stat-lowering effect have a 33% chance of inducing the effect, and 25% if used by an enemy
- - Poison Sting has a 20% chance to poison, not 30% as widely documented
- - Thrash start-up animation + shake is about 2 frames faster than a flash (so Thrash is about 7 frames faster than Horn Attack; 4 if cursor is on HA; 10 if cursor is on Thrash)
- - Leer+HA+HA is about 17 frames faster than HA x3; if only variables are animations (16-frame difference) and # of turns (6-frame difference), HA x3 becomes worth it when there is at least a 5% chance to save a turn
- - Fast scrolling wind-up lag (~12 frames) seems to occur only when transitioning from the main menu to the inventory (so not after teaching a move, buying an item, etc.)
- - A text box is ~13 frames + its number of characters (so 26 frames for a critical hit)
- - Neutral flash + NVE shake is definitely faster than neutral flash x2
- > It's still faster given an extra input (e.g., going back to HA from PS) unless your menuing is slow
- - Shake x2 is about 0.5 seconds faster than Thrash x2; shake x3 is about 0.1 second faster, but slightly slower if the move has 8+ characters
- - 1 HP of overworld poison damage = 4 frames
- - Talking to an NPC from the direction they're facing is not faster than forcing them to turn
- - Wake-up turns count as sleep turns, so Oddish will always Absorb, Bellsprout will always Wrap/Growth, etc.
- - Formula for % to escape wild battle when slower: ((your speed*32)/(enemy speed/4))+(30*number of failed escapes))/256
- > So it's always less than 50%
- - On every heal at a Pokemon Center except the first one, clear the "POKEMON back to perfect health" text box with B, then hold A to frame perfectly select "HEAL"
- - A buffered up or down input on the Pokemon menu costs 0-1 frames
- - Scrolling up or down = 6 frames per slot
- - Item turn lengths: X Acc 1.2 seconds > X Speed/Special 0.8 seconds > Potion ~0.5 seconds > Super Potion
- - Consecutive input lag does not exist on Pokemon sub-menus (CUT, FLY, STATS, etc.)
- - Opening the main menu from the field takes 0.6 seconds; opening the inventory takes 1.2 seconds; opening the Pokemon menu takes 1.6 seconds
- - Using 2 Potions is ~2.4 seconds slower than using 1 Super Potion (3 Potions = 5.6 seconds slower)
- - When receiving a badge at the end of a fight, hold A or B during the short sound effect to frame perfectly clear the text box
- - Teleport pads do not pause movement (so they don't create turn frames)
- - Spearow's cry is about 40 frames longer than Pidgey's
- - Slot 2 to 3 fast scrolling works the same as slot 1 to 2, but you can't double input
- - Risky strat is probably worth it with any 14-15 DV Speed Nido
- > If money is a problem, buy 0/2 Super Potions or 9 Super Repels
- 3. FINDINGS (SPECIFIC)
- - Don't need to mash on "Let's go!"
- - PC Potion is 5.7 seconds
- - Mart guy Potion is 7+ seconds
- - Hold only B to get Oak's Parcel
- - Last tile on Route 1 (way down) --> same tile (way up) = about 9.88 DSum cycles
- - Talking to Oak from the side is not slower
- - Lv. 4 Rattatas are generally 4-shots, especially with 12 Attack, but they CANNOT be 3-shots
- > Probably always kill in last bush, but also on second-to-last with 12 Attack or 11-12 Speed
- - Lv. 4 Rattatas cannot have 12 Speed, and they are 19% likely to have 10 Speed
- - Lv. 4 Pidgeys are 5-shots with 10-11 Attack and usually 4-shots with 12 Attack
- - Lv. 4 Pidgeys cannot have 11 Speed, and they are 56% likely to have 10 Speed
- > Probably only kill in last bush, and only with 12 Attack and 11 Speed
- - YOLO ball breakout-->catch is ~2.8 seconds slower than Tackle-->catch
