  1. Hey everyone. I'm Rob, and I've known since Mak our freshman year of college. Now he's married. I'm still getting used to it.
  2.
  3. I think tradition says that I get to stand up here and tell one embarrassing story before I move onto the sweet stuff. And I've got some stories to choose from.
  4.
  5. I met MaK on a certain floor of a certain dorm (that just got knocked down), and our old RA Michael - sitting over there - has a theory that that floor was God or fate putting together as many stupid irresponsible people in one place as possible. Just the other day, right after Mak's wedding, the three of us were swapping explosion stories. That means stories of things that we all blew up.
  6.
  7. Mak's story was the best. Apparently, years ago, MaK and his cousin took an old metal refrigerator to the woods and rigged it to explode. Nobody was hurt, but it did take out a nearby tree.
  8.
  9. I possibly got MaK in trouble by making him tell that story the other night, because Megan hadn't heard it before. I liked her response - she just said "be smarter!"
  10.
  11. I want to reassure Megan's family that to my knowledge, MaK hasn't blown anything else up in at least a year.
  12.
  13. But here's the thing. We've all had our dumb moments, and in his younger days MaK might have shown questionable judgment when it comes to exploding fridge safety, but I've never known him to show anything but the best judgment when it comes to the people he cares about - how he treats them and who he picks to care about that way.
  14.
  15. MaK doesn't hold much back. That's not a bad thing. It just means he usually says what he's thinking. So when he decided he felt that way about Megan, about four hours after meeting her, I knew about it instantly. I'm pretty sure he told me on the drive back from the event where he met her. And he probably also told me the next day, and the day after that.
  16.
  17. Fortunately for him, this is a new phone, so I can't really embarrass him by reading those texts.
  18.
  19. But maybe he wouldn't care. When you find somebody special, you want everybody to know.
  20.
  21. Thing about me, I like to gossip. When two friends get together, I like to go to all of my friends, all of their friends, my mom, and be like, oh my god! Did you hear that Dave and Stacy are, like, a couple now? SO weird!
  22.
  23. Gossiping about MaK and Megan wasn't very satisfying. Because whenever I went to people and said that, they were like, oh, MaK and Megan got together? Oh yeah, that makes sense. Of course they did.
  24.
  25. All they'd say was, have you noticed how happy MaK and Megan have been lately?
  26.
  27. Except that's a lie. People would say, have you noticed how happy Megan has been lately. They'd say, have you noticed how NICE MaK has been lately.
  28.
  29. That's what happens when someone makes you really happy. It brings out the best in you, and everybody notices, even if it doesn't make very fun drama to gossip about.
  30.
  31. One more quick story, just because I thought it was cute. And I kind of have to wing this one because it happened yesterday. We were driving here from Chadron, MaK, Megan and I, and we stopped at a rest stop, and Mak was supposed to get Megan a bag of potato chips. And Mak forgot Megan's bag of potato chips. All the boyfriends and husbands out there know how serious this is.
  32.
  33. And I have to say, guys, they quibbled about that bag of chips for two hours. And of course it wasn't serious arguing, it's the kind you do when you're not mad, you think it's funny, and you know ribbing each other about something silly will make a long drive pass more quickly. You could listen to the radio, but you'd rather hear each other's voices. And that's the kind of humor and ability to just click and work well together that I think matters. Your partner forgets your bag of chips and in ten minutes you're glad they did because you got so much mileage out of it. That's something that can carry you together through an eight hour road trip ... or through a marriage that lasts through years and years, with its ups and downs.
  34.
  35. It was awesome to see that on our road trip yesterday. And it's something that I think we all see every time we look at MaK and Megan. This is the part where we all get to drink, guys, to MaK and Megan and a lot of years together.
