But right then, there was a tremendously loud ROOOOOOOAR like
thunder as the glittering slopes of the mountains collapsed. There was a
huge avalanche of snow and ice, which slid down the mountainsides,
forming a thick wall of ice in front of Godzilla.
The kaiju was half-buried under the avalanche. He tried to struggle free,
but the limitations on his movement just enraged him even more.
Kobayashi’s plane crash was over in a fraction of a second, but it left
Tsukioka stunned. He stared without any expression on his face for a
moment before returning to his senses. “Tajima, look! Look at that!” From
his seat behind Tajima, Tsukioka lifted himself up and pointed to the
avalanche Kobayashi’s plane had unleashed.
“Wow!” Tajima nodded vigorously. “Calling all planes. Commence
bombing raid from above.”
The jets headed toward the mountain slopes, picking up altitude along the
way. One bomb . . . Two bombs . . . Five bombs . . . Ten bombs.
As the bombs rained down around Godzilla, only a little more snow and
ice came tumbling down from the soaring mountain peaks. The bombing
raid was ineffective.
Tsukioka gritted his teeth and shouted regretfully, “It’s not working!”
“Then let’s fire some rockets directly into the mountainside.” Tajima held
his radio transmitter up to his mouth and said, “First, Squadron Number
One needs to return to home base to arm itself with rockets. All remaining
planes should stay here and keep Godzilla occupied!”
Accompanied by two jets, Tajima flew off toward the base on the
mainland.
Godzilla was gradually starting to work his way out of the avalanche
caused by Kobayashi’s plane. Before long, the monster’s entire body would
be showing.