- > Probably still Tackle with 10-11 Attack
- > Exception: YOLO ball if you would reset after Tackle-->breakout
- - Tree Potion is 5.2 seconds
- - If healing before Weedle Guy, always do it on the tile before him (unless in a race, then do it in building)
- - Forest Potion is 7.9 seconds (8.2 minus an encounter tile)
- - Trainer exclamation point is about 1.05 seconds
- > This makes tree Potion only about 8 frames slower before accounting for menu placement
- > So tree Potion is faster on average, in addition to being safer
- - Picking up the Weedle Guy Potion on a turn frame is <0.5 seconds
- - Having Potions in slot 2 after Brock saves ~1 second with good menuing, so picking up the Weedle Guy Potion for safety costs ~3.5 seconds and saves $300
- - Tackle crit on Lv. 3 Nidos: 18-22 dmg on 9 Defense, 17-20 dmg on 10 Defense
- > Since normal Tackle never kills, healing on Nido > healing on Geodude (unless in a race)
- > So don't heal 15 HP before Brock (17 with bad Defense)
- - Mart menu lag does not cost time, so changing the options there is 2 frames faster
- - Caterpie damage DV tiers
- L10 (max 13-16): 0-4 .... 5-10 ... 11-15
- L10 (max 14-17): 0-3 ... 4-8 ... 9-14 ... 15
- L9 (max 14-17): 0-3 ... 4-11 ... 12-15
- L11 (max 16-19): 0-5 ... 6-9 ... 10-13 ... 14-15
- - Never lead with HA on Lv. 10 Weedle
- - Check stats at Lv. 10, not Lv. 11, for Ekans damage at -1
- - Favor HA x2 Ekans with 15 DV Attack (but consider Leer if damage is OK, PP is low, or Speed is good)
- - Ekans is a favorable range to 2-shot with 5 DV Attack, and guaranteed with 6+ DV and no crits
- - With 4-11 DV Attack, finish 7 HP Kakuna with 2 Tackles
- - With 3-9 DV Attack, or 0-2 with a badge boost, finish Lv. 11 Caterpie with Tackle x2 (8-10 dmg each) if second HA can't kill
- - After a Jigglypuff encounter, search for 9 steps (10 if Lv. 5, 11 if Lv. 7), then go to the other grass
- - 2 Zubats and 81 extra stat exp. boosts Attack for 5, 7 and 14 DV at Lv. 27
- > These boosts occur when you candy from Lv. 20 to 22 and don't switch out on Geodude (because Raticate gives 81)
- - At Lv. 15 with 8+ DV Attack, HA x2 is guaranteed to kill the Lv. 11 Voltorb
- - Always teach Water Gun two steps before the Hiker (can buffer Start input if encounter)
- - Finish Rocket's Zubat with Poison Sting when all of the HP is left of the ":L"
- - Geodudes are always 3-shots at Lv. 18, and usually at Lv. 17
- > Kill one with <14 DV Attack if it boosts from no exp. to 177 (or 138). Do not kill one if it boosts from 86+ exp.
- - Sand-Attack badge boosts gives 59%/100% Rattata OHKO chance with 10-15 DV (32%/85% with 7-9)
- - Finish Cerulean Rival's Pidgeotto with Poison Sting when all of the HP is left of the ":L"
- - Candying from Lv. 20 to 22 loses some value with 11, 12 or 14 DV Attack
- - With 15 DV Attack and Lv. 22, you have a 1/39 chance to 1-shot the Lv. 16 Pidgey with a non-crit
- - HA+PS always kills the Lv. 16 Pidgey with 11-15 DV Attack; needs 2 min rolls with 6-10 DV; needs 2 min rolls +1 with 4-5 DV
- - If Special DV is 1 or 3, check stats at Lv. 22
- - Tackle critical cannot kill the Lv. 18 Mankey (so that works to stall for red bar when you taught WG over Leer)
- - Leer+HA always kills the Lv. 15 Machop
- - It's never worth it to go for red bar off the Nidoran-M on Route 25
- - Lv. 23-->24 is a +3 unless you got <82 stat exp. from Mt. Moon encounters and have 10/12/14 DV HP
- - Fighting the Hiker for Lv. 26 costs ~25 seconds on average
- > Probably makes the strat never worth it for 1:48 attempts, but higher goal times could still benefit if bad Special
- - Need to mash B on "TELEPORTER's Cell Separator!"
