- Personality: Jieun, known as Jessa to her Canadian friends, is independent, and a girl ahead of her time. She's book-smart, street-smart… just smart in general. Unlike most of the people in her small town, she loves to read, and believes that knowledge can lead to great things. She's a bit of a feminist, and thinks that women shouldn't be forced to just act as pretty wives to their husbands. She believes it's the inside that counts, not the outside, and sees more than the eyes can see. While most people in her town think her father is insane, she knows he's a genius, and loves him greatly. She longs for adventure outside of her town, and has goals and aspirations far beyond romance. Jessa is a bit of an outsider, and a lot of people think she's odd. But she tries not to let it get to her. Sometimes, her longing for adventure and travel leads her into danger, and she does sometimes seem a bit pessimistic due to her frustration about the town's old-fashioned, anti-feminist values.
- Background: Jung Jieun was born in Seoul on September 7, 2001. Her mother died when she was only 1 year old, leaving her inventor father, Sungmin, a widower. The two developed an unbreakable bond and shared a deep love of knowledge. When she was 11, she and her father moved to Canada, and lived there for a few years, where she learned to speak English and French, and was given the English name Jessa. When she was 14, they moved back to Korea, to a small safe town outside of Seoul. Unfortunately, this town was as close-minded as it was safe, and although she was the most beautiful girl in town, Jieun was an outcast from the day she moved there. She didn't have any close friends… okay, aside from the town bookseller. Despite her feelings of anger at the town's anti-feminist values, she continued to be herself, and continued to learn all she could. She was pursued by the most handsome man in town, but she was disgusted at his dim wit and how he looked down upon her love of reading and intelligence.

- How do they meet: Jieun's father, Sungmin, was on his way to a fair in Seoul. He took a shortcut through a forest halfway between the town and Seoul. Unfortunately, his car broke down, and he ended up seeking shelter at a very fancy house. This house belonged to Mark, the heir to a gardening company, who had been angry and resentful since the death of his mother when he was young. Although he was a very kind and well-behaved boy when he was young, after his mother died, his father (who had died a few years earlier) raised him to be as arrogant and rude as he was. Mark had been placed under a curse by an enchantress who saw how dark his heart was. He was turned into a beast, and would remain that way forever unless he could learn to love someone else, and they loved him in return. Mark locked Jieun's father in the house and said that he wasn't going to leave until further notice. After a few days with no word from him, Jieun soon realized her father was in deep trouble. She hailed a taxi to take her just outside the woods, and then ran the rest of the way to the large house. She begged with Mark to let her take her father's place, and he reluctantly agreed.
- Her thoughts on him: Initially, she thought of him as a cruel and horrible person. She refused to talk with him, and was very resentful about being stuck in the house. After a while, however, she began to think there might be some way he could change, and thought he couldn't be completely bad. When she got to know him a little better, instead of an arrogant, cruel beast, she could see a kind-hearted, respectful young man.
- His thoughts on her: Originally, Mark thought Jieun was worth nothing. He just plain didn't care about her or her well-being. However, his thoughts about her began to change after they spent some time together. He soon noticed that she was changing him as a person because of her kindness. He also noticed that her behaviour around him was changing. Eventually, he found himself falling in love with her, and realized she might be able to break his spell.
- Some moments they spent together:
- - reading together in his giant library
- - walking through a garden together
- - dancing together (base it off the famous dancing scene from Beauty and the Beast)
- - Mark and Jieun talk about how they both lost their mothers
- - Jieun tells Mark that she's an outcast in her town, and Mark wonders how the townspeople could think of her that way
