- STAR RATING: ***** Saturday Night **** Friday Night *** Friday Morning ** Sunday Night * Monday Morning

'Westworld' is a futuristic amusement park unlike any other. For a hefty price, vacationers can revel in a simulated setting that matches which ever child like fantasy adventure they want to indulge in. Forthright, confident John (James Brolin) has convinced his friend, timid, humble Peter (Richard Benjamin) to come along with him on his chosen, wild west themed adventure. Peter eventually loosens up a bit and joins in the fun with his friend...until a malfunction causes the trip to turn nasty and Peter finds himself in a battle to the death with hay wired android Gunslinger (Yul Brynner.)

The late Michael Crichton is already immortalised in Hollywood history as the scribe behind such big screen science fiction classics as Jurassic Park and The Andromeda Strain, some other, less desirable stuff too like Congo and Timeline, but still the main source of inspiration behind some of the most iconic films in the sci fi genre. In 1973, he ventured into the realm of directing, as well as writing the screenplay to Westworld, a film that still holds a cult status to this day, if not quite regarded as a classic. And this is a fitting enough legacy for it to leave, a film that could be counted as one of the originals in some respects, but nearly forty years after it's release doesn't quite deliver with the maximum impact it could have when it first came out.

Performances wise, there is not an awful lot to critique on, centred as the plot is on just three main protagonists, each of whom are suitably convincing in their respective roles, Brolin eliciting an image of Christian Bale before his time in both looks and manner, but possibly the most impressive is the late Brynner as the mean, cold, emotionless killer cyborg, matching Schwarzenegger's Terminator for robotic malice.

With his first sci-fi fantasy adventure that skipped the literary route, Chricton here achieved the sort of thing he was nonetheless known for, a far fetched, eccentric madness, with an air of avant garde in both it's concept and it's plot devices. It drags on rather, taking ages to establish the story and get the action running, and I can't say it quite left a 'classic' effect on me. But I could see how it might be regarded as an original, and they're always the hardest to beat. ***
- A great movie about an amusement park with robots to entertain you and for you to experience life in the three different worlds. Yul Brynner as the gunfighter is truly excellent and yes, scary as hell.

To nitpick a movie from the 70s is truly childish. It was interesting, action/sci-fi. Well paced, reasonably written well. Great chase scene at the end, because if the Gunslinger was coming after me, I'd be scared. And, as far as I know, the first movie to mention a 'virus' in the machines.

You might as well complain about the bombs in Dark Star having intelligence. Why would a bomb need AI? But if it didn't, the ending wouldn't have been as interesting.

It's like complaining about movies from the 50s, like 'War of the Worlds' or 'Forbidden Planet'. They worked with what they had and had no ideal about what would or could be done in the future. OMG, 1984 didn't happen like Orwell said. Guess we should toss his book in the trash. Too many people nitpicking silly things. Ever heard of entertainment?

If your a REAL sci-fi fan, watch it. You won't be disappointed!
- Westworld is an excellent film, which combines solid entertainment, chilling topicality, and superbly intelligent serio-comic story values. Michael Crichton's original script is as superior as his direction.
- It could have been a prototype test for future models.

Or the scientist/mechanic could have been one of the machines that was self-aware and built the robots as was mentioned by the scientists. a5c7b9f00b
