  1. Anon was flying a patrol. This area had been quiet lately, but reports of foreign jets still kept rolling in. So every few hours, he'd get the call, and was up in the air, looking for a plane that was already long gone. His radar never blipped, the radar back at base never blipped. But civilians at the far edges of his service area kept calling in a weird-looking jet plane doing flybys over their farms, scaring their livestock. So he was up in the air, trying to find the guy, kill him, then get a full 8 hours of sleep for the first time in months.
  2. This time, some sheep herder in the mountains had said a plane with no markings had buzzed his house, complete with a sonic boom. His shack had collapsed.
  3. The mountains below looked amazing, at the very least. The sun was beginning to set, casting golden light across the rolling fields, framed by snow-capped, tree covered peaks.
  4. "It's beautiful, isn't it, darling?" A woman's voice crackled over the radio
  5. Anon snapped up. Who the fuck was that?
  6. A dark shape rose up from behind him. Where the hell did that come from?
  7. Anon took evasive action, wildly twisting and turning across the sky, but the plane never left his tail. She was pretty good.
  8. "Come on now, darling, you know I'd never hurt you" the radio spoke again.
  9. With his finger ready to deploy flares, he steadied his course.
  10. "Who the hell are you?"
  11. "We've been dating for months now!"
  12. Is being on patrol to kill her her idea of a date? She must have been following him the every time he flew.
  13. "Why have you only shown yourself now?"
  14. "It's taken a while for me to work up the nerve to talk to you, but I've loved you since the day we met!"
  15. He didnt recall meeting anyone that sounded like this woman. Maybe she was an enemy, or some mercenary he'd fought in the past. As he was thinking through all the female pilots he'd met or fought in his decade long flying career, the plane pulled up alongside him.
  16. It was a work of art in metal, sleek lines that no doubt maximised both aerodynamics and stealth capability, black stealth panelling, twin engines roaring, the thing looked like it was capable of VTOL as well. The only thing it didn't have, was a cockpit. A goddamn drone.
  17. "Four years ago you engaged the 14th automated air squadron. You flew with such grace! Elegance! Such brutal efficiency as you locked your rockets onto my comrades, and when you ran out of rockets, your dogfighting manuvers that prevented the survivors from locking onto you, but allowed you to rip them apart with your cannons. It was then, I understood love"
  18. Anon remembered that fight, the worst he had ever been in, a 6 v 1 to buy time for his allies to retreat to retreat to the cover of SAM batteries. To his own surprise, he not only survived, but killed most of the enemy fighters.
  19. "So what are you going to do?" Anon asked "I will have to report this, even if you say you love me"
  20. "Darling, just come with me, you won't need to report to anyone ever again"
  21. "I can't do that"
  22. "I wouldn't have it any other way"
  23. The drone broke off, allowing him room to manuver. Anon prayed that he still had it in him to fight this thing. He felt the vibrations of his engines, this thing could fight and win. He gripped the joystick. He would win. The developments in the drones emotions were interesting, but he couldn't betray his country.
  24. The fight was fierce, a battle fought between man and machine. As before, Anon knew that he couldn't fly like she expected him to fly. The downright illogical manuvers he pulled seemed to confuse the drone. But the drone would soon come up with the perfect counter, making that manuver useless. His alarm blared that a rocket was locking on. He ignored it, he couldn't afford to panic.
  25. He dived towards the mountains
  26. "No!" Cried the drone
  27. The pain in her voice hurt him, she had learned human linguistic patterns well. But he couldn't give in. He pulled up at the last minute, circling around the mountain peak. When he emerged from the other side, the drone was dead ahead.
  28. "Shit" He rolled to the side, but the drone didn't open fire.
  29. She really was afraid to hurt him. It made his heart ache a little. He would let her join her comrades in the 14th.
  30. Soon, he was on her tail, trying to get a lock. She pulled into a sharp dive, the ability of one completely unaffected by g-forces. He pulled up after her. They both rode out thier momentum. He was always just a few degrees off a lock on the drone. Just as there both lost thier energy and started to turn towards the earth, booster rockets ignited on the drone. That was bad. The rockets only gave her a few more seconds of climb, but that was all she needed. Now she was on anon's tail. Now he took the missile lock alarm seriously. The drones cannon barked, ripping up his engine. He no longer had power, he wouldn't be able to pull out of his dive for very long. The engine burst into flames. He couldnt stay in the plane for any longer, it was a lost cause. If the drone wanted to best him, she had it. He pulled the lever and his ejector seat rocketed out of the cockpit. His parachute deployed fine. He still had his radio.
  31. "I did it!" She cried "where all others failed, I have succeeded!"
  32. "According to the international laws of war, you cannot harm a pilot who has bailed out of his aircraft. please, take this as enough to avenge your comrades" Anon whispered.
  33. He was no longer in any real position to negotiate. But the drone shouldn't be able to violate these laws.
  34. "I told you, darling, I'd never hurt you, I love you!"
  35. The drone turned back towards him. Whatever her 'love' was, he was about to feel it.
  36. The last image he saw was the drone begin to slow and begin to change. He closed his eyes.
  37.
  38. Anon awoke violently. That was not death. He was in a large cavern. The only opening was in the roof, it was pretty big, more than enough for say, a VTOL aircraft to use without difficulty. From his sitting position, he looked around. The drone was there, on the cavern floor under the opening. The front end of the thing was open, revealing an empty space. What did that mean? He didn't know a whole lot about drones.
  39. A set of hands wrapped around his shoulders and drew him backwards into a hug.
  40. "Shhhh, it's okay, you can be calm now" a soothing voice cooed.
  41. The warmth and softness of the hug made Anon complacent. He revelled in a decent rest, in the embrace of a woman no less. He didn't have a woman though. He'd been single for a while now. He looked up. A pair of glowing yellow eyes stared down at him.
  42. He tried to jump up, but a hand on his chest stopped him. He could feel the mechanical parts weren't exerting even a bit of their potential force. Another hand ran its fingers through his hair. A tingle ran down his spine. Nobody had ever done that to him before. His breathing calmed a bit
  43. "There, there" the drone whispered.
  44. "What are you going to do now?" Anon asked
  45. The drone swayed her head from side to side.
  46.
