  1. Last updated 03/27/2017. Recipes match the official Piggyback guide, and this guide is complete.
  2.
  3. Tl;dr cooking mechanics are given below. If you just want the list of recipes, CTRL+F for recipe list.
  4.
  5. Quick tips to get started:
  6. - You can skip the cooking animation with X.
  7. - From the item menu, press X and then A to hold an item quickly.
  8. - You can't mix food buffs: No food can give multiple buffs, and if you can't eat a +attack food and then eat a +defense food, the second buff will overwrite the first.
  9. - Yes, you can have food ingredients in elixirs. Just make sure to have a monster part and a critter in the mix.
  10. - You can hold food ingredients (carrots and such) and your horse will eat them to gain them various buffs.
  11.
  12. Q) What is the best recipe for X / how do I cook a particular recipe for a quest?
  13. A) Don't overthink the cooking system - the stats of food just result by combining the properties of the ingredients you use. Some combinations result in different names of dishes, but this is unrelated to the stats of the result. If you have to cook a dish with a particular name, i.e. for a sidequest, scroll down to the "recipe list" below.
  14.
  15. Q) How do I cook?
  16. A) Select an ingredient from your inventory and "Hold" it. You can hold multiple ingredients. Dropping them on an open flame cooks the ingredient individually (this is a bad thing), you need a cooking setup (i.e. some vessel with a fire under it) to combine ingredients into dishes / elixirs.
  17.
  18. Q) How do I find cooking setups?
  19. A) Most villages have a cooking setup, i.e. Kakariko has a pot on a campfire by the grocery store. But, you can also find unlit campfire with pots on them in some campsites in the wild.
  20.
  21. - You can light an unlit campfire in any of the following ways:
  22. -- Take a torch / flammable weapon / drawn arrow to a lit fire and then touch the unlit campfire
  23. -- Use a fire arrow
  24. -- Drop a flint in front of it and strike it with a metal weapon
  25.
  26. Q) How do I get ingredients?
  27. A) Collect them either in the wild or by hunting or fishing, or buy them at shops.
  28. -- Collectibles ingredients seem to respawn every few hours of gameplay, it is unrelated to blood moon
  29. -- Shop restock behavior: Shops restock at midnight, but will NOT restock an ingredient if you have "too many" of that ingredient in your inventory. They will also not restock if you are in the same map segment, so fast travel to a different part of the map (at least one tower away), advance past midnight, and then come back to force a restock.
  30.
  31. Q) What should I cook?
  32. A) Simple: just mix the strongest ingredients you have to make a stronger dish (multiples of the same ingredient will stack.) In either case, you should NEVER mix ingredients with different special effects, as the result will have NO special effect.
  33. - All short-term effects cap at 3 tiers, including armor bonuses and effects of food (so, a +3 attack food is unnecessary if you already have the full barbarian armor set (gives +3 attack), but Ancient Armor and Radiant Armor give a different bonus so they do stack with +3 attack food.) To get to the higher tiers, you have to add multiple strong ingredients.
  34. - Environmental hazards such as extreme heat, extreme cold, Death Mountain fire, never require more than 2 tiers to defend against. So, while you can get 3 tiers of heat resistance, it is always unnecessary. Go for longer duration with 2 tiers, instead.
  35. -- Important note: Death Mountain fire requires _fireproofing_ to survive, this is different than _heat resistance_ which you use to survive the Gerudo Desert.
  36. - Some ingredients have very low potency, i.e. 5xSwift Carrot still only gives a 1 +speed tier, whereas just 3 Swift Violets will get you 3 +speed tiers. Critters, in general, have very low potency, so you can get the impression that critters never stack (it's not true though, Electric Darners are very high potency and do stack.)
  37. - Use exactly one Bird's egg to boost duration of short-term effects. Additional eggs don't give as much of a boost.
  38. - The most useful dishes increase your max-hearts or max-stamina ("Hearty" or "Endura" ingredients), since they fully recover your hearts / stamina and give you more hearts / stamina to boot. Stamina ("Energizing" ingredients) restoring dishes are also useful, and Energizing ingredients are easy to come by. Extra hearts lets you survive attacks you couldn't otherwise and is more convenient than constantly eating food to recover hearts. Extra stamina and stamina restoration lets you climb / swim to places you couldn't otherwise.
  39. - If you want to cook to make money, see "How do I make money off of cooking?"
  40.
  41. Q) How do I make money off of cooking?
  42. A) The sell price of a cooked dish (elixir or food) is roughly 3x the sell price of the combined ingredients. Cooking whatever ingredients / monster parts you have lying around is a good way to make money fast.
