vs. goons

Duffy laughed and showed his teeth. No Neck and Mullet exchanged another look. While we’d been talking I’d been slowly edging forward, a few inches at a time. Almost imperceptibly. I was now less than six feet from the two of them. They’d both just realised it.

“You two,” said Duffy, “show Mr. Laukkanen out.”

I was pretty sure Mullet had a piece, because his first move was to reach behind his back, but by the time he did I’d punched him in the throat. He went down choking and I turned my attention to No Neck who came in low with his chin tucked behind his left shoulder and his fists up. I dropped an elbow down in an arc toward the top of his head and he put his forearms up to block which opened up his face for my rising knee. I heard bone buckle and he went down in a heap and I went back to Mullet who was still bent over choking. I hammered the second knuckle of my right middle finger into the base of his skull right where it connects to the spine and he lay down next to No Neck and stayed still. I looked at Duffy. He opened his eyes wide and nodded, impressed.

“You’re right. I need to hire some better guys.”
