i mean there is a world of difference between using a sample from something like that in a piece of media and having a major plot point in an ARG involve a real crime. even professionally produced media can and does approach real crimes in very tasteless ways sometimes but with the barrier to entry for ARGs and online webseries being basically nil it's way way way more likely for the person handling it to not handle it well. it can be exploitative, needlessly edgy, and can be extremely upsetting for the audience to suddenly be faced with very real, very awful things that actually happened when they might be using horror as, ironically, an escape from that kind of thing