  43.
  44. - Early game, farm easy-to-find critters (i.e. restless crickets or fireflies) and combining them with whatever monster parts you have lying around from killing mobs.
  45. -- Ex: common critter + 4x Moblin fangs (guaranteed drop from the big, dumb, tall bokoblins) => 140 rupies.
  46. -- Other monster drops are less lucrative, i.e. critter + 4x keese wing => 30 rupies. Still not bad, I suppose.
  47.
  48. - Mid-game, another good money maker is meatx5 skewers
  49. -- Rabia Plain (The area near Mezza Lo shrine), due NE of the Kakariko Great Fairy, is _filled_ with deer that drop Prime Meat.
  50. -- 5x raw prime meat => 210 rupies.
  51. -- (An aside: the price of meat skewers exceeds 3x the sell price of the combined ingredients - not sure what's going on)
  52.
  53. - Late-game, you can easily make prime meatx5 skewers
  54. -- The snow fields in the far north have elk which are easy to kill and drop 3 prime meat apiece.
  55.
  56. Q) Low-level details about cooking?
  57. A) Bullet list:
  58. - Auxilliary ingredients, i.e. grains, milk, eggs, spices, etc., but also dragon parts, increase short-term effect duration, but the increase is less if you already added one of that kind.
  59. -- Ex: Bird's egg gives +90s duration for one, +30 for each additional egg. Goron spice is the only other such food ingredient; the other aux ingredients give less duration and are hence less useful.
  60. - Monster parts are great at increasing duration (so elixirs tend to have longer duration than food.) The best are any kind of guts (bokoblin, molduga, etc.) will give +190s each, as will ancient / giant ancient cores. Dragon scales give 90, claws give 210, fangs give 630, and horns give 1800s (which maxes out the duration) -- but remember dragon parts drop to +30s if you use that ingredient twice.
  61. - Monster extract gives a random duration buff for short-term effects of either 1, 10, or 30 minutes.
  62.
  63. Short-term special effects include cold/heat resistance, fireproof (different than heat resistance), resistance to electricity, movement speed buffs, defense/attack buffs, and stealth buffs.
  64.
  65. The other two special effects increase your max-hearts and max-stamina, some notes:
  66. - Duration is irrelevant, this effect runs out when you use the additional stamina / hearts.
  67. - Eating a dish with either effect fully recovers your health or stamina, respectively
  68. - Eating multiple dishes does not stack the increase, rather you get the effect from the strongest food.
  69.
  70. Food ingredients by approximate short-term effect potency (Within a tier potencies can be slightly different):
  71. A tier: Zapshroom, Swift Violet, Silent Princess, Voltfin Trout, Mighty Porgy, Armored Porgy, Electric Darner
  72. - Zapshroom is unexpectedly high tier
  73. B tier: Fleet-lotus seed, Mighty Bananas, Razorshroom, Ironshroom, Fortified Pumpkin, Mighty Carp, Armored Carp, All crabs, All frogs
  74. B- tier: Silent Shroom
  75. - 5x any ingredient B- tier or above guarantees +3 special effect tiers.
  76. C tier: Chillshroom, Sunshroom, Chillfin trout, Sizzlefin trout, Stealthfin trout, Cold Darner, Warm Darner,
  77. - You usually can't get to +3 special effect tiers with C,D, or E ingredients
  78. D tier: Voltfruit, Electric Saffina, Thunderwing Butterfly, Smotherwing Butterfly, Restless Cricket
  79. - You can't get to +3 special effect tiers with D or E ingredients
  80. E tier: Hydromelon, Spicy Pepper, Rushroom, Swift Carrot, Cool Saffina, Warm Saffina, Mighty Thistle, Armoranth, Blue Nightshade, Sneaky River Snail, Summerwing Butterfly, Winterwing Butterfly, Bladed Rhino Beetle, Rugged Rhino Beetle, Sunset Firefly, Hightail Lizard, Fireproof Lizard
  81. - You can't get to +2 special effect tiers with E ingredients
  82. - As you can see, most critters are very low tier, so it can seem like critters don't stack (but Electric Darner is an exception)
  83. In any case, adding a lower tier ingredient to a few higher ones can push you over the edge to one more effect tier, so experiment!
  84.
  85. For where to find ingredients and what effects each ingredient has, scroll down to the bottom of the guide.
  86.
  87. Worked example: Let's say we want to make the optimal defense buff food using Armored Carp as our base ingredient.
  88. - First do some test, and find Armored Carp gives 1/1/2/3/3 +def tiers for 1/2/3/4/5 fish & each fish gives 50s duration.
