- [03:27] *** Milly has quit IRC: Ping timeout
- [05:42] <@Gryph> Princesses are fine, but you get the benefits listed in the trait and that's it. (No, you may not go to the palace and collect Rajah, the 12th level Tiger barbarian, so that he can eat your foes.) Rage doesn't have to be ARARARARARA, it just has to be drawing on your inner reserves of strength and ferocity. Whether you fluff it as ME ANGRY, ME SMASH!, magically channeling your own life...
- [05:42] <@Gryph> ...force, entering a meditative combat trance, etc, is entirely up to you.
- [05:44] <@Gryph> Halberds do not have reach, but the otherwise statistically identical Glaive does.
- [05:53] <Expletive> Gryph: You time travelled again!
- [05:54] <Expletive> Gryph: What if I wanted to be a run-away princess?
- [05:55] <@Gryph> I may or may not attach campaign elements to your traits, both mechanical and character, and will do this on a case-by-case basis as I feel it would improve the game.
- [05:58] <@Gryph> You cannot craft things that the scientific (and arcane) knowledge of your society does not provide you with the information required to construct. Craft Engineering is fine and it would allow you to devise blueprints for buildings and siege engines. No amount of knowledge ranks or crafting feats will let you advance the scientific knowledge of your universe forward hundreds of years in...
- [05:58] <@Gryph> ...the span of a few months (possibly barring epic plane-hopping high level adventures to wrest the mystic secrets of Integral Calculus from the greedy clutches of the gods themselves).
- [06:03] <Expletive> What about Craft(Clocks)? It's a valid skill for the construction of Clockwork Golems. What about using it for other clockwork devices?
- [06:06] <@Gryph> Crafting inventions that are powered by known scientific (but not arcane) principals would fall either under the appropriate category for the invention in question and be simply a new take on an old idea with little or no stat significance; or it would probably fall under craft (toy) and might provide a useful, if not particularly impressive, function. Craft (clocks) would allow construction of s
- [06:06] <@Gryph> ome clockwork items, yes.
- [06:07] <@Gryph> Crafting inventions powered by arcane principles will require Craft Wondrous Item, the feat, and caster level 3, its prerequisite.
- [06:09] <Expletive> What about Milly's character? At fifth level she can take magic item crafting feats as if she were a caster, even though her class isn't a spellcasting one.
- [06:09] <@Gryph> That would work, I think.
- [06:10] <@Gryph> Constructs that appear to defy the known principles of physics as applied to the technological and materials sciences abilities of the time period, such as wizards' towers, would typically be the result of a crafter with ranks in a crafting skill and Craft Wondrous Item.
- [06:11] <Expletive> "'ey bruv, 'ow dat wizard tower bein' so tall?" "'unno mate, s'magic"
- [06:12] <Expletive> You're implying that the populus in general is so uneducated they can't even understand how to make a tower?
- [06:14] <@Gryph> http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a1/TurnulChindiei.jpg Craft Engineering.
- [06:15] <@Gryph> http://fc06.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2012/331/c/e/wizard_s_tower_by_jcbarquet-d5mc33w.jpg Craft Wondrous Item.
- [06:19] <@Gryph> Yes, the populous in general is so uneducated that they can't understand how to make a tower, and so is the modern populous, because making towers is hard. The professional tower-makers of the period would, of course, understand how to make a tower, the the best ones would even understand how to make towers that exceed the best buildings made in the medieval period, because they have access...
- [06:19] <@Gryph> ...to much better and much cheaper materials than ancient europe did.
- [06:20] <Expletive> That's obviously being supported by buttresses, of the flying and non-flying variety.
- [06:21] <Expletive> Also your comments are inspiring me.
- [06:21] <@Gryph> What they do not have access to is the eight hundred years of technology and materials sciences required to make buildings like that that wouldn't fall over on their own.
- [06:21] <@Gryph> Let alone develop stress fractures and promptly crumble the first time a minor earthquake or a big windstorm hit.
- [06:22] <@Gryph> There's a reason why skyscrapers are about eighty years old and it doesn't have anything to do with people being stupid.
- [06:22] <Expletive> Also it'd totally be possible for me to start the game with a tiger if I wanted to.
- [06:23] <Expletive> Aside from DM fiat saying I can't.
- [06:23] <@Gryph> Tigers are awesome and I support this decision but please don't eat the other party members.
- [06:24] <@Gryph> Just make sure it's legal and not some obviously unintended extrapolation of another rule.
- [06:24] <Expletive> Oh, it's legal.
- [06:24] <Expletive> I'd just have to take the Rich Parents trait and buy one. Combat trained tigers only cost 500gp\
- [06:26] <@Gryph> I am fine with this.
- [06:29] <@Gryph> However, you should ask your fellow party members if it is okay, as I suspect your tiger will be the main part of the party's combat capability for the next several levels.
- [06:32] <Expletive> Hrm.
