  1. Paper Mario Zero: The first tale
  2.
  3. It was just another day. Just like the other ones... except that Luigi stepped out to work on something. I had the whole house to myself. It was so quiet that I took a nap on the couch. I dreamt of spaghetti and meatballs going down a waterfall when suddenly... Dingaling! The mail came!
  4.
  5. I hopped off the sofa and went outside to the mailbox. Inside was a pink letter with the smell of perfume. I could tell who it was from. Princess Peach.
  6.
  7. I’ve saved her numerous times from an ugly looking Koopa called Bowser. Sometimes she invites me over to her castle to go on a date or something. She really liked me a lot. I did too. The way she tiptoed along the path in her garden, the way she flipped her hair, the way she laughed was also amazing. Not to mention she used some high quality perfume. But what can I say? She was a princess. She deserved all the nice things she got. Especially since she also was supposed to have special powers to do certain things or something. The only special power I knew of at the time was her ability to use her dress to levitate in mid-air. But she didn’t use that very much.
  8.
  9. After I contemplated the beauty of Peach, I opened the letter and gazed at her amazing handwriting.
  10.
  11. Dear Mario,
  12. I would like to invite you over to my castle for a special party. There will be cake and everything! I hope you can come as soon as possible. Everyone else is already here. (So hurry up and get here with the warp pipe!)
  13. Yours truly,
  14. Princess Peach S. Toadstool
  15.
  16. She always knew how to throw a good party. And besides, everyone else was already there! So I dashed to the other end of the front yard, hopped into the warp pipe, and jumped out in Toad town. Her castle was just a little bit across town. I passed the various townsfolk and those at work as I hastily made my way to Peach’s castle. Eventually I made it. The front was strangely quiet. Though I thought I heard someone laughing behind a bush. I just let it pass. When I opened the door, an explosion of confetti flew out and everyone yelled “Surprise!” I was confused. A surprise? Of what kind?
  17. “Happy birthday Mario! We all gathered together to celebrate your 30th birthday.” Peach said with her usual sing-song tone.
  18. “My birthday? I completely forgot!” I said in disbelief
  19. “How could you forget your own birthday? My birthday is just a day before!” Luigi said I looked at all the decorations.
  20. “Oh yeah, now I remember! I just forgot because we haven’t been doing much lately”
  21. “Well, are you just going to stand there or are you going do open your presents?” Peach said as she tiled her head to one side.
  22. “Okay! Where are they?”
  23. “Here’s the one from me bro!” Luigi said as he handed me a neatly wrapped box.
  24. I examined it for a second. The wrapping paper had blue and red stripes all over and it was topped with a very curly yellow bow. I ripped open the package to find a new pair of brown shoes. My other ones were getting worn out from all the jumping.
  25. “Thank you! I’ve wanted another pair of these for a while!”
  26. “No problem bro,” Luigi said as Toad brought in another present for me to open.
  27. “This one is from me,” Peach chimed as Toad put the box down in front of me. I was amazed at the kind of wrapping paper they used. But then again, she was a princess. She had lots of money to spend. After looking it over, I carefully unwrapped the nice looking box, trying to keep the wrapping paper intact so that I could save it. Inside the box was...
  28. “Um... what is this exactly?”
  29. “Oh! Silly me, that’s a star point collector! The instruction manual says that this thing can make you a lot stronger! But you need to fuel it with these things called star points. You usually find them near tough things.” Peach continued to explain her gift when a bunch of other Toads came into the room with a large package on wheels. Despite this, the Toads were still exhausted when they finally wheeled it in place.
  30. “Package...for Mr. Mario...It’s from...Professor...Gadd...” One of the Toads said this before passing out from pushing the big package. I decided that I would open it later.
  31. “By the way, where’s the cake?” I asked everyone.
  32. “Don’t you want to open your really big package bro?”
  33. “Actually, I want to save that for later,”
  34. “You heard him! Bring in the cake!” Peach yelled down the hallway. Soon a small group of Toads rushed out of the kitchen with a cake on wheels. They then got out a big red candle and stuck it at the top. Another Toad came in and lit it with a giant pack of matches. I blew out the candle and then we ate cake. Peach really knew what I liked. Now it was time to open the big present. I jumped up and grabbed a seam in the wrapping paper and I tore it down. I unwrapped the present and became puzzled by its appearance.
  35. “What is this thing?” I asked in confuzzlement.
