  1. Adrian makes his way into the study. He gestures for Penelope to sit down in his chair. Assuming she did, the scholar sits on the desk in front of her. His bottom is pressed to the edge of the carefully constructed mahogany.
  2.
  3. He holds his hand forwards, his tome freeing itself from its leather constraints as it floats in front of the woman. It's pages flip open and turn rapidly, a gentle blue hue encompassing every single piece of parchment.
  4.
  5. Eventually, it stops.
  6.
  7. The top of the page reads: Spire Shards & Perfected Necromancy.
  8.
  9. There is a diagram on the page. A carefully constructed sketch detailing the beginnings of the schematics that would one day be used remove the flaws that came with spire shard resurrections.
  10.
  11. Adrian folds his arms across his chest.
  12.
  13. "Dominique and her peers' first mistake was assuming they could properly harness the full potential of a spire shard without a suitable device to serve as a catalyst."
  14.
  15. The sketch depicts eight pillars. There are measurements labeling either side, and notes detailing the materials it would be forged of. Eight pillars of tyrium were to be placed in the cardinal and ordinal directions.
  16.
  17. A more detailed sketch of the pillar revealed that each one had adamantite-laced ridged carved through the centers of each of them.
  18.
  19. "This is a containment field, Penelope. The tyrium and it's inherent nullification properties alongside the barrier functions of adamantite will provide us with a stable sphere of influence. This will, for all intents and purposes, effectively capture the essence of the spire shard and sure no residual mana can escape."
  20.
  21. The scholar smiled. He tugged at the bottom of the page. Clearly there was more to be said in regards to just what he had been drafting in that head of his. Alas, he wanted to give his fiancé time to respond.
  22.
  23. Time to review.
  24. (Adrian Montbell)
  25.
  26. Penelope sits down, folding her hands in front of her. She's quick to feast on the information she's presented with. She reads over the page several times, and she's chewing on her lip, trying to piece everything together and find any questions or comments she had.
  27.
  28. There was a flaw.
  29.
  30. She looks up, her gaze piercing Adrian.
  31.
  32. "If there is a tyrium barrier surrounding the spire shard, how do you suppose anything will escape the shard at all? What I mean is, how will we utilize the replicating power of it if nothing inside the barrier can get out? What is your solution to that, Adrian? Have I missed it somewhere?"
  33. (Penelope)
  34.
  35. He guides her finger over the page.
  36.
  37. "The pillars themselves are merely supporting structures. They are in place to ensure that the spire shard's sphere of influence does not escape the confines of the area outlined by the pillars."
  38.
  39. He moves her finger towards the runic arrays encircling the base of each of the eight pillars. Each one was the same, but Penelope would notice the intricate nature of the combined shapes, symbols and correlating lines.
  40.
  41. "Notice that the pillars are not placed directly next to each other, or directly next to where the spire shard will be placed. They are all equidistant from the incenter of the circle that their placement forms."
  42.
  43. She'd notice the measurements, the scholar pointing them out once again. They seemed to be at a perfect distance. Not too far, not too close. Just the right amount of space was offered to accentuate the spire shards estimated sphere of influence, while also preventing it from escaping.
  44.
  45. Adrian guides her fingers over the section of the individualized, singular diagram off to the lower section of the page which showed the pillar in closer detail.
  46.
  47. "These adamantite laced ridges are aligned to coincide with the array connecting the eight smaller ritual circles surrounding the bases of each pillar. This is the primary means of which the barrier will be erected, Penelope." He pauses, crossing his arms again.
  48. (Adrian Montbell)
  49.
  50. "Ohhhh."
  51.
  52. Penelope nods, slowly. She looks over the page again, and everything seems to click. She seems a little distracted, but with some extra effort, she's able to internalize the info.
  53.
  54. "I see, I see. I'm not sure why I was under the influence that we were erecting a tyrium barrier... that wouldn't be probable, anyway. Yes, this seems very plausible, Adrian."
  55.
  56. She looks up at him, eyes glimmering. She looks really excited! She's almost fidgeting in her chair.
  57.
  58. "I'd love to see you employ this. Do you believe that we could attempt something similar with another magically potent material?"
  59. (Penelope)
  60.
  61. He flips the page.
  62.
  63. There seems to be a large platform sketched onto it. Its measurements are completely adherent to the ones listed on the page prior. The platform, if constructed as per the schematics exactly, would fit into the bottom of the eight pillars.
  64.
  65. There were slight circular indentations in the spaces where each pillar would be placed. The notes on the margin adjacent to the diagram specified that said indentations would be carved specifically to fit the accentuate the runic eight runic arrays and the connecting outlier array.
  66.
  67. "But of course. We'll need a suitable center piece to support the complexities of these runic functions. Which is why the base of the entire device will be forged entirely of orchilacum."
  68.
  69. He guides her finger along the diagram.
  70.
  71. The absolute center of the base had a body shaped-indentation. It was one of those 'one size fits all' sort've deals.
  72.
  73. "This is where the body will be placed. As you can see, the carvings of the base where the runes will go bleed into this portion of the device."
  74. (Adrian Montbell)
  75.
  76. "Brilliant, Adrian. Really."
  77.
  78. Her stare fixes to the page again, and she devours it all - words, drawings, ideas, everything. If it came from Adrian, it was wonderful, and she's not satisfied until she had it all.
  79.
  80. She looks up at him. That interest, that fervor in her eyes - it was something he only saw when they were engaged in such an intellectual conversation. She licks her lips, and looks back down to the diagram.
  81.
  82. "This is a lot of materials, but I know that we have... an ungodly amount of tyrium, because of Istvan. If we could convince him to part with some of it..."
  83.
  84. She pauses. They already convinced Rebecca to part with a spire shard. That should be easy.
  85.
  86. "We can both work on the runewriting together to get it done faster. The orichalcum is a challenge, but it's doable..." She trails off, muttering to herself.
  87. (Penelope)
