  14. Hello Jessica,
  15.
  16. Thanks for your long response! Right now I'm in contacts with Ashvini regarding the situation, so we'll see how it goes :).
  17.
  18. 1) Great suggestion, actually! Now that I think about it, I do agree with your sentiment that some chapters in California will have a difficult time raising the necessary funds to attend the national conferece. I'll remove that clause from the responsibilities packet :).
  19.
  20. 2) The actual thought of mine was that because the Core Team would have six people (three from Northern and three from Southern), that we would inside our group also decide the traditional State Officer roles (i.e. President, VP, Secretary, Treasurer, Sergeant-At-Arms, Reporter), so that way it would be easier for national TSA to manageI It's something I'll have to coordinate between both core teams, but ideally I'd like to be like most states and send one State President representative, so this was my reasoning :P.
  21.
  22. 3) For sure, I'll make sure to ask Ashvini about the group chats! :)
  23.
  24. You helped a lot with my general questions, and I'll make sure to let you know if Mrs. Patterson or another staff member from national TSA hasn't gotten in touch with me by this time next week. Thank you once again for responding, and good luck with national TSA :D!
  25.

  32. Hello Angus,
  33.
  34. First of all, I'd like to commend you on the lengths you've taken to keep your state delegation active- that's a huge project, and your dedication to TSA is truly remarkable! I have forwarded your message to Mrs. Mary Jo Patterson, the National TSA advisor, in regards to some of your more "technical" questions, such as regarding the regional placements attending nationals. I'm not sure if we've had a situation like this before, and we definitely haven't since I've been in TSA, so hopefully Mrs. Patterson will be able to provide some more information for you.
  35.
  36. As for some of my own thoughts:
  37.
  38. 1) You might choose to reconsider requiring your regional officers to attend the national conference. You could definitely require them to assist in planning state delegation meetings at nationals and things like that, but I know some chapters have a difficult time acquiring the funds to attend conferences. This might discourage students from smaller, less established chapters from running for regional office.
  39. 2) Historically, each state has had one singular state president representing the state at the national level. For example, your president last year, Ashvini, was invited to participate in several conference calls with national officers and other state presidents to share ideas and discuss events in your state. However, I see no reason why (if your two regional presidents can work it out) one or both of them couldn't serve in this capacity at the national level. The conference calls in your region (I believe California is in Region 5 with several other western states; you can check this on the national website under "Region Coordinators") are orchestrated by the national officer assigned to your region. In the past, we've had vice presidents attend, so I think it would be fine for your regional presidents to do so if they are functioning as state presidents. Typically, state presidents and officer teams will attend an in-person regional meeting at the national conference, in addition to an in-person meeting for state presidents. Again, I think this would be a non-issue with your set-up. Otherwise, having your team manage state affairs such as social media, etc. would really be at your and your team's discretion.
  40. 3. There is a communication network you should be able to access. Your state president from last year should be in some sort of group message with the other state presidents in your region as well as the national officer assigned to them. My region, Region 3, has a GroupMe. I'm sure if you ask Ashvini she would be willing to provide you with this information.
  41.
  42. I hope this helps with some of your more general questions. Let me know if Mrs. Patterson or another staff member from National TSA hasn't gotten in touch with you by this time next week, and I will reach out to her again. She should be able to help with things like previous records. Thank you!

  51. Hello National TSA officers!
  52.
  53. First off, I want to apologize if my email title is vague, because I didn't know how else to title it. (I'll also apologize because this email will be pretty lengthy, and I imagine you guys are all pretty busy juggling the responsibilities of preparing for the national conference and schoolwork).
  54.
  55. I'll introduce myself first. My name is Angus Jyu, and I'm part of the Monta Vista High School TSA chapter in California.
  56.
  57. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  58.
  59. As you guys might be aware of, California TSA currently has no plans to hold a state conference next year, primarily due to the lack of a "board of directors" (the conference was essentially run by a one-person team and general resources / planning that would make hosting a state conference feasible.
  60.
  61. The California TSA state advisor, Emily Bieber, had made this announcement at the conclusion of the state conference (3/24-3/25) closing ceremony, and stated to us that although California TSA would not have a state conference next year, this did not mean that California TSA was dying off, and that California TSA students / adults who wanted to take initiative could take this opportunity to start events such as regional conferences.
  62.
  63. However, ever since the conclusion of the state ceremony, there has been no activity by anyone from California TSA regarding moving things ahead / looking towards plans for next year. Having talked with all the state officers and chapter presidents at the state conference extensively and received their approval and encouragement for me to help step up, I've decided to take up the initiative to create plans for California TSA heading into the 2018-2019 schoolyear.