  89. - Bird's egg is a great duration extender, +90s for using one and +30s for each additional.
  90. - Armoranth is a poor potency Tough ingredient, but still gives 50s duration each, so we can try replacing Armored Carp for Armoranth. Indeed, 3Armored Carp + 1Armoranth still gives 3 def tiers!
  91. - Combining the above, ArmoredCarpx3 + Armoranth + Bird's Egg gives 3 def tiers @ 4:50.
  92. - Therefore, we can call this recipe optimal in terms of economy (3 armored carp + 2 even cheaper ingredients) while still having the highest +def tiers and duration possible (without resorting to more expensive ingredients.)
  93. * Note Ironshroom and Armored carp have identical potency, so you can substitute that
  94.
  95. Another example: Let's make optimal movement speed potions using common ingredients.
  96. - Fleet-lotus seeds are abundant in general, one place to get them is in Zora's domain right by the shrine teleport.
  97. - All speed boosting ingredients seem to give 60s to duration.
  98. - 3 fleet-lotus seeds are not enough to reach 3 tiers of movement speed, but adding a low-potency Hightail lizard (found all over) gets us there. And it has no less duration than any other options for the 4th slot.
  99. - The best duration ingredient (without using dragon parts) comes from guts.
  100. - 3 fleet-lotus seed + 1 high-tailed lizard + 1 bokoblin guts = 3 movement speed elixir @ 7:10.
  101. * If you for some reason had a lot of hot-footed frog, you can substitute that for the seed.
  102.
  103. Sometimes when cooking, there is a different cooking sound and the result is slightly better. This is a crit.
  104.
  105. Q) How do I get crits?
  106. A) Crits are random, except:
  107. - Crits are guaranteed during the hour of the blood moon (Seems to be only 11:30 - 11:59PM)
  108. - Using a star fragment or dragon scale guarantees a crit
  109. - Using a variety of ingredients increases crit rate
  110. -- Test this one out for yourself! Make an elixir with 4 keese wing vs 4 different monster parts - the latter crits most of the time, the former just some of the time.
  111.
  112. Q) What do crits do?
  113. A) Crits will have one of the following effects, chosen randomly from the below:
  114. - increased duration for 5 minutes (only if the recipe has a short-term effect)
  115. - increase effect tier by 1 (only if the recipe has a short-term effect)
  116. - increase max-hearts by 3 (only for Hearty recipes)
  117. - increase recovered hearts by 3 (only if the recipe recovers hearts)
  118. - increase max-stamina by 2/5 (only for Endura recipes)
  119. - increase stamina recovery by 2/5 (only if the recipe recovers stamina)
  120.
  121. - A crit doesn't increase the sell value of the item.
  122.

  124. A) The guide combines information from this prima guide [1] and this wikia page [3] and the discussion of cooking mechanics from [2]. Very minor input from [4]. Update: the guide now also matches the information in the piggyback official guide [5]

  132. Recipe list
  133. ======
  134. If the result has a special effect, it adds a one-word prefix:
  135. - "Tough" for +defense food
  136. - "Mighty" for +attack food
  137. - "Spicy" for +cold-resist food
  138. - "Chilly" for +heat-resist food
  139. - "Fireproof" for +fire-resist food
  140. - "Electro" for +shock-resist food
  141. - "Hasty" for +speed food
  142. - "Sneaky" for +stealth food
  143. - "Hearty" for +max-hearts food
  144. - "Enduring" for +max-stamina food
  145. - "Energizing" for food that restores stamina
  146.
  147. Some ingredients act the same:
  148. - Raw Whole Bird and Raw Gourmet Meat are both "Gourmet Meats"
  149. - Raw Bird Thigh and Raw Prime Meat are both "Prime Meats"
  150. - Raw Bird Drumstick and Raw Meat are both "Base Meat"
  151. - Spicy pepper is treated as a fruit
  152. - Truffle is treated as a mushroom
  153.
  154. If multiple recipes match your combination of ingredients, the first listed is what you will get.
  155. - My theory is that each recipe has an internal ID, and the weird ordering is because the game devs added some recipes early in development and added other ones later. But, some dishes had to be moved around so that more-specific recipes would always show up earlier in the list than others. And, to make it all work the devs had to add some recipes multiple times in the list (fried wild greens, fairy tonic)!
  156. - An example: Meat+Salt gives salt-grilled meat, Fish+Salt gives salt-grilled fish, Meat+Fish gives Meat and Seafood fry, and Fish+Meat+Salt gives... Salt-grilled meat, because the recipe for salt-grilled meat comes before the recipe for salt-grilled fish and the rule for Meat and Seafood fry.
