  1. Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga Version Differences (updated from altabiscuit's original post).
  2.
  3. -This pastebin lists the differences between the Japanese and English versions as it relates to speedruns.
  4. For general version differences refer to http://themushroomkingdom.net/mlss_j2e.shtml
  5.
  6. -The only cartridge version is 1.0. The differences are based on region differences (USA, EUR, or JPN)
  7.
  8. -EUR and USA are practically the same mechanic wise however, EUR is the fastest version for Any% and Glitchless due to using Spanish text (fastest text) and having less/no lag during some glitches (void barrel).
  9. JPN is the fastest version for All Bosses due to having different glitches (Barrel Clipping).
  10.
  11. -Wii U Virtual Console versions have little to no differences to the GBA cartridges with the exception of a frame of input delay and minor insignificant lag differences.
  12.
  13. -Playing on the Gameboy Player (not Gameboy Interface) introduces GBP enhancements for the game which changes the glitch sequences and makes it more difficult/inconsistent. To avoid this, plug any cable into the front of the Gameboy Player. There is also an extra frame of input delay.
  14.
  15. From now on, the USA and EUR versions will be referred to as the English Version.
  16.
  17. - Most HP, EXP, Coin, and Item Drop Values for bosses are different between the two versions but these differences are accounted for in the routes.
  18.
  19. -- General Route differences --
  20.
  21. - Barrel clipping is Japanese only
  22. - English version can clip through rocks but it is slower and more likely to softlock
  23. - Mush badge more expensive and less powerful on Japanese version
  24. - English route does not farm Knockback Bros. This leaves the final Cackletta fight up to some RNG, but it still faster.
  25. - English version is the fastest version ultimately due to higher damage from the red pepper glitch and better mush badge.
  26.
  27.
  28. -- Stats --
  29.
  30. **Starting BP:
  31.
  32. JAPAN
  33. Mario 14 BP
  34. Luigi 16 BP
  35.
  36. ENGLISH
  37. Mario 10 BP
  38. Luigi 10 BP
  39.
  40. Syrups are required for the early boss fights on the English version.
  41.
  42.
  43. **Stat Progression:
  44.
  45. -Attack progression is higher on the English version.
  46. -BP progression is higher on the Japanese version.
  47. -Level up bonuses are higher on average on the English version.
  48.
  49.
  50.
  51. -- Splash Bros Advanced --
  52.
  53. JP: Requires 20 uses
  54. EN: Requires 19 uses
  55.
  56. Technically the English version needs 20 uses, but the Bros Attack tutorial counts towards the Splash Advanced counter which effectively reduces it to 19.
  57.
  58.
  59. -- Mush Badge --
  60.
  61. The Mush Badge works the same in both games but it is much weaker on the Japanese version.
  62.
  63. JAPANESE (Cost: 238 coins)
  64. 0.078 - Mushroom
  65. 0.098 - Super Mushroom
  66. 0.117 - Ultra Mushroom
  67. 0.199 - Max Mushroom
  68.
  69. ENGLISH (Cost: ~110 coins, will vary based on level and Stache stat)
  70. 0.199 - Mushroom & Super Mushroom
  71. 0.250 - Ultra Mushroom
  72. 0.299 - Max Mushroom
  73.
  74.
  75.
  76. -- Bosses --
  77.
  78. **Tolstar
  79. Tolstar has higher DEF on English version. The following damage numbers assume both bros are level 3.
  80.
  81. JAPAN
  82. Splash Bros: Between 6-8 damage depending on Mario's stats
  83. Bounce Bros: Always 6 damage
  84.
  85. ENGLISH
  86. Splash Bros: Always 7 damage
  87. Bounce Bros: Always 5 damage
  88.
  89. English version takes one more turn because a Syrup needs to be used.
  90.
  91.
  92. **Hoohoroos
  93. Hoohoroos has higher DEF on Japanese version and requires good stats to kill fast. English version needs less turns on average to win this fight but has to use a Syrup due to less BP.
  94.
  95. **Dragohoho
  96. The English version on average will have higher attack stats, but will usually require a Syrup to be used during the fight, depending on stats this can take 4-5 turns. The Japanese version can kill in 4 turns but requires high level up bonuses.
  97.
  98. English version saves time when Advance! and a kill are done on the same turn because both animations happen at the same time.
  99.
  100.
  101. **Queen Bean
  102. JP: 100 HP
  103. EN: 120 HP
  104.
  105. This makes no difference in the speedrun because Mario does more damage on the English version to make up for it. Assuming favorable stats, both versions should take four turns to kill Queen Bean.
  106.
  107.
  108. **Popple & Rookie**
  109. English version saves time due to Rookie attacking less and doing more damage on average.
  110.
  111.
  112. **Popple & Birdo
  113. Japanese fight is slower due to weaker Mush Badge, but does not have to do a rock skip to get here.
  114.
  115.
  116. **Bowletta
  117. JP: 700
  118. EN: 500
  119.
  120. English version is faster due to stronger Mush Badge and less HP.
  121.
  122. **Cackletta
  123. JP: 800
  124. EN: 1200
  125.
  126. Japanese version is faster because it uses Knockback Bros Advance infinite to kill.
  127. English version is slower due to 2 cycle kill, but it gains a lot of time earlier in the run by not having to farm Knockback Bros. Due to 2 cycle kill this fight is heavily dependent on RNG for a good time.
  128.
  129.
  130. -- Glitches and Skips --
  131.
  132.
  133. **Barrel Clipping
  134. Version: Japanese only
  135. Used for: Early Fungitown, Big Skip, Bowser Castle Skip
  136.
  137. -Early Fungitown, Big Skip, and Bowser Castle Skip is faster with barrel clipping
  138.
  139. **Barrel Storage (using a real barrel)
  140. Version: Both
  141. Used for: Sign glitch
  142.
  143.
  144. **Sign glitch
  145. Version: Both
  146. Used for: Early Firebrand
  147.
  148.
  149. **Action Command glitch
  150. Version: Both
  151. Used for: Everything
  152.
  153. Slightly faster on English version because L does not need to be pressed as many times.
  154.
  155.
  156. **Hat Clipping
  157. Version: Both
  158. Used for: Early Fungitown, Big Skip, Rock Skip (EN)
  159.
  160.
  161. **Rock Skip
  162. Version: Both, but not needed on Japanese
  163. Used for: Big Skip, Early Fungitown
  164.
  165. Clips through rocks which require higher level hammers to break. Japanese version does this with barrel clipping and is faster.
  166.
  167.
  168. **Bowser Castle Skip
  169. Version: Both, but behaves differently on both versions
  170. Used for: Skipping Bowser's Castle
  171. Japanese version is faster due to barrel clipping.
  172. Timer event stored from HooHoo Mountain soul collecting game.
  173.
  174.
  175. **Red Peppers Glitch
  176. Version: English only
  177. Used for: Cackletta fight
  178. Makes the POW bonus of Red Peppers permanent if the bro you use it on dies and is revived with a 1UP shroom before the peppers effect wears off. This also works with Green Peppers but is not useful in a speedrun.