- - In Bill's house, heal to lowest HP at which you won't need to heal again after 1 non-crit Peck
- - Centering before Misty is about 2.8 seconds slower than using 4 Potions
- - Order of switching on Starmie (13-15 DV Speed): flier, Paras, Squirtle
- - Order of switching on Starmie (0-12 DV Speed, assuming 1 heal): Lv. 12 Paras, Lv. 10 Paras, Squirtle, Lv. 8 Paras, flier
- - When Potioning before Bubblebeam, hold down to fast scroll (rather than counting slots), even if you aren't planning to YOLO scroll
- - If killing Route 6 encounter without Bubblebeam, use Horn Attack (3 frames slower) or Thrash, depending on PP and the encounter
- - Need 20 experience on Route 6 (any encounter) to recover Lv. 30 for Oddish; 167 if got Thrash after Mankey; 223 if got Thrash after Ekans
- > L13 Oddish: 144 ... HA DR on 0-1
- > L13 Pidgey: 102 ... BB DR on 0-4
- > L15 Pidgey: 117 ... BB DR
- > L10 Mankey: 105
- > L12 Mankey: 126
- > L15 Oddish: 167 ... HA DR
- > L16 Oddish: 178 ... HA DR
- > L16 Pidgey: 125 ... HA DR on 0-13 / BB DR
- > L14 Mankey: 148 ... BB DR on 0-13
- > L16 Mankey: 169 ... HA DR on 0-5 / BB DR
- - Early Dux costs about 2.4 seconds (counting potential cockblock)
- > Probably only worth it if both slaves are dead
- - YOLO scrolling to buy Repels is ~0.35 seconds faster than counting slots
- - Don't teach Bubblebeam in a separate menu before S.S. Anne Rival unless low on Horn Attack PP
- - Don't lead with Bubblebeam on S.S. Anne Rival's Pidgeotto unless 0-1 DV Attack or low on Horn Attack PP
- - HA+BB is guaranteed to kill Pidgeotto with 4+ DV Attack
- - BB+BB is guaranteed to kill Pidgeotto with 14-15 DV Special
- - With 15 DV Attack and Lv. 27, you have a 1/39 chance to 1-shot Raticate with a non-crit Horn Attack
- - Fastest stall moves on Kadabra: Bubblebeam, Leer, Water Gun, Tackle (because crit usually kills)
- - Order of switching on Ivysaur: low-HP Lv. 6 Pidgey, Squirtle, any other flier, Oddish, Paras
- - Voltorb can live two BB low rolls with perfect Special
- - With 2 Zubats and 18 extra stat exp., you get +2 HP at Lv. 28. All other level-ups are +3 or +4
- - Pikachu is 37.5% likely to use Quick Attack and 6.6% likely to crit
- > Probably worth risking 1 HP (or 2-4 with late level-up) if not risking it is likely to cause any Elite Four YOLO
- - Order of switching on Raichu: Pidgey, Squirtle, Spearow, Paras, Oddish
- - If no 4-turn Thrash, stay in or heal on Bellsprout with 1-2 HP; switch with 3+ HP; stay in if you can survive confusion damage (even if Wrap will kill)
- - Red bar off Cubone is ~2 seconds faster than red bar off the first Slowpoke, and ~3.8 seconds faster than red bar off the second Slowpoke
- - If healing before the second Slowpoke or Oddish, use Repel first (and use final Repel upon entering the Hiker's room)
- - If need 1 item to fill inventory and got Route 25 Elixer, get Max Ether outside of Rock Tunnel (and skip hidden Elixer in Lavender Tower)
- - If healing between Rock Tunnel exit and Lavender Rival, do it during a fight (Gambler or Lavender Rival)
- - BB+Thrash on Gambler is 1 second slower than Thrash+Thrash
- - Buying Soda Pop first doesn't change menus, so it should be done to permit a YOLO buy
- - When buying the Soda Pop, mash B to clear the text box, then hold A to frame perfectly buy the first Fresh Water
- - When buying the Fresh Water, clear the first text box with B, then hold A to frame perfectly select the water
- - When getting TM13 from the girl, mash B to clear the last text box, then hold A to immediately talk to her again
- - If still need 1 item to fill inventory at Celadon Mart, can buy 2 Super Potions and 1 Lemonade
- > Buying Lemonade takes 3.9 seconds (1.8 more than TM32)
- > Works best when out of Potions
- - Favor 3 Super Potions with average Special + HP; favor none with bad Special + HP, and get the Safari Full Restore if you have time
- - Swapping Super Repels + teaching Horn Drill on the bike menu is two fewer inputs and ~5 extra frames of movement/menuing
- - On Lavender Rival, X Acc + Drill x5 is ~1.2 seconds faster than TB x2, X Acc, Drill x3
- - If getting Lv. 32 for Growlithe, level-up is a +4 with 5, 8, 11 and 13 DV HP
- - If using X Acc on Growlithe, go down 2 (not up 2) to use Horn Drill
- - X Special + TB + Thrash always 3-turns the second Rocket in Lavender Tower with 11 DV Attack and DV Special
