- Q: How are you beating the game this quick? The actual speedrun takes 4 hours to complete
- A: I am using a gen 4-only glitch called tweaking. I am not knowledgeable enough to explain how it works in depth, but from what I know the game's map is made of 16x16 squares. Going on the areas between these squares(the"load lines")with specific movement does 1 of 3 things:
- 1. Deloads part of the map and loads another part of the map in(load tweak)
- 2. Deloads part of the map and creates a black area that we can load in by using a menu(void tweak)
- 3. Deloads certain NPCs(running tweak)
- There's another part to it which is a Diamond and Pearl exclusive glitch. If you enter a door to a building from the inside of the building after doing a void tweak, the game does its usual transition of moving into a building, but instead puts you out of bounds. Running in certain paths in this out of bounds area(the"void")lets you skip to certain parts of the game(in particular,to catch the legendaries before you even beat the game),but the most useful application of it for speedrunning is a path that lets us go straight to the Hall of Fame, saving a massive amount of time(3 hours)over a glitchless run, which usually takes about 4 hours. This glitch can't be done on Platinum or HeartGold/SoulSilver as you get stuck in The Void if you try to attempt it.
- Q: Wait, things seem different the way you're playing this, are you on a real DS?
- A: I indeed run on a real DS(DS Phat with a capture board modded in,shoutouts to Loopy)from now on with any DS(and GBA)game speedruns I do.
- Q: Why are you changing the date and time at the start and doing that funky movement?
- A: I am manipulating a Chimchar with very good stats(I don't know the IVs off the top of my head),Hidden Power Grass 69,and a Naive nature.
- On top of that,I also do extra movement after getting Chimchar to attempt to get no encounters. The no encounter movement in Diamond/Pearl in particular is quite hard, and I'm not the best at long stretches of specific movement like this,so I at least try to do it every run.
- Q: Why Diamond and not Pearl?
- A: Diamond is the cart I happen to own.
- Fun fact: Diamond is 3 frames faster in Glitchless
- Q: Hardest and/or most dangerous fights in this run?
- A: Bug Double in Eterna Forest: Pachirisu can be a massive troll and paralyze multiple times with Spark, eating through your Parlyz Heals in the process. He can also use Bide and hit you for a good amount of damage if you're not careful. The amount of trouble he causes gen 4 runners has granted him the nickname F***irisu. Beautifly can be dangerous as he has Gust which is super effective against you
- Gardenia: Roserade can troll with potential Stun Spore and Magical Leaf spam
- Q: Any HM slaves in this run?
- A: None are caught as Chimchar can learn both HMs needed for the run(Rock Smash and Cut),both of which turn out to be decent attacking moves for the run as well.
- In a alternative route I came up with that uses Piplup, you catch Bidoof before Jubilife as Piplup can't learn Rock Smash or Cut
- Q: Are you looking to get competitive with this run?
- A: I'm really not as Pokemon games aren't my main speedruns. Really the only goal I have that I think for me is kinda Farfetch'd(#PokemonPuns)is sub altabiscuit, which would require 1:05:43 or below. A new void path was found that saves a massive amount of time(5 minutes or so),so a low 1 hour should be easy.
