  1. Pokemon Sapphire any% glitchless speed run guide
  2. Updated May 4, 2015 (see changelog below guide)
  3.
  4. Compendium (trainer stats, moves, experience, money): https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1n7rmyMGOR9ishlC8LuXxKtSgnwNxOUY2XScyPvFnGqo/edit#gid=0
  5.
  6. -----------------------------------------
  7. STUFF TO KNOW
  8. - Running near spinners and rotators causes them to face certain directions. If you try to run past a spinner or rotator, s/he will always catch you.
  9. - Opening the bag or Pokemon menu freezes spinners for 32 frames, assuming you do not run near them.
  10. - The cursors for the main menu and inventory never never reset unless you save+quit (so no point in swapping items to the top of your inventory).
  11. - You cannot buffer inputs in Gen 3, so it is generally best to menu immediately after an event, rather than in the middle of movement.
  12. - Zigzagoon has a 10% chance of picking up an item after each battle. Any time you're on the Pokemon menu, remove an item from Zig if you see one.
  13. - When Mudkip/Marshtomp/Swampert's HP is at 1/3 or less, its Torrent ability will trigger, which boosts the power of Water-type moves by 50%.
  14. -----------------------------------------
  15.
  16. Before starting:
  17. - Have a save file with the text speed as FAST, battle scene as OFF and battle style as SET
  18. - Set the timer to -58.60
  19.
  20. NEW GAME
  21. - Select "New Game" when the timer hits 0.00
  22. - Choose the boy
  23. - Give yourself any 1-character name
  24.
  25. LITTLEROOT TOWN
  26. - Withdraw the Potion from the PC, then set the clock to the default time
  27. - After the TV cutscene, walk right to May's house. Walk upstairs, then talk to May, then walk out
  28. - Walk up to Route 101
  29.
  30. ROUTE 101
  31. - Choose Mudkip after looking in the bag. Select "YES" when the timer hits 2:43.00 (this will take a bit of practice, as you need to hit within 5 frames)
  32. - Check Mudkip's nature and stats. Reset unless you see one of these five Mudkips:
  33. > 12779 | Lax 4/31/23/24/25/30 ..... Lv. 5 stats: 20/13/12/11/9/10
  34. > 12780 | Gentle 30/24/25/21/22/22 ..... Lv. 5 stats: 21/13/9/11/12/10
  35. > 12781 | Lonely 22/21/22/9/26/30 .... Lv. 5 stats: 21/14/9/10/11/10
  36. > 12783 | Hardy 13/29/0/30/30/19 .... Lv. 5 stats: 20/13/10/11/11/9
  37. > 12784 | Hasty 19/30/30/25/10/12‏ .... Lv. 5 stats: 20/13/9/11/10/9
  38. - Poochyena: Tackle spam
  39.
  40. LITTLEROOT TOWN
  41. - Give Mudkip a 1-character name
  42. - Head north to Route 103
  43.
  44. ROUTE 103
  45. - Rival 1: Tackle spam (use Potion if a non-crit Pound will kill)
  46. - If you have less than 15 HP after the fight, use your Potion now
  47. - Walk back to Littleroot Town
  48.
  49. LITTLEROOT TOWN
  50. - After exiting the lab, walk to the left so that you're two tiles to the right of your mom, then talk to her from the right
  51. - If you used your Potion during the rival fight, walk inside and talk to your mom to heal
  52. - Run up to Oldale Town
  53.
  54. ROUTE 101/OLDALE TOWN
  55. - Catch a Zigzagoon or Poochyena if you see one (Tackle once)
  56. - If you caught a Zig/Pooch and it damaged you, talk to the lady on the right when you enter Oldale Town to get another Potion
  57. - Run left to Route 102
  58.
  59. ROUTE 102
  60. - Talk to the first trainer you see
  61. - Youngster Calvin: Tackle spam, healing as necessary
  62. - Run through the grass to dodge the remaining trainers
  63. - If you can survive a Tackle from Zigzagoon/Poochyena (generally same damage as its level), catch it if you see one (Tackle once)
  64.
  65. PETALBURG CITY
  66. - Run to the mart
  67. - Shopping: Buy 1 Potion, 3 Repels, 1 X Speed and 3 X Attacks
  68. - Run to the gym, and mash through/watch the long cutscene
  69. - When the cutscene ends, run west to Route 104
  70.
  71. ROUTE 104
  72. - Run through the first patch of grass
  73. - If you see a Zigzagoon or a Taillow/Wingull, catch it (Tackle once)
  74. - Get the 2 Oran Berries
  75. - Run to one tile below the path, and stop one tile before the grass. Use a Repel, use a Potion if you have <20 HP, and equip an Oran Berry
  76. - Run through the grass, and behind the trainer, to enter Petalburg Woods
  77.
  78. PETALBURG WOODS
  79. - Run left, and stop running at the tile to the bottom-right of the Bug Catcher, then walk past him. This is 100% spinner manipulation, so you don't need to open the bag
  80. - Aqua Grunt: Tackle spam, healing as necessary. You can switch out to a slave to erase Sand-Attack drops, but this is rarely necessary
  81. - Run left again, then pass the first Bug Catcher the same way as the first one
  82.
  83. ROUTE 104
  84. - Get the 2 Oran Berries on the left
  85. - Run to the tile below the water. Wait for the rotator to look away, then walk past her and up the bridge

