- Before 2006 hack and slash was an RPG subgenre with focus on combat and loot. Diablo being a prime example
- It was videogame youtubers that started to apply it to anything with melee combat because "it kinda fits lol". Putting games like Golden Axe, Diablo, Rune, Dynasty Warriors, DMC and all sort of completely different games that don't play even remotely same under a single banner is the same kind of idiocy as calling hockey, pool, tennis and golf "stick'n'smack" because you hit things with a "stick" in all of them.
- Note that at release DMC 1-3 and Bayonetta were officially described by their developers as "stylish action games", with term "hack and slash" nowhere to be seen, despite it existing for a decade prior. Warriors didn't have it either. Same with Enclave, Rune, Severance, and all other games like that - they all were "3rd person action" games.
- Diablo, Sacred, Dungeon Seige, Torchlight etc. were being called hack'n'slash from the start. In fact there was a hot debate on RPG forums about whether Icewind Dale is Hack'n'Slash or not, with its heavy emphasis on combat.
- Unfortunately wikipedia accepts words of any youtuber as an "official source" now and there were a few edit wars about it, so now even sidescrolling beatemups like Golden Axe, and all sorts of previously unrelated games bear the h'n's mark. If you don't believe me - go to any of the older game pages from before 2005-2006 period and look at their edit history.
- Because of the dumb zoomer youtubers the bastardisation of the name gained popularity and it became effectively meaningless, same as Roguelike that is now applied to every game with any sort of randomness and/or death-related progression, which goes against everything Roguelikes stand for.(I blame Totalbisquit for that one)
- Some idiots even place Diablo as "one of the first roguelikes" for fucks sake - because Wikipedia told them so, and it gets its sources from Youtube so it can't be wrong, right?
