- In an age of mystery and superstition, how would the people of Gotham react to a weird creature of the night, a bat-garbed vigilante feared by the guilty and the innocent alike? The very first Elseworlds tale re-imagines the Dark Knight detective in Victorian times and pits him against the infamous murderer Jack the Ripper.
- In an alternative Victorian Age Gotham City, Batman begins his war on crime while he investigates a new series of murders by Jack the Ripper.
- Even though I enjoyed it, it felt like they were just trying to change the setting and characters, a bit (except for Batman).

Instead of going all nuts with characters, introducing new villain and gadgets, the whole movie relied on tired old "JACK THE RIPPER" bit that countless movies and TV shows have used. The only gadget you'll see Batman use is the claw, except more "Victorian" in design.

Overall, they could've done more, gone farther with the idea and the setting. But they settled for.. so-so..

Also, would it kill you to change the character of Batman every now and then DC? I know you've done it few times, but it's either "he is so nice" or "omg he kills people too". But that's it.

While we're at it, introduce new villains. Could've had a supernatural villain or a mechanical one, using Steampunk style. But nope.. JACK THE RIPPER HURRDURR!

Anyway, this is one of those movies which you won't come back to after the first viewing. Watch it, and move on.
- First of all, the credits for this great animated film go to the writers of the comic book, the first Elseworlds story, Brian Augustyn and Mike Mignola. The movie has to cut out some parts of the original story, put that is fine.

I really wanna say I wasn't so ambitious about this one, because some of the latest entries in the DCAU were kind of mediocre and I also miss the design and animation style of the old movies, like Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (best animated movie ever for me), Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker and TV series like Batman: TAS, Batman Beyond, Justice League etc. But after the movie presents this so raw violence and the mystery of who Jack the Ripper is, without giving away any clues, I was like "here we are, like old times".

The best thing about this film is it's twist. The villain's identity. Holy moly... I knew this was an alternate universe, but never saw that coming. We know that Harvey Dent is the well-known villain Two-Face, so we could think that in this universe he's just a different kind of bad guy with different motive. But, no. Commissioner James Gordon, one of the Dark Knight's most trusted and faithful allies, is revealed to be Jack the Ripper and I gotta say that Scott Patterson's performance was astonishing! Also, the moment we realize that Gordon is the killer is shocking and -yet again- so raw and scary for a comic book animated film.

There were some minor things I dislike a little bit, nothing serious, but enough to not let it be a perfect adaptation and get a 10 from me. I'll stick with 9, but the best taste after watching this movie is the belief that the DCAU is back on track with Batman, because most of the latest installments after The Dark Knight Returns were boring and there was nothing special (I'm mostly refering to the Damian Wayne trilogy). Can't wait for the next two films: Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay and The Death of Superman!
- Some originally speculated that "Batman: Gotham by Gaslight" would be merged with its sequel story "Master of the Future." However, it seems that the creative team at DC Animation has instead chosen to expand upon the original story with new scenes, characters and plot elements. Added characters include Selina Kyle; (Mrs.) Barbara Gordon; Harvey Bullock; Jason Todd; Hugo Strange; and Pamela Isley (as Ivy the Plant Lady). Batman: Gotham by Gaslight, originally published in 1989, is considered to be DC Comics' first Elseworlds story. "In ELSEWORLDS, heroes are taken from their usual settings and put into strange times and places--some that have existed, and others that can't, couldn't or shouldn't exist." - DC editorial copy. a5c7b9f00b