  64.
  65. For starters, I currently am in contacts with the presidents of all the chapters in the northern side of California, and I also planning to contact all the presidents of the chapters in the southern side of California. This way, I can preserve the communications between chapters in California and coordinate the plans between schools.
  66.
  67. Next, I conducted research on how regional officer teams in other California CTSOs worked. My primary focus was on DECA and FBLA, since I feel they were the most similar to TSA's structure and organization. California DECA is split into three sections, while California FBLA is split into six sections. Since California TSA is smaller, I think it would be best to split into two sections, Northern California TSA and Southern California TSA. Given that all of the 2017-2018 chapters seemed to be either from the Silicon Valley or the Los Angeles region, I think this is a proper divide.
  68.
  69. Next, I wanted to see how feasible it would be to host a regional conference at my school. I know all regional FBLAs in California host Section Leadership Conferences at high schools, so unlike this year where we hosted at a university campus, I think hosting on a high school conference would be much easier to coordinate. I asked my TSA chapter advisor if it'd be possible to host a conference at the school, and he said it probably would be possible. He even agreed to serve on a potential "board of directors", the main problem that was lacking for.
  70.
  71. Third, I developed roles / officer positions for both Northern California and Southern California TSA. Although California TSA had six state officers (the tradition is President / Vice President / Secretary / Treasurer / Sergeant-At-Arms / Reporter), I believe that because these regional teams are in its first year, they'll need more manpower. Silicon Valley DECA has about 14 regional officers and Bay Section FBLA has 7 regional officers, so I settled on a total of 8-9 regional officers. I wanted to create branches and officer positions according to what I believe were the different essential parts of running the regional team, so here are the positions I created for the regional team:
  72.
  73. Core Branch
  74. President
  75. Co-Executive VP
  76. Co-Executive VP
  77. Design Branch
  78. VP of Activities and Events
  79. VP of Promotional Media and Design
  80. Operations Branch
  81. VP of Chapter and Member Development
  82. VP of Finances
  83. VP of Secretarial and Historical Reporting
  84. Public Relations Branch
  85. VP of Network and Communications
  86. VP of Outreach
  87. VP of Promotion and Marketing
  88.
  89. I've created a detailed document where I detail all the officer responsibilities: California TSA - Regional Officer Responsibilities and Resources.
  90.
  91. Fourth, I've created regional team applications for both Northern California and Southern California TSA. These applications have been simplified from the California TSA applications, as unfortunately I believe we wouldn't have enough applicants if we kept the process the same. I simplified the application process to just two steps: electronic application and IRL application. I plan to send this out to all the club presidents so that all interested TSA members may apply.
  92.
  93. If you noticed in the applications, none of the core branch positions are available in the application. I plan to designate these positions to the regional TSA officers that demonstrate excellent work ethic, as stated in the regional officer responsibilities and resorces packet. This will give incentives to the regional officers to work hard and demonstrate initiative outside their designated responsibilities.
  94.
  95. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  96.
  97. Those were my plans regarding California TSA. I got them approved by the California State TSA advisor, Emily Bieber, who suggested to me that I contact the national TSA regarding how to implement these plans for next year (I wasn't sure of which national TSA staff I should contact, so I thought it'd be better to just contact you guys, and if you guys know which staff to forward to, feel free to forward my email to the right people!)
  98.
  99. Here are some of the things I want to address that apply specifically to the national level:
  100.
  101. A) If we do host the Northern California and Southern California regional TSA conferences, since there is no planned State California TSA conference, will the winners of each regional conference go to the national qualifiers, or does everyone regardless of performance qualify?
  102.
  103. B) If you guys noticed in the "Regional Officer Responsibilities and Resources" packet, my plan is to still have the 3 core regional officers (President and the two Executive VPs) from each of Northern California and Southern California TSA represent California TSA on the state level, so that way there is still a core state team that National TSA can communicate with. What are the duties / responsibilities that the state TSA team will need to fulfill in regards to national TSA (i.e. besides a state conference, what other responsibilities will the state team need to fulfill throughout the schoolyear)?
  104.
  105. C) Is there a communication network (i.e. Slack channel, Facebook group) of state TSA officers / presidents that I can join and ask fellow officers for advice on how to run the CTSO?
  106.
  107. D) If I want to run California TSA next year, is there anything else I need to prepare / do / accomplish aside from the things I've already mentioned above?
  108.
  109. E) Are there any resources from previous state TSA years (of any state) that I can access and use?
  110.
  111. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  112.
  113. That's all to update for now. Hopefully you approve of my efforts to get the regional TSAs going!
  114.
  115. Sincerely,
  116. Angus Jyu