- > It's about 3 seconds slower, so only worth it if you couldn't afford an X Acc for Silph Machoke
- - If Spearow is in slot 2, teaching Ice Beam on the Super Repel/bike menu after the Celadon Center is 5-6 frames faster than teaching it in Fuchsia
- - On Poke Flute menu, counting to slot 4/5 is ~12 frames faster than delayed YOLO scrolling
- - Don't get the PP Up with 11-15 DV Attack (if bad Special, either IB Silph Rocket or risk range/2 X Spec on Silph Rival
- - Walking straight up in the Safari entrance building is 2-4 frames faster than walking right, then up
- - Safari Zone encounters are 8 seconds on average
- > Average time loss from 9 Super Repels + YOLO grass = 0.95 seconds
- > This makes 9 Super Repels the correct strat if it will allow an extra X Acc without losing a necessary X Special/Speed
- > "Necessary" = 3x Silph Rival, (Blackbelt), Viridian Rival, Agatha, 2x Lance (3x with 0 DV Special), Champion, (Sabrina)
- > If YOLO grass, use Super Repel (and teach Ice Beam/use PP Up) before the grass in the second area when you face down
- - If no PP Up, teaching Ice Beam in the Safari Zone allows a frame-perfect inventory close, saving 2-3 frames over teaching it in Fuchsia
- - Picking up TM32 takes 2.1 seconds
- - YOLO scrolling to 9F/11F costs ~1.4/2.4 seconds
- > YOLO scrolling saves time on average if you can hit 10F at least 84% of the time
- - When teaching HM03, fast scrolling and counting slots after the swap are about the same speed
- > So fast scroll if you stopped 1-2 short of the X item, and count slots if you hit it
- - If skipped heal pad and have terrible HP+Special for Silph red bar, consider using 1-2 Rare Candies to reach Lv. 36-37 before Arbok
- - If definitely going for Silph red bar, must use X Special on Pidgeot unless you can reasonably survive Hydro Pump after a Quick Attack
- - Ice Beam Pidgeot at +2 with 6+ DV Special
- - If using Poke Flute on Gyarados, swap Rare Candies up
- - Only Thunderbolt Growlithe if you want to take damage (crit is never guaranteed to OHKO)
- - Consider healing or using an X Special on Alakazam if not in red bar (Confusion ~46 dmg at +1, Psybeam ~61 dmg)
- - Perfect Rhyhorn red bar wastes 5 seconds (8 with a Guard Spec., 8.5 with a Tail Whip fail)
- - X Special on Rhyhorn is ~0.5 seconds slower than TB, so rarely worth it
- - Unless candies are used after Silph Rival, Lv. 40 is always a +4 on 12 DV HP and a +3 on all other DVs
- - Consider using Elixer on Koga's lead Koffing if all are true:
- > You didn't need one for the second Juggler
- > You didn't need to candy to Lv. 40
- > You need to take damage to keep red bar for Lv. 40 on Koga
- > You have at least 8 DV Attack, or 11 with delayed Erika (in case Smokescreen forces X Acc Koga + EQ Blaine)
- - X Acc on Koga is 1.7 seconds faster than TB (1.8 with cursor on X Acc), and X Speed/Special is 0.4 faster (0.5)
- - EQ Blaine is 0.8 seconds faster than Drill (-2.5, +1.2, +2.1), and EQ Koga is the same speed as Drill Koga
- - Getting TM06 from Koga costs 4 seconds
- - Gym order: Sabrina-->Blaine-->Erika if you have 0-4 or 14-15 DV Speed (non-risky strat) and want to EQ Blaine
- - On risky strat with Blaine first, IB is guaranteed to OHKO Victreebel with 6 DV Special (91% with 4-5)
- - Doing Blaine last has no benefit because you're 7 experience short of Lv. 47 for Arcanine
- - When teaching Strength early in the mansion, hold down after "A learned STRENGTH," then time the A and B inputs to close the menus
- - Biking to Blaine's gym is about 10 frames faster if done frame perfectly (so with reasonable execution, it is still faster)
- - When using Elixer before Giovanni 2, hold up before "PP was restored" text box clears, then time your A input to mount the bike
- - When you can use a Special move on Blackbelt, always use Ice Beam (you'll never run out of PP unless you Gen 1 miss)
- - It's worth risking 96% Ice Beam ranges on Blackbelt's Machokes (after X Special + Leer) with 5 DV Special
- - It's not worth risking a 91% Thunderbolt range on Blackbelt's Machop (after Leer) with 10 DV Special
- - Don't need to hold A or B when Giovanni gives the Earthbadge
- - If you have no X Acc for Agatha and are menuing for her, use slot 3 Elixer first on the menu
- - Consider using X Acc before X Speed on Gengar (saves 10-30 frames), especially under the following conditions:
- > Full HP
- > 0, 56 and 112 damage help manipulate red bar for Lance more than 0, ~22, ~44, etc.
