  1. >"AAAAIEEEEE"
  2. >That sounded like Rarity
  3. >You should probably go investigate
  4. >Trotting through the town, you notice that most ponies seem to be hiding
  5. >Just like when Zecora showed up
  6. >Moving a bit faster now, you’re almost bowled over when Rarity comes running in the opposite direction
  7. >”Oh, Twilight! Twilight, it’s horrible! There’s these awful monsters swarming my Boutique!”
  8. >You try to calm her down, but she’s in full panic mode
  9. >It’s no use, so you leave her to sob dramatically and head for her store
  10. >There couldn’t be actual monsters, could they?
  11. >Surely there’d be a lot more screaming
  12. >Well, time to see for yourself
  13. >Carousel Boutique lies in front of you, in all its gaudy magnificence
  14. >There’s nothing wrong with the building
  15. >Great, are they invisible monsters now?
  16. >As you get closer to the Boutique, something seems off
  17. >Patches of the wall look like they’re made of fur
  18. >That’s not right
  19. >Maybe giant balls of fur got glued to the walls?
  20. >Maybe—
  21. >HOLY CELESTIA IT MOVED
  22. >You freeze, hoping that whatever it is didn’t notice you
  23. >Hours pass
  24. >In your mind
  25. >It doesn’t move again
  26. >Perhaps you should get closer
  27. >You ignore all the screeching alarms in your head and slowly inch forwards
  28. >The fuzz resolves into a more distinct form
  29. >It almost looks like a pony
  30. >Granted, one that was dipped into a vat of glue and coated in fur, then stuck to the wall
  31. >You’re within touching distance now
  32. >Should you go for it?
  33. >Of course
  34. >For science
  35. >You reach out a shaking hoof
  36. >Sweat is raining off your face
  37. >Your hoof slowly sinks into the creature
  38. >It’s so soft, like a cloud
  39. >For a moment, nothing happens
  40. >Then it squeaks, and moves away from your hoof
  41. >You jump back and fall on your rear
  42. >It moves again, and you can see a face
  43. >An alien face, but one eerily similar to that of an everyday pony
  44. >You shiver involuntarily
  45. >You try to maintain eye contact without shaking too much
  46. “H-hello?”
  47. >You stutter out
  48. >Hopefully it understood you
  49. >Hopefully noise wouldn’t make it attack you
  50. >Hopefully—
  51. >It turned back around, ignoring you
  52. “Um, what are you?”
  53. >You ask
  54. >It doesn’t respond
  55. “Uh, sorry, I meant who are you?”
  56. >Still no response
  57. >You stand there, trying to think of what to do next
  58. “You’re, uh, disturbing my friend. And her business. And the whole town.”
  59. >Still nothing
  60. “Please, it would be very helpful if you could respond.”
  61. >It occurred to you that it might not understand you
  62. >Right then, time to turn to the old fallback
  63. >Magic
  64. >Revving up the ol’ horn, you prepare to cast a translation spell
  65. >You’re distracted by a sudden outburst of squeaking
  66. >Every single one of those creatures was squeaking for dear life, moving about in a panic
  67. >It made the Boutique look like it was infested with maggots
  68. >Giant, furry maggots
  69. >You let the magic fade, and the creatures gradually settle down again
  70. >Great
  71. >Time to sit down and think
  72. ><
  73. >”There, Applejack! Can’t you see them?”
  74. >You turn around to see Applejack, with Rarity hiding behind her
  75. >”Howdy there, Twilight!”
  76. >”Do something, Applejack! I need to continue working!”
  77. “Do you know what those creatures are, Applejack?”
  78. >She narrows her eyes at the nearest ball of fluff
  79. >”Hoo boy. Looks like you’ve got an infestation of Moth ponies, Rares.”
  80. >Rarity faints onto a couch that definitely wasn’t there before
  81. “They’re not dangerous, though? They haven’t done much since I got here.”
  82. >”Nah, they mostly sleep during the day. They’ll head off when night falls.”
  83. >”Can’t you remove them now~?”
  84. >Rarity whines, having recovered from her “faint”
  85. >”Sorry Rares, not a good idea.”
  86. >”Ooh, why? Do they get angry and suck out your insides using their proboscis?”
  87. >And there’s Pinkie
  88. >”You don’t always have to pop out of nowhere, Pinkie. And no, they won’t suck out your insides, where’d you get that ridiculous idea?”
  89. >Applejack responds, the first to recover from Pinkie’s appearance
  90. >Pinkie just hops in place, a silly smile plastered on her face
  91. “What do they do then, Applejack?”
  92. >You ask, curiosity bubbling over
  93. >”They cry at you.”
  94. >Even Pinkie freezes, mid bounce
  95. >Before you can say anything, Applejack cuts you off
  96. >”Yep. We had several show up on our deck for a day awhile back. Big Mac decided to remove one of them by picking her up and putting her somewhere else, and she just started bawling like there was no tomorrow. Granny nearly took his tail off when she came out to investigate, heh.”
  97. “That’s—”
  98. >”So sad! She must have been terrified!”
  99. >You look at Pinkie, surprised that she’s making sense for once
  100. >Rarity’s still trying to hide behind Applejack, who’s trying to leave
  101. >”See you girls later. Rarity, please let go. I’m not gonna say it twice.”
  102. >Applejack manages to extricate herself from Rarity’s grip and starts walking off
  103. >Pinkie starts muttering something about a night party and lasers and disappears as well
  104. >There’s just a quivering Rarity left
  105. >You turn around to look at the Moth ponies
  106. >Sunset should be in about four hours, if your internal clock is correct
  107. >It should be enough time to go back to the library and create a checklist for tonight
  108. >You start heading home
  109. >”But what am I to do?”
  110. >You hear Rarity say
  111. “You heard Applejack, they’re harmless. Just go inside and forget about them.”
  112. >Rarity turns back towards her Boutique
  113. >”B-but they clash with the drapes!”
  114. >end<