- [06:35] <Expletive> While it would be cool, I only really brought it up because you mentioned Rajah the tiger, but this could be worth making an entire other character sheet for.
- [06:39] <@Gryph> you'd probably need to start as a rogue or go full int-based-fighter to make it work, since I imagine it requires a ton of points in handle animal.
- [06:40] <@Gryph> Still! I love tigers! I love Disney movies! I love Frazetta art! If I ever end up in a dnd/pf game again I will make it happen.
- [06:41] <Expletive> Handle Animal is a CHA based skill though.
- [06:41] <@Gryph> good for a rogue, then :3
- [06:41] <@Gryph> and rajah can grant me flanking advantage :3
- [06:41] <Expletive> Also a Combat Trained Tiger is listed under the section for 'Riding Animals'
- [06:42] <@Gryph> Warning: do not spur the tiger.
- [06:49] <@Gryph> reasonable, though, given its listed weight
- [06:49] <@Gryph> d20 tigers are huge.
- [06:51] <@Gryph> although it wouldn't be nearly as easy to ride a tiger as to ride a horse, even if it would let you... they're just not made for that sort of thing. I'd be inclined to limit its maximum carried weight much more severely than its stats would allow, and maybe require some stiff prerequisites to riding it in combat.
- [06:52] <@Gryph> Because tiger should be for eating puny humans, not ferrying them around!
- [06:53] <@Gryph> And yeah, CR4
- [06:53] <@Gryph> the tiger would be worth more in combat than the entire party at level 1.
- [06:54] <Expletive> Yes
- [06:56] <@Gryph> when you have multiple natural attacks, you just pick one to be your primary and the rest take -5, right?
- [06:56] <Expletive> No.
- [06:57] <Expletive> Primary/Secondary are based on what type of attack they are.
- [06:58] <Expletive> Claw/Bite/Gore/Sting/Slam/Talons are all primary. Hoof/Tentacle/Wing/Pincers/Tail Slap/Others are secondary
- [06:59] <Expletive> Generally, anyway
- [07:00] <@Gryph> Okay, thanks :)
- [07:00] <Expletive> The way it works, is that when a creature with natural weapons does a full attack, it makes one attack with each primary natural weapon it has at it's full attack bonus, and each secondary at a -5 penalty.
- [07:00] <Expletive> So a girallon, with 4 claws and a bite, makes five attacks at it's highest attack bonus.
- [07:01] <@Gryph> What if the creature has weapons, too? Like suppose you were some form of creature with a claw attack, and you had a sword in one hand, would you make just the sword attack, the sword and one claw attack, or the sword and both claw attacks?
- [07:04] <Expletive> Okay. The way this works: Clawed Tiefling has two claws for 1d4 each. They wield a sword in one hand. When they make a full attack, they attack with the sword, and then can use any natural weapons they have as if they were secondaries. But hold on, since the tiefling is using a sword, it can't make both claw attacks. So it could do Sword +10/Claw+5, or Claw +10/Claw+10 but not Sword+10/Claw+5/Claw
- [07:04] <Expletive> +5 because it's holding a sword in the same limb as one of it's claws.
- [07:05] <@Gryph> got it
- [07:07] <@Gryph> What kind of action would it be to release or grab a 2-handed weapon with one hand (while holding it with another hand)? Suppose our tiefling had a glaive and wanted to whack the rogue ten feet away and claw the fighter five feet away; could he attack the rogue, let go of the glaive with his off-hand, and claw the fighter?
- [07:10] <Expletive> Gryph: http://paizo.com/threads/rzs2pjdu?Twohanded-weapons-and-claws#1 Relevant thread
- [07:11] <@Gryph> that makes sense
- [07:19] <Expletive> Assuming I used Rich Parents to afford the combat trained tiger, would you let a 1st level cavalier select it as their mount?
- [07:19] <CelestialDoggie> (in general, it's a free action to let go of a two-handed weapon with one hand, as well as to grab it again with that hand)
- [07:19] <CelestialDoggie> (this is what lets wizards two-hand a quarterstaff and still cast spells)
- [07:21] <Expletive> Hi CelestialDoggie
- [07:21] <Expletive> What would you think of using the Rich Parents trait to start at level 1 with a combat trained tiger?
- [07:29] <@Gryph> I would rather not deal with mounted combat yet, so Rajah would be fighting alongside you, rather than as a mount.
- [07:33] <@Gryph> I told him that I was fine with it but that he should ask the other players before taking it since the CR4 tiger will represent a majority of the party's combat capacity all by himself until level 3 or so.
- [07:34] <Expletive> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lrjA6tl6hpA
- [07:36] <Expletive> Eh, I probably don't need a tiger. It's rather game-warping
- [07:41] <Expletive> I'm gonna go to sleep now, so I can get some rest before my other pf game
- [08:34] <CelestialDoggie> yes, I read the entire exchange after I woke up
- [08:34] <CelestialDoggie> buying a tiger would be ridiculous but when has that ever stopped a D&D/Pathfinder player before?
