Bonus: “I” and “Me”

In one of the scenes above, there is a conversation between Luneth, Ingus and Desch that focuses on pronouns.

In Japanese, there are many different pronouns. I am not an expert on Japanese by a longshot, but I’ve done a bit of reading into pronouns and what they mean.

The key point of that scene is that Luneth calls out Ingus for using the pronoun “watashi”. “Watashi” is generally a gender neutral pronoun for formal settings, although women use it more generally/less formally. In the final version of III (to my knowledge anyway) Refia and Ingus always use “watashi'' when referring to themselves. Thus, while for Refia it seems normal, for Ingus it means he’s speaking formally a lot.

It’s notable in Ingus’ case, as he seems to begin using “ore” at some point (while switching back to “watashi” when in front of royalty). In the final game, as previously mentioned, he keeps using “watashi”.

It’s worth mentioning in that scene that when Desch jokes about using “ore” in that last line, he uses the katakana (オレ) version of it, rather than the kanji (俺) version the game normally uses.

For those curious, Luneth and Desch both also use “ore”. Arc, being shy as he is, uses the less assertive “boku”.
