  1. Professions in the game industry.
  2. (Greetings, Hello, etc.) my name is Aleksey, I am student of VSU AMM faculty, 2 year. Today I would like to tell you about professions in game industry.
  3. Introductory slide:
  4. For many people, game development is something incomprehensible. Most of them misunderstand the game development process as a whole. That’s why today I would like to tell you about the main professions in this IT industry.
  5. Slide 1:
  6. To begin with, you need to understand that there are different companies and each is involved in a certain direction of development. I think everyone knows at least two categories: developers and publishers. The first one is directly involved in the development of games, the second one is responsible for market launches and advertisement of games.
  7. Slide 2:
  8. Also, besides them, there are many more companies that are engaged in activities close to the game development such as: localization of products into other languages, writing music and audio effects, external testing of products, etc. I would like to dwell in more detail on those who are directly involved in the creation of games - employees of companies - developers.
  9. Slide 3:
  10. Companies which is responsible for creating games, come in a variety of sizes. In large studios such as Rockstar (2000+ employees), CD Projekt Red (1111 employees), Santa Monica Studio (250+ employees), id Software (200 employees) were expensive AAA (high-end development) games are created. Medium companies usually consist of 100-200 employees in the Russian development market of such companies as Kefir, NX Studios, Rocket Jump, etc. If we talk about small companies. In such companies, everyone is often working on the same project.
  11. Slide 4:
  12. Since we have analyzed how the game dev industry looks like, what types of development there are, then let's take a look at the specialists who are needed to create projects.
  13. The first category of specialists is programmers. All video games are software products; therefore, creating such thing is usually difficult without programmer. There are exceptions when the game is created on Buildbox or other platforms but great majority of games are created with use of such or another programming language for example, C#, Java, C ++. As you already understood, programmers are divided according to the language with which they can work. In addition to this, programmers are divided into server and client programmers. The first one is in charge of the server logic, the second one is responsible for preparing the game client. Usually, they work not just with code, but in some kind of engine. For example, Unreal Engine, Cocos 2d, or Unity.
  14. Slide 5:
  15. The second group is artists. The creators of the game's appearance paint in the most incredible visual styles. And the profession itself has a lot of diversity inside. There are sculptors, 3D modelers, texturers working with three-dimensional graphics. We must not forget about the specialists in animation and special effects. In addition to them, UI designers play a role, designing the game interface: icons, windows, decoration, and functional elements. And the artists that is responsible for doing other marketing materials. There are a lot of specialists in this area.
  16. Slide 6:
  17. The work of game designers is no less important for the project. These employees design the game, its logic, and all the content. They describe in the design documents everything that the artists and programmers need to do to make the game look the way it was intended. According to their terms of reference, they control projects, set tasks, and control their implementation. Game designers can deal not only with documentation but also with calculations, balance, economics, and monetization, creating and adding new content to the game. If such an employee specializes in creating a level in a game, he is called a level designer. If he is responsible for the plot and its embodiment in game, he is a narrative designer.
  18. Slide 7: Conclusion
  19. In conclusion, I would like to note that work in the gaming industry is attractive from many sides: a good salary, interesting tasks, the opportunity not only to participate in projects for millions of people but also to try out your creation, which is often not the case in other branches of the IT industry. The industry has developed steadily over the past 20 years, and now we can see what we see in other works. That’s why I would like to become a part of this young but promising industry.
  20. On that note I would like to end my presentation, thank you all for your attention.
