  1. Magic was hard for Savannah to control. It often came in bursts of emotion, in moments of pure fury - or in an eager attempt to boost her ego, to impress someone she deemed worthy. Her pride kept her from furthering herself; she was already as good as she needed to be. She was perfect, because she was Savannah.
  2.
  3. But in that moment where Gerhard’s gleaming, venom-green stare burned into her, Savannah realized she wasn’t enough. He looked down upon her, and her lust for petty revenge grew stronger by the second. How dare he degrade her! She paced through the forest, muttering behind gritted teeth. The grass at her feet simmered, but not at her volition.
  4.
  5. She needed to be prepared for times like this. She needed to be able to blast naysayers right in their face at a moment’s notice! She could burn them with her searing hot words - literally.
  6.
  7. ---
  8.
  9. But how would Savannah go about this? She was no expert magi, no, she was born simmering hot and not even her parents could handle her. How could she handle herself? Already, she grew impatient with herself.
  10.
  11. “Do something!” she cried out to the forest. Birds and fauna fluttered away, leaving her clearing alone. Empty. Frustration seared through her. She wheeled around on her heel and brought her fist to the trunk of a tree --
  12.
  13. “Aieee!” She retracted her fist and the bark of the tree caught flare, simmering and cracking. “Kraus damnit!”
  14.
  15. The tree was ablaze, and she had no way to fix it! The entire forest could burn down! Savannah’s heart leapt. What was she to do?!
  16. ---
  17. She glanced left and right, looking to see if anyone was watching. The first thing on her mind was her reputation - was anyone watching her? Was there anyone here to actually help? When she saw that no one was in sight, that Gerhard was gone, her critical thinking began.
  18.
  19. Before she had fled from the orphanage, one of the ladies there taught her water magic to compliment her firey attitude. She thought that maybe it would help calm Savannah down, but she was flat out wrong! Once she found out the lady’s intentions, Savannah left the place and began to fend for herself.
  20.
  21. This was one of those moments - she had no one to hold her hand. She began to think back to the days of the musty old orphanage, where the woman guided her hands kindly. The sound of her voice echoed behind the tree’s burning and crackling:
  22.
  23. “Find peace within yourself, and use it to hone into the water around you. Move it around. See? You can do it.”
  24. ----
  25. Savannah shut her eyes, zoning out the crackling of the tree's wood, the simmering of the grass beneath it. She distanced herself, stepping several feet away. For just a moment, she felt peaceful.
  26.
  27. And for just a moment, she could hear it.
  28.
  29. The rustling of the grass. The stirring of the leaves. The water within them. All living things require water, and plants were no exception.
  30.
  31. She moved deeper.
  32.
  33. She could hear the dew on the singular blades, the droplets of rain's residue splatting within the hollow of a leaf. She could hear the liquid moving inside each organism, each cell, each organelle.
  34. ----
  35. She threw her hands up in the air. The water was gone, ripped out of each organism, each cell, each organelle. In the area surrounding her, the grass and leaves were devoid of live - in a single second, Savannah had killed an entire patch of grass.
  36.
  37. Her eyes snapped open and, with a whip of her arms, doused the fire. Smoke filled the air and the simmering of the wood where her fist had impacted hissed through the area.
  38.
  39. It was done. She had doused the fire, but the damage was still evident. The area of impact was burnt and crackled, leaving a hollow in the trunk of the tree. If she had reacted faster, there would be no trace. There would be nothing leading back to her.
  40.
  41. With a grimace twisting her expression, Savannah treaded back home.
  42. -----