  94. - Roxanne: Water Gun spam
  95. > The first Geodude is a range with <19 Sp. Atk at Lv. 12
  96. > Roxanne will use a Potion (up to 2) whenever her Pokemon is at <40% HP
  97. > Nosepass has 17 Speed, and if you have 18 (Lax, Gentle and Lonely), it will try to lower your Speed with Rock Tomb
  98. > Nosepass does ~15-20 damage with Rock Tomb and Rock Throw
  99. > If Nosepass has lowered your Speed and is faster on the turn that you can kill it, sacrifice a slave to undo the Speed drop
  100.
  101. RUSTBORO CITY
  102. - Run left to activate the cutscene, then up and right to Route 116
  103.
  104. ROUTE 116
  105. - NOTE: You need 360 experience between now and Rival 2. Keep track of it as you go
  106. - Take the bottom path, picking up the item ball (Repel) as you go
  107. - Stop one tile before the grass, and use a Repel. Also remove the Oran Berry if it didn't activate against Roxanne
  108. - You can manipulate the Bug Catcher with running, but waiting for him is safe and loses minimal time
  109. - You do need to manipulate Janice (the Schoolgirl spinner) after the Bug Catcher. Run to the tile immediately to the left of her, then walk up and right past her. If she catches you, spam Tackle
  110. - Talk to the Hiker (Water Gun x3)
  111. - Run into the cave

  119. - Manipulate Janice again (run to tile to the right, then walk up and left past her)
  120. - Manipulate or wait for the Bug Catcher
  121. - Talk to the Devon guy to activate the cutscene
  122.
  123. RUSTBORO CITY
  124. - After leaving the building, run to Mr. Briney's house south of Petalburg Woods
  125.
  126. ROUTE 104
  127. - After exiting the forest, run through the grass behind the trainer
  128. - If you haven't caught a Zigzagoon, grind here until you catch one (Mud-Slap to weaken)
  129. - If you see a flier, YOLO ball it unless:
  130. > It's a Wingull and you're not in Torrent (Water Gun)
  131. > Taillow has lowered your Attack with Growl (Tackle)
  132. - Talk to Mr. Briney to sail to Dewford, then run to the cave
  133.
  134. GRANITE CAVE
  135. - Map: http://i.imgur.com/Jii4k6Y.png
  136. - Pick up the Escape Rope item ball on the ground floor
  137. - Kill everything you see (Water Gun) except Sableye and Abra until you have your 360 experience (this is Marshtomp + 27 exp.)
  138. - When you evolve, teach Mud Shot over Growl
  139. - If you see an Abra, throw your best ball to catch it (can be an Ultra Ball if Zig picked one up)
  140. - If you run out of Great Balls and don't have Abra, check Zigzagoon for an Ultra Ball if you have one
  141. - Repel after catching Abra and getting 360 experience
  142. - After the cutscene, Escape Rope if you have Abra and 360 experience. If not, grind on the ground floor until you have both
  143. - After exiting, run to Mr. Briney's house and sail to Slateport
  144.
  145. ROUTE 109
  146. - Pick up three items:
  147. > Revive (run left upon entering; it's hidden in the corner)
  148. > Ether (run right, then up 2 tiles from the Revive; it's hidden in the corner)
  149. > Soft Sand (talk to the girl on the right, next to the Ether)

  164. - Repel + equip Soft Sand one step before the grass
  165. - You can either dodge Timmy (the Youngster spinner) with running manipulation or fight him on purpose for valuable experience (and so you don't hit him on the second pass, when the experience is much less valuable). If you fight him, Mud Shot x3
  166. - Pick up the hidden Full Heal (2U and 4R of Timmy)
  167. - Heal to 13+ HP for Rival 2
  168. - Rival 2: (Heal as necessary), X Attack x2, X Speed, Mud-Slap+Mud Shot, Mud Shot+Mud Shot, Water Gun
  169. > Grovyle usually does 30-36 with Absorb and about 9 with Quick Attack. It does 34-40 with Absorb to the Lax Mudkip (and to the Hasty Mudkip if you're Lv. 18)
  170. > Grovyle will use Quick Attack if it is guaranteed to kill, so you must Super Potion if this is the case
  171. > If you miss the first Mud Shot on Grovyle, you can sometimes manipulate Quick Attack by healing to an HP at which Absorb hits Marshtomp into QA range. This gives you another chance to hit the first Mud Shot at the expense of a Super Potion
  172.
  173. ROUTE 110 (after Rival 2)
  174. - Manipulate Edwin (the Pokemaniac spinner) by running one tile below him and two tiles to his right, then walking past him. If he catches you, use Tackle and heal if necessary (Absorb does about 20)

  213. - Before the grass patch, bonk into the trees, use a Repel and teach Strength to Marshtomp over Tackle
  214. - You must pass Trent, the Hiker spinner before Fiery Path, three times. It's fastest to YOLO the first pass, then wait for him to turn for the second pass. If he hits you, the experience is valuable (Water Gun x4)

  228. > Don't buy the Escape Rope if you have the one from Granite Cave
  229. > If you have the Hardy Mudkip and have hit 0-1 spinners, buy 2 X Defends if you can afford it
  230. > If you have extra money, buy extra X Attacks first, X Speeds second and X Specials third
  231. - Upon exiting, bike west to Route 114
  232.
  233. ROUTE 114/METEOR FALLS
  234. - If you need a flier, don't leave the route until you catch Swablu (WG once to weaken)
  235. - Bike down the bridge, then immediately turn right (behind the house), and go down to get 4 Persim Berries
  236. - Bike left and follow the path to Meteor Falls
  237. > Super Repel + heal to full one tile before the second trainer (Hiker Lucas) so that he can't spin left and catch you

  253. > Use a second X Speed on Golbat if you have the Hardy Mudkip and have hit 0-1 spinners
  254. > Heal as necessary; Mightyena does about 18, and Golbat does about 25
  255. - Bike down the mountain, then take the south exit
  256.
