- Compound Adjectives: two or more words that together make a single description for a noun
- (freshly squeezed) orange juice - “freshly” describes “squeezed”
- fresh (squeezed orange juice) - “fresh” describes the juice
- 10 (dollar bills) = you have 10 bills, each is a $1 bill
- (10-dollar) bills = you have some bills, each is a $10 bill
- I teach twenty two-year-olds. (20 children, each 2 years old)
- I teach twenty-two-year-olds. (all the people I teach are 22 years old)
- We don’t say, “a made vase”.
- We can say, “handmade vase”, “locally made vase”, “machine-made vase”.
- (The vase was made by hand. It was made locally. It was made by machine.)
- We don’t say, “a winning movie”.
- We can say, “an award-winning movie”.
- (The movie won an award or several.)
- I have a three-legged dog.
- (“Leg” isn’t a verb, but this is how we say the dog has three legs.)
- (This works with body parts, but not most other things.)
- A brokenhearted woman.
- If it’s not a body part, you can’t add -ed for the compound adjective:
- I can have a five-legged table, but I write a five-page article.
- (The article has five pages, but we don’t use plurals in adjectives.)
- ---
- In general, we don’t use plurals when we modify nouns, even with other nouns:
- There are two shoes in the shoebox. (not “shoesbox”)
- I have two shoeboxes.
- I brush my teeth with a toothbrush. (not “teethbrush”)
- I bought four toothbrushes.
- ---
- an award-winning marketing project (remember, the LAST noun is the head noun)
- a big box of shoes (prepositional phrases go after the head noun)
- a big shoebox

- the windows of the house

- the car door = a specific (car door) (“car door” = the type of door that goes on a car)
- a Fanta bottle = a bottle for Fanta
- a bottle of water = a bottle that has water in it
- ---
- a lethal-looking sword = a sword that looks lethal (active)
- a machine-made vase = a vase that was made by machine (passive)
- a vase-making machine = a machine that makes vases (active)
- ---
- BREAK
- ---
- Body parts in compound adjectives get -ed endings (three-legged, flat-toothed, one-eyed)
- In compound nouns, they follow the usual rules (legwarmers, toothbrush, eyeglasses)
- If wine glasses are where you put your wine, what are eyeglasses for?
- If olive oil is made from olives, what is baby oil?
- If a wire brush is made from wires, what is a toothbrush?
- (You sometimes have to guess from the context about the structure of compound nouns.)
