  1. >Reza had been gone for all of two days and in those two days two people turned up dead
  2. >And the culprit pretty obviously had to be human
  3. >So you, the human, went around gathering evidence for the police
  4. >All things considered it was no wonder Maverick was taking every opportunity he had to piss in your cheerios
  5. >Especially because he'd been shot by your alleged partner
  6. >After that alleged partner had dropped a tinfoil-tier sermon of imminent doomsday on you
  7. >Of course not-a-cop accidentally snuck up on you while you were on your way back from today's evidence-gathering trip
  8. >And of course he told you to shut the fuck up, he's talking now
  9. >This all seemed so fucking familiar
  10. >So he asked you why you're here
  11. >shit man don't you read the papers
  12. >But then again you couldn't shake the feeling that this was about more than the generator deal now
  13. >Though you couldn't quite put your finger on what exactly it was about either
  14. >He probably wouldn't have appreciated you telling him you're only here to ensure a smooth transfer, though
  15. >So you told him he wouldn't understand
  16. >wait shit wrong answer
  17. >Fortunately he didn't blow up as much as you'd thought he would
  18. >He asked why you can't tell him
  19. >He didn't even wait for your answer
  20. >yeah fuck no you asked a question you're getting your answer
  21. >You can't tell him because
  22. >Because
  23. >uh
  24. >Because you can't really be sure of your privacy out in the open like this
  25. >Yeah that's it
  26. >Totally not because you don't even know your own ulterior motives
  27. >Maverick made a face at you. The rude kind.
  28. >"Right. So you want to go someplace remote, private and secluded."
  29. >Yeah, why no-
  30. >"Just how dumb do you think I am?"
  31. >Okay fine
  32. >Let's go grab a coffee and just sit away from other people
  33. >"Hrm. All right."
  34. >You started walking towards the centre of town
  35. >Actually it's more like Maverick started walking you to the centre of town
  36. >And constantly feeling his stare on you didn't make coming up with a story any easier
  37. >You'd made your way to the café and sat down in a quiet booth in the corner
  38. >Adine brought you your coffee and, after noticing the look on your face, bit back her questions and suppressed her skinfaggotry
  39. >Thanks, Adine
  40. >"Here we are. Start talking."
  41. >Well, you know how I was going to talk to Reza that night, right?
  42. >"Yeah, so?"
  43. >"I, uh, might not have told you everything."
  44. >Whoever made sweating and hot flashes a human stress response should be shot
  45. >You could swear there was some heat haze above the table from the stare he'd just given you
  46. >"Hey, that's why we're here now, right?"
  47. >He kept staring at you and your internal thermostat kept rising
  48. >Your coffee was probably going to start distilling into concentrate any moment now
  49. >"Uh, anyway. Reza said the world - yours - is going to end soon."
  50. >"And I've kinda known him for a while. I don't think he's just suddenly lost it."
  51. >Maverick's gaze softened just barely enough to drop the temperature down to that of a Finnish sauna
  52. >As a result of your correspondingly decreasing adrenaline levels you were now sweating BB shot rather than bullets
  53. >"So you're saying he's committing those murders because he believes everyone's going to die anyway and nobody will be left to hold him accountable."
  54. >"That, and he wants the generators, fast. I guess he's afraid of not making it out in time."
  55. >At this point you merely felt the heat of an exceptionally warm day - by Saharan standards
  56. >Your coffee had stopped evaporating and was in the process of forming a small rain cloud above your cup
  57. >"That means he will try to steal as many as he can in as short a time as possible."
  58. >"And it also means that this is something the police need to know. They know what the town's power grid looks like, and they know how to protect it."
  59. >The hostility in Maverick's perpetual frown had been completely replaced by deep concentration.
  60. >"No. Ripping out generators all over town is going to take him too long. He knows where they're being built. He was shown around the place just like you were, he'll hit the facility first."
  61. >Maverick rose from his seat
  62. >That means, he tried and failed not to look embarrassing wriggling his way out of a booth evidently made for smaller dragons
  63. >"Wait, where are you going?"
  64. >There's that "how dumb do you think I am" look again
  65. >"The police station. What you're saying makes sense, and you didn't have enough time to make that story up."
  66. >You quickly finished your condensed coffee and breathed a sigh of relief into the empty cup
  67. >You didn't have to explain your motives after all
  68. >Just as well, you still hadn't figured them out
  69. >Later at the station Sebastian's eyebrows all but disappeared inside his cap when he saw you walking in with Maverick and noticed the lack of blood on either of you
  70. >"Seb, we've got news."
