- Outlast was the game that not only spurred on my love of horror games, but also spurred on my speedrunning hobby, with me running the game(albeit on and off)for 2 and a half years as of right now(since July 2014),and it's such a fun speedrun game to this day. Now, here we are almost 3 years after I completed the first game, and the sequel has been unleashed on the interwebs. Below I will detail what I like about the game and a few things(speed running and casually)that I just plain don't like. This is keeping in mind that I know the plot of the game and have seen the game from beginning to end by watching several streams of it from Outlast 1 runners and a YouTube playthrough by Markiplier. I have not played it myself as of writing this,so this is my general thoughts having seen the whole game.
- -Soundtrack
- The soundtrack is amazing. I'd actually put the soundtrack above Outlast 1's soundtrack because of how good it is. The country type of style it went for fit in really well with the cult village setting.
- -Setting
- It was good as well. I haven't played the game to get the full idea, but I like how it toyed with a cult village kind of setting.
- -Plot
- The plot is very confusing lmao. It's kind of hard to get a grasp on initially, but looking at the recordings and documents gives you a good idea on what it's about. The tl;dr version is Murkoff is experimenting with mind control(like their experimentation in Outlast 1 with nanomachines and the Morphogenic Engine)on these villagers, causing them to go so insane they invent 2 religious sects(1 satanic and 1 extremist Christian),and Blake slowly goes insane along with them. The ending was not a satisfying ending at all because we don't really get to see what happens to Blake, but other than that I think it was cool with Murkoff making a return and how it messed with religious themes.
- -New Mechanics
- The healing mechanic was neat, but oh my god the stamina mechanic is so bad. Not only does it result in very unfair and difficult to avoid deaths(especially on higher difficulties),it makes the speedrun terrible to optimize. Bunnyhopping is unfortunately gone from the demo,so movement might dumb to optimize too.
- -Overall,pretty good game, but the unsatisfying ending and stamina mechanic are my main complaints.
- Plans for speedruns of the game:
- -I will speedrun Any% and 100% as I've originally planned. Depending on if glitches are found,I will also run any glitched categories that come up.
- -Relating to 100%,it might be a very long run as there's 105 total collectibles in the game, and Any% with very early strats is just over 2 hours
- -Speedruns of this game might be not fun in some ways. As said, the stamina mechanic just makes this game so slow in a speedrun, because continuing without having limited stamina getting in the way basically means running to the next checkpoint and reloading to get your stamina back, and that's assuming that you don't die a dumb death to an enemy.
- -While it's hard to say because it isn't a broken speedrun yet,I will submit it to future marathons, mostly smaller online marathons
