42. A cyborg assassin called "The Terminator" is sent back through time to 1984 to kill the seemingly innocent Sarah Connor-a woman whose unborn son will lead the human race to victory in a bitter future war with a race of machines. If the Terminator succeeds, mankind is doomed. Sarah's only hope is a soldier from that post-apocalyptic war, who has chased the Terminator back through time. The future of the human race depends on which one finds her first...
 43. In the year 2029, a computer called Skynet is fighting against a human resistance, after having nearly destroyed the rest of humanity in 1997. Skynet has found a way to send some of it's warriors, called Terminators, back in time. This is the story of the Terminator sent to kill the resistance leader's mother in 1984, before she gives birth. The resistance sends a warrior named Kyle Reese back to 1984 to protect the young woman. The question is, can Sarah Connor survive long enough to have her child so that history remains on track?
 44. The Terminator starts in the future post apocalyptic year of 2029 where the machine has taken complete control & are engaging in a war intent on wiping mankind out, after realising they have lost the war against mankind the machines send a T-800 cybernetic terminator (Arnold Schwarzenegger) back in time to 1984 Los Angeles where it is programmed to kill Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) the mother of the leader of the resistance who in the future will defeat the machines. At the same time the resistance is able to send back a protector for Sarah, a soldier named Kyle Reese (Michael Biehn) in an attempt to prevent her termination by the killer cyborg. The streets of Los Angeles become the fighting ground for the very future of humanity as Sarah must survive or all hope for mankind will be lost...

This English American co-production was co-written & directed by James Cameron & has gone on to become widely acknowledged as just about the best sci-fi action film of the 80's & maybe even to this point it hasn't been bettered, it's an iconic film with many moments that have become part of pop culture & the amount of killer robot flicks that have followed is also a testament to it's popularity & influence. The script by Cameron & producer Gale Ann Hurd is a terrific action packed thoughtful & intelligent sci-fi thriller, it has a great pace about it with plenty of car chases, shoot-outs, fights & futuristic battle scenes to satisfy most action junkies & plenty of robots, an extremely well thought out time travel story that makes perfect sense & an underlying message about putting too much faith in machines & computers in an era when the modern PC hadn't even been invented & I guess Cameron just saw the way things were going. There's so much to enjoy here & so little to not not like, from exciting action set-pieces set both in the present & the future, some great special effects that hold up pretty well even today, a really good solid sci-fi story which is well thought out & easy to pick up & understand while still managing to be gripping & a really fast pace which simply doesn't allow the viewer to become bored although there's still enough meaningful character development when needed for you to care for them & what happens to them. An almost perfect film & an absolute classic of the genre or indeed any genre, one of the best films ever made. Period.

Director Cameron has since gone on to become one of the biggest director's in Hollywood with a string of huge films like Aliens (1986), The Abyss (1989), Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991), True Lies (1994) the the most successful film ever made to date Titanic (1997) while The Terminator was his second full length feature film after the OK horror sequel Piranha Part Two: The Spawning (1981) & he does a great job of making his small budget go far. From the action scenes to the special effects The Terminator is an impressive film even today, OK some of the stop motion terminator effects aren't the best they still at least look alright. The film is very violent with lots of gun-play, there's also some gore as the terminator has to get rid of his damaged eye by inserting a scalpel into it & plucking it out, he also has to slice his arm open to repair some mechanics.

With a supposed budget of about $6,400,000 this didn't have a particularly big budget but the film doesn't suffer as there's still more car chases, shoot-outs, special effects & fights than a lot of much higher budgeted Hollywood stuff from the time. The music is great, the effects are good, it's well made & the production values are high. The acting is very good all round, apparently only paid $75,000 Schwarzenegger is perfect for the role & he gets to say his trademark 'Ill be back' for the first time on screen.

The Terminator is a solid gold 100% classic & it's as simple & straight forward as that. There quite simply isn't anything that I don't like about this film, definitely recommended. Followed by the equally as brilliant Terminator 2: Judgment Day, the not so brilliant but still enjoyable Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2008) while a third sequel Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins (2009) is apparently in production.
 45. No-one is going to deny that there is a lot of excitement and fun to be had here, but there are gaping plot holes ( a time travel plot will do that I suppose) and some pretty terrible writing. ("In the short time we had together we loved enough for a lifetime" is one notable stinker) But can we mention a couple of things.

