  1. One of the major themes of Beowulf would be the concept of reputation. The author seeks to help the readers understand that reputation is important to Beowulf, as he is worried of how the world will view him in the beginning of the epic poem. He introduces himself with deeds he's done to gain honor from his community and, more importantly, the king. Beowulf, after defeating Grendel's mother, also abandons the gold in the cave to take Grendel's head and the magic sword's hilt. This is to gain fame and influence.