- > 14-15 DV Speed
- - At Lv. 53, 13 DV Speed ties Gengar
- > So don't X Speed with 14-15 DV after getting the switch
- - After Haze, Golbat is a speedtie at 6 DV with 0 Carbos (8 DV with 0 Carbos at Lv. 52)
- - After Haze, Haunter is a speedtie at 6 DV with 3 Carbos, 7 DV with 2 Carbos, 8 DV with 1 Carbos, 10 DV with no Carbos, and 14 DV with the risky strat
- > If you have a spare X Speed/Special and won't be faster than Haunter, use it on Haunter
- - YOLO X Special on Lance is ~2.8 seconds faster than first-try YOLO Drill
- - When YOLO Drilling Lance with 12-15 DV Speed and bad Special, consider using 2 X Specials for Aerodactyl. Note that it's slower than X Speed + X Special + getting the range, because one of the Dragonairs will outspeed you
- - Aerodactyl is an 85% range with 15 DV Special and no X Speed badge boost
- - Hyper Potion turn on Lance is about 8 seconds
- - When in red bar: Wing Attack 0.3 seconds > Sky Attack 1 second > Mirror Move = Whirlwind
- - When not in red bar: Wing Attack 1.4 seconds > Sky Attack 1 second > Mirror Move = Whirlwind
- - Mirror Move'd Ice Beam from Pidgeot does about 70 with X Speed and 53 with X Special
- - Don't set up on Champion's Alakazam when you get turn 1 Sky Attack and can survive Psychic (you're more likely to survive the Sky Attack than to not get crit/confused by Alakazam)
- 3. EXPERIENCE MARKS (assuming 2 candies to 23 ASAP)
- - 118/79 to 15 for Voltorb
- - 43/4 to 17 for Voltorb
- - 86/47 to 20 for Rattata
- - 177/138 to 23 for Mankey
- - 1476 to 26 for Starmie
- - 74 to 27 for Raticate
- - 51 to 28 for Pikachu
- - 69 to 29 for Caterpie (bad)
- - 167 to 30 for Oddish
- - 28 to 31 for Pidgey
- - 70 to 32 for Growlithe
- - 36 to 37 after Silph Rival
- - -112 to lose 40 for Muk
- 4. ONLY MASH B AT
- - An NPC's last text box
- - "Here, come with me!"
- - "I'm fed up with waiting!"
- - "but you can have one! Choose!"
- - "What about me?"
- - "A, you can have one too!"
- - "I'll take this one, then!"
- - "Come on, I'll take you on!"
- - "A! Gramps! Smell ya later!
- - "Hey! You came from PALLET TOWN?"
- - "I ordered! Thank you!"
- - "Gramps!"
- - "What did you call me for?"
- - "have a request of you two."
- - "It's a hi-tech encyclopedia!"
- - "undertaking in Pokemon history!"
- - "to lend you one, A! Hahaha!"
- - "Wait! Take this with you!"
- - ...
- - ...
- 5. RACE STRATS
- - Don't Leer x2 on first Caterpie with 14 Attack
- - If got destroyed by Route 1 encounter, get Mart guy Potion and heal before Nido bush (rather than saving)
- - Get Forest Potion in a race if 2 might not be enough for Weedle Guy + Brock
- - Need 487/448 exp. for early early Thrash (4 Geodudes gives the latter, and 1 Geodude for early Lv. 22 is a minor penalty)
- - If you want Lv. 28 for Voltorb, consider getting Body Slam instead of fighting the Gentleman