1) The soundtrack. Surely the least effective collection of '80's synthesiser sounds trying to sound portentious ever recorded. Really a shocker. It clanks and plonks along with little connection to what's happening on screen and sounding like it was recorded in a barn. Horrible.

2) Who was responsible for Linda Hamilton's hair? Sure it was the '80s, but seriously her hair looks like something a cocker spaniel might reject. And then it gets messed up and she gets it redone in the same style, just to prove it was deliberate. There's no excuse.

3) The special effects... yes, I know the movie was done on the same amount as the catering budget Cameron used for Avatar, but even so, those effects where Arnie is pulling out his eyeball are a nonsense, they must be the least effective pipe bombs in history and the metal skeleton at the end - well, don't get me started on the metal skeleton. Ray Harryhausen could make an army of skeletons look believable and even charming in Jason and the Argonauts, but this thing is pretty damn lame.

I suspect that when people say "I love the Terminator movies", what they really mean is "I love Terminator 2" - a rip snorter, exciting, innovative movie. If ever there was a movie series that came into its own with the sequel it's this one.
 46. Schwarzenegger is presented as a lumbering slab of dumb, destructive strength--the image is more geological than human--and Cameron plays his crushing weightiness against the strangely light, almost graceful violence of the gunplay directed against him. The results have the air of a demented ballet.
 47. Ultimately the fate of both characters is left unclear, either or both may have died or lived. The Terminator's eye was badly damaged during the car chase with Reese and Sarah. The living tissue covering the Terminator's body heals in a manner similar to regular human tissue. The same would also be true for injures that are sustained to a Terminator's exterior flesh that cannot be easily heal or heal at all. In this case, the T-800's eye was damaged beyond repair and, more than likely, was clouding his vision through his true cyborg eye, so he removed it to regain his perfect cybernetic vision. Sure that the Terminator has been destroyed in the fiery truck crash, Sarah and Kyle hug each other. Behind them, the android emerges from the debris, its flesh completely burned off. It follows them into a factory where Kyle turns on the automated machines in order to make tracking them more difficult. Still, the Terminator succeeds in cornering them on some scaffolding, and Kyle is forced to place a bomb in the chassis of the android. The bomb explodes, scattering pieces of the android but severely wounding Sarah in the leg and killing Kyle. While attempting to crawl away, Sarah is attacked by the top half of the Terminator's skeleton. She succeeds in luring it into a compactor and, even while it still tries to break her neck, she crushes it until its red eye fades. In the following scene, she is taken in an ambulance to the hospital while Kyle is removed in a body bag. In the final scenes, some months later, a pregnant Sarah is driving through the southwestern desert and stops at a gas station. While her tank is being filled, she continues to dictate into a cassette she is making for her son. She questions whether she should tell him about Kyle being his father and wonders whether that will affect his decision to send Kyle back in time to save Sarah. A young boy snaps her picture and asks for $5.00. She gives him $4.00 and keeps the photo (it's the same photo that John will give Kyle in the future). The boy looks off into the distance and says that a storm is coming. Sarah replies, "I know," and drives off. The Terminator Enhanced Script Presentation, with highlighted dialogue and over 300 screenshots placed in sync with the story. Not in the context of this movie. In the film we see that Kyle Reese fell in love with Sarah from looking at a picture of her which had survived Judgment Day. He describes how he was attracted to the melancholy look she had about her. In the final scene of the film we see the picture being taken and that the melancholy look is caused by the fact that Sarah is thinking of Reese, her dead love. Within the context of the first film, this should probably not be considered a paradox. What we see in The Terminator is that history is unchanging. The Terminator came back to stop John Connor from ever being born, but in doing so, it actually caused him to be born. In the first movie, time cannot be changed and there is no version of history where Sarah was not attacked by the Terminator in 1984. The second film doubles down on the circular nature of the timeline by making clear that Cyberdyne creates Skynet using technology which they reverse-engineered from parts of the Terminator which Sarah and Kyle fought. Thus, not only John Connor, but also Skynet itself are the result of the attempt by Skynet to eliminate John. The second movie, however differs from the first in arguing that time can be changed. The photograph, which is created by information from the future and then contributes to its own creation, is inspired by the time travel romance film Somewhere in Time (1980), starring Christopher Reeve (a difference of only one letter from "Reese") and Jane Seymour. That film, which involves Reeve traveling back in time and meeting Seymour, has a pocket watch which exists in an eternal "loop". It is never actually created but is instead passed from Reeve to Seymour and back again. a5c7b9f00b
